Help: looking for... Waterworld DTS 4.0 original mix (anyone have the DTS CD-Rom?)
Time

@little-endian: as Jetrell has written before, we have all a life, even if I must admit I'd be more than happy to work in the video production field... but I digress...

Well, Waterworld is in the usual place (I call it the "project drawer", because I put there all my unfinished works, waiting to have time to work on them, and I have to take a "peek" inside, to remember what is actually in there...); it means it will be made, sooner or later; I must add that probably will be sooner than what I thought at the beginning - weeks, not months or years - so I ask to be patient.

To answer your question from here and Waterworld [spoRv] thread, and also following Jetrell's answer, you could always get the Cinema DTS but it has some flaws: no .1 channel, slightly out of sync (at least for the HD-DVD, but BD should be the same), inverted phase... I solved these issues, so again, you have to "only" to wait... (^^,)

Disney's Beauty and the Beast [spoRv] <em>BD-25</em> (Released)
Time

@nirbateman: THANKS AGAIN! You solved all my subtitles problems!!!

@titanic: there will be both the BD and Laserdisc audio tracks, so you can listen to both and choose which you like most!

I've finished to make the video intro right now; going to make the video menu, then I'll make the BD-25, burn it, watch it carefully and finally release it; hope to finish all this night - or, probably, tomorrow morning... stay tuned, the end of the tunnel is near! (^^,)

Help: looking for... Léon - The Professional: a theatrical HD master <em>without</em> contrast boost
Time

I still prefer to have the proper color grading, contrast level and much more image on all the four sides of the HDTV Vs. better overall details of the BD... then, a grain plate applied to the former should give back some of the lost details - or, better, fools the brain (through the eye) to *think* it has better resolution than before...

The Matrix [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED*
Time

LAST UPDATE:

After A LOT of technical problems (that I spare you to know, it's so boring...), I finally finished to encode the movie using my ColourMatch2new script; it worked pretty well, as wrote previously; in the few frames with artifacts (still to check the whole movie, though) I managed to make some further corrections, but...

The problem is, x264 crashes after few hundred frames, maybe due to the high memory and CPU requests asked by the complicated AviSynth script, and the low power of my system... nevertheless, shots with artifacts should be few and shorts, so I thought to use this last tweak sparingly, and here you are the result on the most offending frame:

Not perfectly regraded as the DVD, but still better than the original BD, color wise, and so all the movie will be sourced from the BD, avoiding the use of HDTV or upscaled DVD shots; I also decided to use the old ColourMatch script for very few shots, like the "green bearded Neo", where the new script clearly can't beat the old one.

So, I'm near to the V2.0 - until I will receive the laserdisc rip of the movie; then, I should redo everything from scratch! (^^,)

Disney's Beauty and the Beast [spoRv] <em>BD-25</em> (Released)
Time

First, sorry for the late reply; the video is ready, what I have to do is to put in sync all the audio and sub tracks (IIRC I have them all, but I must check better) and make the final BD-25; I also need to finish the covers, and the BD menu; I must work this week-end, so I think next week this project will finally see the light of the day... happy to know more than one person is still interested in this!

Help Wanted: Alien Resurrection HD - anyone capping these on HDNet this July...
Time

Very interesting link, Jetrell! I'm going to read the Bleach Bypass technique now - used on Minority Report... thanks!

And I'm waiting to watch some screenshot comparison of laserdisc and BD (or DVD), as the latter two have almost the same color grading (differences should be due rec.601/709):

Standalone CD recorder for Laserdisc audio capture?
Time

Frankly I don't think there will be much audible difference between bit-perfect 44.1KHz capture, converted to 48KHz to be BD/DVD compliant, Vs. analog capture (with a very good ADC) directly at 48KHz...

I think also that the analog tracks have very good quality - if japanese chose to put the japanese audio in the analog tracks instead of the PCM ones, *maybe* there were good reasons to do that!

I read somewhere, years ago, that the analog tracks could sound more "natural" than PCM ones, but this is "fuel" for a completely different thread...

Standalone CD recorder for Laserdisc audio capture?
Time

I only have a laptop these days, and haven't seen an external sound card in stores recently.

So it falls into the first "exception" category! That's a very good option, indeed, and TEAC is a solid Hi-Fi brand; I remember their gorgeous audio cassette recorders... but I digress!

About recording of analog tracks; I agree, the DVD-Recorder (IF it has the PCM option, of course) capture at 48KHz, so you have not to re-encode the track for DVD/BD compatibility reasons, as you will be forced to do with the CD-Recorder, that could record only at 44.1KHz.

Standalone CD recorder for Laserdisc audio capture?
Time

Even if I have a CD-Recorder, I have never used to capture LD audio tracks, as I don't see the point to use it for this... indeed, you have to record the CD and then rip it into your PC; even if it will take few minutes more than direct capture, it's still longer... multiply those few minutes for a large collection, and the total waste of time will be hours, if not days!

There are, of course, few exceptions:

  • you have NOT a digital input on your sound card
  • you want to capture the analog tracks and the CD-Recorder ADC is better than your sound card's one
  • you want to capture both analog and PCM tracks at the same time (to prolong the life of a precious laserdisc player and/or cut the capture time in half)

If you have some minutes, take a look at this post.

Help with Up-scaling?
Time

The problem is, there is no perfect upscaling technique, as it implies to create something that is not there!

Said so, there are some methods better than others, but to obtain good results you have to study them... if you have a lot of patience and time to dedicate to video editing, my advice is AviSynth; if you have less time and patience, try VirtualDub (and VirtualDubMod too)

They are both free, and have many filters; between them there are many upscaling ones; my preferred software is still Avisynth, though; in particular, there are many more upscaling filters to choose!
