Idea: Preserving the 1997 Special Editions of the Star Wars Original Trilogy on DVD-R
Time
It wasn't just bad marketing Bossk. Sony did with BETA what Apple has done with its computers (up until a few years ago).
They wouldn't licence the design.
Then, a competitor (I don't recall who made the first VHS decks) came around, and outsold them. Sony, rather than letting it continue, dumped BETA.
We've had at least 5 BETA decks that I can think of. 3-4 Sony, 1 Toshiba. Until we got our first VHS, we had 2 BETAs hooked into the TV at all times.

But, back on topic again, my family has:
2 copies of the OT movies on BETA (some older taped-off-TV ones, plus some backups of the Faces edition)
(Although I don't remember ever seeing it, my parents told me they used to have a bootleg of ANH, but the quality was so bad, they taped over it.)
Faces Edition on VHS, non-widescreen
Special Edition on VHS, widescreen*
TPM VHS, widescreen, special box set*
TPM DVD*
AOTC DVD*

VHS does suck.

Long Live BETA!!! My family still has a single BETA machine hooked up for watching movies from our over 100 tapes, and you'd be surprised what gems we've found:
1. Did you know the DVD and TCM versions of the movie Murder By Death aren't the complete movie??
I do, because many years ago, my parents taped a local TV station playing of the movie.
In one missing scene, Willy, Sydney Wang's son, finds a note in the dead Lionel Twain's hand. He chastises the other detectives for not seeing it there. When he finally opens it up, its a grocery list.

My dad, probably at this very moment, is at home with a Super BETA Hi-Fi he borrowed from where he works, transferring our collection of Twilight Zone episodes to DVD using our new Toshiba DVD/DVR recorder.

Many would say we have white history the rest of the 11 months...

There is an old saying about how history is written by the victorous. White man "conquered" the natives Indians of the western hemisphere, and one could say that, through slavery, blacks were "conquered as well.
White's wrote the history, so it takes a particular slant, and its been that way long after all the conquering is done.
(How often did you talk about George Washington Carver is school, whether it was February or not?)

As for all the "demonizing" talk...well, I'm not sure how to put how I feel into writing.
One thing, for sure, is that demonizing is far too strong a word for it.

The problem with other parties, is that they are too far from the mainstream to appeal to enough people to make a difference.
Example: Ralph Nader is running, again, under the Green Party flag. The Green Party?? I care about the environment, but the Green Party is insane.

As for the voting system...I recall reading what you said about how it works in Brazil. How its mandatory, and if you don't vote you need some kind of special permission or you lose the right to vote for X years in the future.
The problem with that is its not freedom. In US, people have the freedom to not vote if they wish.
(And if you're a Democrat, you usually get the right to vote a couple times, even after you're dead)

Edit: The real problem is that too many people choose not to vote. I remember, it was probably 2 years ago, they did some checking into Hollywood big-wigs that had been speaking out against the government. What was found was that most of them hadn't even voted in the 2000 election.
(They really don't have any reason to gripe...they didn't take advantage of their chance to speak with their vote.)

The Things We Hate And Love Thread .
Time
Things I Dislike (Hate is a strong word):

- When my PC starts acting weird for no apparent reason (Right now, my clock likes to jump around. I can be looking it see its fine, and 5 minutes later, its 5 hours off).

- The usual sports rivals (Bears, Vikings, Yankees, Reds, White Sox, Cleveland Cavaliers don't really have any "rivals"...maybe Denver)

- A general lack of acknowledgement from Lucasfilm to the existence of the original trilogy.

- A general lack of acknowledgement from the US national media to its bias (usually to the liberal side, but not always)

- A general lack of acknowledgement by the US media concerning the good being done in Iraq

- The general flip-flopping of John Kerry ("I voted for the $86 billion before I voted against it." and others. You notice that Kerry doesn't say much anymore.)

- If Michael Moore has a problem with the US...why doesn't he just leave?? No one is keeping him here that I am aware of. (His latest anti-American spout-off: "Why on earth would you do that to yourselves? Why would you want a society that looked like ours? What do you think is so remarkable about the way that we've structured our society, where we have a growing gap between rich and poor, where we have 40 million adult Americans who are functional illiterates because of our educational system? Why would you want to live in more fear as violence and crime increases? That to me makes absolutely no sense. It's like taking a piss on yourself. Why would you want to do that?")

