So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...
Time
starwars.com has released a slideshow comparing the original 1977 film to the 1997 and 2004 edits. While I highly doubt it, it is possible that the place they GOT their 1977 is the new DVDs.

So that might be a place to look to compare the old and new...generally speaking, the colors just look washed out on the 1977. I saw a few places were the detail wasn't as fine.

I believe it was actually a T-Mobile Sidekick, but that's not really important.

The unfortunate thing is that there are enough people that DO care (for whatever reason), the few people that don't won't make any difference.

Could Lucas screw movies up anymore (Indy 4)
Time
The Maltese Falcon is a detective novel from 1930. It was made several times into a movie, with the most famous version being from 1941 with Humphrey Bogart, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre.

In the story, the Maltese Falcon is a priceless gold statue encrusted with jewels (a gift from the Island of Malta to the King of Spain), which was lost at sea and later rediscovered, only to be covered in a black paint which made it look more like a common statue.

In the movie, the Falcon is never actually shown on camera until the last few minutes, although it is seen wrapped in newspapers for a portion of the film. However, the way it affects people, bringing out their greed to the point of murder, is what moves the story.

Maybe it's too 'connected' to Spielberg and Lucas themselves, or to the public consciousness, or something else like that. He also mentions removing 'the offending parts' of it, which is interesting. People tend to get offended over religion the most, so maybe that's the biggest clue that it's another religious artifact or something to do with religion.

By the way, one of the most famous McGuffins was the actual Maltese Falcon. When it came down to it, the object itself wasn't the real point of the film, but it did serve as the thing that moved the story along. And that's the genius of it.

Its not religious, but it would be interesting if that (the Maltese Falcon) WAS what Indy was after in this next movie. Where Boogie, the fat man and Lorre failed, Indy will succeed...or will he?

Lucas: Indy IV Starts In 2007

George Lucas told Empire magazine that he, director Steven Spielberg and star Harrison Ford are aiming to shoot a proposed fourth Indiana Jones movie by mid-2007, with an eye to a 2008 release. But, he added, getting everyone back together may not be easy.

"Before, I was just working with Steven and Harrison," Lucas told the magazine. "Now everybody's a superstar, so it's a little bit more difficult than it was then."

As for the story? "We're basically going to do The Phantom Menace," Lucas said cryptically, referring to Star Wars: Episode I. "People's expectations are way higher than you can deliver. You could just get killed for the whole thing. ... We would do it for fun and just take the hit with the critics and the fans. ... But nobody wants to get into it unless they are really happy with it."

Lucas added: "The 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation has freed up an idea for a plot that was originally deemed too incendiary. I discovered a McGuffin. ... I told the guys about it, and they were a little dubious about it, but it's the best one we've ever found. ... Unfortunately, it was a little too 'connected' for the others. They were afraid of what the critics would think. They said, 'Can't we do it with a different McGuffin? Can't we do this?' and I said no. So we pottered around with that for a couple of years. And then Harrison really wanted to do it, and Steve said 'OK.' I said, 'We'll have to go back to that original McGuffin and take out the offending parts of it, and we'll still use that area of the supernatural to deal with it.'"

Excuse me??
We're basically going to do TPM??
So, does that mean Indy is going to have an annoying CGI sidekick that people will be created 'Death to ______' websites about??

Transformer Bots Revealed

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of the upcoming Transformers movie, revealed the list of robot characters that will appear in the big-budget adaptation of the 1980s comic, toy and animated franchise, topped by the Autobot leader Optimus Prime and the Decepticon leader Megatron, in a live video Q&A on Yahoo! on Aug. 18.

On the Autobot side the movie will feature Bumblebee, Jazz, Ratchet and Ironhide. On the Decepticon side, the film will include Starscream, Brawl, Bonecrusher, Barricade, Scorponok, Frenzy and Blackout.

The writers also asked fans to submit a key line of dialogue for Optimus Prime on the official Web site, which will be included in the film, apparently taking a page from the publicity campaign for Snakes on a Plane, which also incorporated a fan-suggested bit of dialogue.

The writers said that the movie will rely heavily on characters from the generation one chapter of the long-lived franchise, centering on the war between the benevolent Autobots and the nefarious Decepticons—a war that plays out on Earth in 2006. Michael Bay is directing Transformers, which is currently in production with an eye to a July 4, 2007, release.

Agreed.

I want Ballblaster!!

I would spend hours playing it on our Atari 800. If I had more time, I'd probably play it even now.
Did they rename it for some reason? It was always Ballblazer when I had the C-64 and Atari 7800 versions. Pity the 90's Playstation version bore little resemblance to it's namesake. Would be fun to play Rescue on Fractalus again too.
It looks like the same game, so I have no clue why they renamed it.
One thing I liked about it was that how many points you scored depended on your distance to the goal AND the size of the moving goal.

In games D-pad or Analog what do you like better?
Time
Have to agree it depends on the game.

2D games tend to work better (for me at least) with a D-pad...original Legend of Zelda, Street Fighter (like Chaltab said). Newer games are work with the analog stick.

However, when it comes right down to it, I think I really prefer WASD with a mouse, especially for FPS games. I've gotten better using dual-analog on a Xbox, but I'd be a lot more comfortable with a keyboard and the precision of a mouse to aim. I'm trying to talk a friend into re-starting Knights of the Old Republic. She tried it on XBox, made it only a couple hours, and didn't like it. I've told her a few times that playing on a PC is much easier (not to mention better looking because XBox only puts out 640x480).

About yourself
Time
Oh, why not:
I'm a 26 year old single male living in Northeast Ohio.
I work in a library as a general computer expert. We have a 8 computer lab which I maintain and monitor (its a small branch).
I graduated from college in December 2002 with a BBA-IS.
I have been a fan of Star Wars for as long as I can remember. Return of the Jedi was always my favorite of the first 3 because of all the combat.
I consider myself to be a fairly balanced person...jack of all trades, master of none.

A Scanner Darkly - First 24 minutes

I'm with greencapt. Its interesting effect, but even a 30-second commercial is too much of it to watch at a time. I think the effect would be good if used for emphasis in the scenes of a movie, but not for the entire thing.

Part of why I don't like it that much is not the fluidity (even if something is at rest, you see motion). Its the fact that it looks like an image that has been taken from 24-bit to 8-bit or 4-bit using a 'nearest color' method rather than 'dither' method.

The Non-Biased PS3 Thread
Time
Not wishing to change the subject of the whole thread, but I must disagree with you both Gaffer and Chaltab. I love playing games on my PC. There is significantly more stuff you can do with it.
Compare playing Warcraft 2 on a PC to playing it on a Playstation (yes, it was released on PS1).
Or, if you'd rather: From a personal standpoint, I can tell you I find Star Wars: Battlefront for PC far more fun than its XBox equivilent. The pinpoint sniper accuracy I can achieve with a mouse trumps an analog stick any day of the week.

Computers are more versatile and 90% of the time backwards compatible (WinXP killed about 5-7% of that because of how it messes with most DOS games). Up until recently, net play was limited to PC, and for the most part, it still is.

Now, are there games I'd rather play on a console? Sure. Fighting and some first-person shooters just work better.