- Rap (which I believe stands for Retards Attempting Poetry)

- People that think they know all about something, but don't. I used to meet these people a lot in high school. They were almost exclusively teachers on computers.

- Yahoo, but only because of its purchase/alliance with Launch.com (90% of the kids I meet here at my job are using the computers to watch music videos...what an utter waste of bandwidth. I'd probably get rid of 2/3 of them if their parents knew what they were listening to)

- My brother, but only when he gets it in his head that he is right (or that he is the center of the universe). Even proof about him being wrong usually isn't enough to get him to admit he's wrong.

- Extreme radicalism, whether its the Russians killing each other in Chechnia, Islamic terrorist groups, crazy Sarin-totting Japanese or E.L.F.

- The death of common sense.

- The removal of public punishment from US society. If you witnessed a public execution, would it deter you from murder?? It would me. I think punishment doesn't mean as much as it use to to people. People don't see it, so they think it doesn't happen or they just don't understand the consequences.

Music!
Time
I dn't have any particular genre of music that I listen to. If I like a song, I try to find it so I can listen to it in the future.

For example, currently in my Sony 5-disc changer I have:
- Mannheim Steamroller Halloween Collection Disk 1
- The Best of Queen (my dad's been dubbing records onto CD, and he made me an extra)
- A custom-burned CD of classical music (I think I have Beethoven's 5th on it, I'd have to check)

On my computer, I have everything from Santana's Smooth to MC Hawking to "Hell March" from Command and Conquer: Red Alert.

Some other random songs I have...
- London Symphony playing the Super Mario Bros. theme
- KISS "I'm Gonna Rock and Roll All Night"
- Todd Rundgren "Bang the Drum"
- Johhny Cash "One Piece at a Time"
- Creedance Clearwater "Down on the Corner"

I don't believe you are getting the point I'm trying to put across.

He, Michael Moore, reportedly knew about atrocities (not the Aub Grab tortures) in Iraq in December. Why did he not speak up then.
I don't care about when he "decided to mention" them. He knew, and he did not step forward with the information. In my eyes, that makes him as guilty as the military higher-ups that allowed it to happen.

As for Donald Rumsfeld...it was not months, it was 2 weeks. From what I remember, the Defense Dept. approached CBS and 60 Minutes and asked them to hold off on the story for 2 weeks, so the incidents could be investigated.
To me, that says, "We don't know, but we want to get to the bottom of it so we can make accurate statements about the situation."

Imagine that.

Someone that wants to to check the facts so that they can accurately provide information to the public.

If only the network media and New York Times was more diligent in their reporting...

Actually, it was a last minute adition to the film. I remember reading about it on his website back then.
That doesn't exactly explain why he didn't release the footage to the media and blow the lid off the atrocities. If Moore hates this war so much, why wouldn't he reveal this info as soon as he got it??

Respect?? I don't believe Moore respects anything.
The situation with Nick Berg is, indeed, very suspicious (although I sense that your thoughts concerning it are different from mine). I think that anything that anyone can do to shed light on it is a good thing, and would help to honor his memory and let the US get the story straight.

He could have broken the story, back in December, of the military abuses, but he didn't.
If he wanted to expose the truth, why not release the 20 minute interview he had with Nicholas Berg?

He also supposedly tricked the military into getting his film crew embedded. They didn't say who they was working with.
He also, supposedly again, instructed his film crew to get shots of military personnel as they "f---ed up".
Assuming this is true, I all I see is a fat man with, as Bossk put it, a personal agenda.

BTW: Hezbollah terror network gives the movie a Thumbs Up

For jimbo to say they removed God from the Pledge was jumping the gun. They only tried to remove it.

ricarleite: It was indeed an "Atheist Lunatic" that decided to sue over it, but it was the left-coast 9th Circus (Circuit) Court of Appeals that overturned an earlier decision against him.
It was announced today (or was it yesterday) that the Supreme Court is dropping the case, which also overturns the earlier appeal.

It seems that Mr. Atheist, since he does not have legal custody of the child "he was trying to protect," he cannot legally represent her. Its all in the link below:

MORE CHANGES!!! (for the 2004 OT DVD release)
Time
Bossk,

Good news. I was able to find it...sort of.

There is this cool site I found, archive.org. Every so often it sends a spider out to collect websites, and it archives them. You can view what www.microsoft.com looked like in 1998.

Anyways, it took some guessing (for the URL), but I found the site I mentioned.

Archived www.galstar.com/~mrmiller

Bossk,

If your talking about pre-1985 figures, I might have a guide for you.
...
I cannot find it anymore. Perhaps I have it on my hard drive. It was a picture of all the weapons, and each was labeled. I wish I could remember that URL...www.galstar.com/mmiller or something like that.

Hotrod,
For me, the X-mas of 1986 was probably the biggest SW I had.
My parents bought all my stuff at KayBee Toys. 3 for $.99 I think was the price on the figures. Anyways, X-mas of 86, I got:
Millennium Falcon
Lambda Shuttle
Ewok Village Playset
...
(had X-Wing, Y-Wing, Vader's TIE)
I cannot remember anything else now. That was also the year I lost the belief in Santa Claus. I had been playing in the basement and found all the boxes.

MORE CHANGES!!! (for the 2004 OT DVD release)
Time
My collection is far from complete, and also far from being in good condition, but I've got a couple gems.

- POTF Edition Jabba's Dungeon. The Dungeon was a Sears exclusive. Came with Amanaman, Barada and EV-9D9.
- Ewok Battle Wagon- It was in the cartoon, but the toy itself is not designed like the rest of the cartoon toys. It looks like its from the movie.

For the most part, everything in my collection has something wrong with it:
- On my X-Wing, R2 has a bolt in his head. Something inside broke, and my dad was able to glue it, then reenforce it with a big screw. I've also had 1 wing snap off a couple times, but its been glued too.
- On my Lambda shuttle, one wing no longer wants to stay in place. The internal gear that holds it up must be stripped.
- The wing on my Vader's TIE is hot-glued in place.
- The Falcon is missing the remote (on a string).
- All that remains of my Ewok Glider is the wings.
- A good portion of my figures are missing weapons/staffs/snakes, etc.

My favorite toy, though, is my Han Solo blaster. I still pull it out every once in a while to twirl it around my finger.

jimbo,

In one way, I believe you are right.
Special Effects.

I'm sure Lucas didn't want to have to use the vasoline trick with the landspeeder, but he had to.
He wanted to have the dogfights look more intricate, but the technology wasn't there for him to do it.

But, some changes are not necessary.
The ROTJ ending.
The scream.
The shot.
The lead-in to Mos Eisley. (Dump the extra lead-in stuff, like the Ronto, but keep the changes to already existing scenes.)

Have you guys discussed this movie yet? Bubba Ho-tep
Time
Oh, My, Goodess.

This movie is absolutely hilarious. As I said, I don't know if it has been discussed yet.
If it has...oh well.
If it hasn't, so much the better.

On blind faith, my parents bought the DVD of this movie. My mom had read reviews of the movie when it first showed up at festivals, and she just had to see it. It didn't come to our area (either in threaters or film festivals), and at that point, she just had to hope that some movie studio would pick it up for DVD distribution.
Well, a couple weeks ago, MGM made her very happy when it was released. We watched it last night.

If you haven't heard of it, here's the basic premise.

Elvis (Bruce Campbell) didn't die. He traded places with an impersonator, and is still living in a retirement home in Texas after a broken hip. At the same home is JFK...a black JFK (Ossie Davis).
Over a several night span, their home is visited by a soulsucking mummy in a ten-gallon hat and leather boots. He is draining the souls of the old people to sustain himself, except that Elvis and JFK figure him out and try to take him down.

It really is a very funny movie. Black JFK explaining why he's black. Elvis trying to use his karate moves on the mummy while also keeping hold of his walker for balance.

The Day After Tomorrow

Whether or not Bush said that, I don't know...
but that isn't a joke.

The massive California fires last summer were mostly caused by environmentalists, in a round-about-way.

The government wanted to go in and remove "old-growth" trees. That being dead trees that haven't fallen yet. Environmentalists fought against the action, stating that the government would be killing squirrels and bird and such that nested in the trees.

Now, dry and dead trees burn a lot easier than growing, live trees. If the dead trees had been removed, they fire would not have spread so quickly.

The walk would not be a problem. A week of any military or marching band training would get them walking just fine.
(Let me attest to the marching band thing. I've been out of high school for almost 6 years now, and I still will walk in step with people I see in front of me. Its actually kind of scary how trained I became.)
