Guys, what’s about Dooku PS2 insertion? Should it be used?

The only provlem I have with this test clip is the PAL speedup. Really hope this will be corrected in the final version.

If it’s the only problem, I’ve fixed it:

Investigating the possibility of using DVD menus as shot replacement; right now I’m working on Darth Vader and Luke duel on Cloud City; it should be ready later today.

If possible, I would prefer an edit with alternate shots/takes when available.

Me too… discovering so many alternate takes (thanks also to you), it could be a great oppurtunity to have another version - we are not tired enough to see theatrical, 1997, 2004 or 2011 versions, aren’t we? 😉

I truthfully may have done that a few times.

My fault; it has truncated audio, but present in the final movie, hence not important.

Once there is the script, in where there is a call for each scene, I think it could be always possible to do two (or three versions), as I suggested some posts before; one with the best quality clips, and another with (almost all) the others discarded for the former reinserted, including the b&w.

Forgot to mention: if there are alternative take/different angle, with finished effect, that could not affect the overall quality of the final result, would you prefer that it is used instead the shot seen in the movie?

Bewy, thanks for the link; it is really informative.

Menus: I knew they were not deleted scenes, BUT… they always could be used to replace some bad shot in the deleted scene - Wampa comes to mind.
Sadly, the best ones have the written all on them, BUT… I managed to fix it, and result, albeit imperfect, is nice; I used the duel menu to make a simple intro, that I’d like to attach before any film, along with the BD logo carved in the stone with a lightsaber.

I think DVD menus are the same all over the world - there are three (or four?) each, and they appear at random AFAIK - but I’m pretty sure there is a way in hardware player to choose (or change) them.

Foreign language: this is a thing I’m thinking about since the beginning… it will be hard just with the english track, so I thought to use only that. I’d like to add subtitles for the whole movie + deleted scenes in other languages, but it will be really hard… 😦

I converted my X9 to PAL after a lot of dicking around, it was noticeably better than the 2950, but replacing the power supply components with better ones in the 2950 improved its picture quite a bit.

You really did it? You are my hero poita! 😄
With such a “monster”, I guess how good could be a PAL laserdisc in comparison to mid-level models like 2950 and 925…

And, do you think that a “simple” Panasonic LX-HD20 (which is a Sony HIL-C2EX, very good player that could be put in fourth place after HLX-0, HLX-9 and HIL-C1) could be modified as well?

Yeah you have to go to the language options on the 2004 DVD menu on the Dagobah themed menu to see the extended lift up of R2-D2 poking his head in the window. It’s totally re-framed but I think it works better in that framing too.

Nice, as well as Darth Vader and Luke duel; but they are on ESB DVD - that’s why I haven’t found them before! 😄 I guess it it’s possible to use them somewhere, along with other DVD menus - a new idea, I like it!

Also, I guess if there are some live action sequence from official videogames that could be used as well - with same characters of the saga, of course.

Thanks for the links; now I’m watching other clips, and I think many are from the same sources. I’ll take a look at these tomorrow.

How would any of these be included?

BB-8 piloting an X-wing Jeep commercial (00:15) ****

You could take a look at the commercials on youtube; frankly I saw TFA once when it came out, so I can’t be sure if/where to put these, but the quality is very good, and * maybe * could fit in the story… that’s why I put them in the evaluation list; but I think it could be OK to use them, it’s a fan edit, after all!

UPDATE

I finally found the Episode 3 ‘extended Count Dooku duel’ from the videogame… it’s just 3s shot, but, as it’s Christopher Lee, and it fits quite well, I decided to put it in; original quality is low, so final result isn’t perfect - it’s in color, at least - but we are talking about a 2005 PS2 game, and the cinematic sequence is also windowboxed… you find the test clip here, as well as in the first post!

Well I am not a Star Wars Super Expert but you need to look at a few documentaries also.

I know… but there are so many around!

You need to look at the original Making of Star Wars (1977) there are a few shots in that.
You will find a better alternate take of Han Running up the Ramp on to the Falcon from a different angle.

I think I have it from Rinzler ebook IIRC

You also get shot’s of Landspeeders driving through Mos Eisley.

Got them, but they are quite rough.

Tie Fighters being blown apart on blue screen. Deleted Y-wing fly over.

Those are missing!

Deleted Magic I can’t seem to find a good quality version of it now days has cool stuff in it too. It has the Landspeeder display when R2-D2 is located, so I don’t know where that came from either originally as it’s a compilation from various sources.

Landspeeder display, uh? Interesting… 😄

The Best Deleted Footage for Empire is in some of the trailers although the best one for cut footage is not in cinemascope. You won’t be able to use the take of Vader force lifting and choking Luke off the Gantry Crane and throwing him down the shaft either. As it was obviously changed 😃

Got to find them anyway! May you tell me something more?

There is an extended snippet of R2-D2 lifting himself up to the window of Yoda’s hut from the 2004 DVD menu of Empire

I just watched all the VOB menu file of my PAL DVD, but it isn’t there… maybe it’s only on NTSC DVD?

Empire Strikes Back SFX documentary has some alternate audio.

May you explain this?

don’t use the shot of Vader communicating with Luke in Return of the Jedi lightsaber construction scene. Vader in his meditation chamber was from Empire Strikes Back.

I know, but it’s soo cool… anyway, don’t you think one powerful as Darth Vader may have more than one meditation chamber? 😄

That about covers All that I can think of at the momment.

That’s food for thought! Thanks!!!

Were in relation with my previous sentence “I found scenes that I’ve never seen before”; and I can add now “on ‘usual’ places like DVD, BD and Rinzler ebooks deleted scene”.
I’m quite sure it is possible to find out other snippets inside documentaries, behind the scenes etc. - but, as I haven’t seen the movies dozen times, if I see a shot, I must check it anytime if it’s in the movie, or modified, or not at all, but I have to search the whole movie each time… that’s why a Star Wars super expert is welcome!

@Ronster:
thanks for the informations! I’m aware there are many scenes/shots not even filmed, or lost, or (probably) hold in some secret place, ready for 40th (or 50th) anniversary… who knows?

We could only use only material effectively available; even using every single scene and shot, any film will be not longer than 20m each but, as you also suggested, not every scene will be used; I’m trying to compile a detailed list of what will not be include, because it’s irrelevant, or technically inferior, what it could be included, with a little of work, and what could be put back in the film “as is” - like almost all Episode 1, 2, 3 DVD deleted scenes.

Another thing I find amusing is to find out every day some little snippet of a shot here and there; but I think almost everything usable is listed in the first page - and, of course, in the * database *.

Just to tease the fans of extended editions - as, of course, I am - I found scenes that I’ve never seen before, but I must admit I’m not a die hard fan like many here are; that’s way a little help is always welcome!

Between the others, latest finds that I think are interesting:

  • Luke and Leia kiss on Bespin
  • Few shots inside the Death Star corridors
  • Luke answer at Ben’s hut

plus a lot of Episode 7 shots found on trailer and * supposedly * not found in the movie - work in progress!

UPDATES

  • Finished to rate any scene/shot I have available
  • Found new footage from unknown sources

I want to thank again benduwan and pittrek; their help is fundamental for this project!

Still looking for an audio editor who would like to help; also, a graphic editor will be useful as well!

Ryan McAvoy did a rough and incomplete edit I loved called The Lost Workprint. It moved since scenes around a little liberally but it was a fantastic watch. It could be a good guide. I also made modifications to it to extend it further I think you should consider. I could send my copy of this extension.

Any help is really welcome, so yes, your version will be appreciated!
About scene replacement: I would like to put them in the exact order, if possible. But I’m too lazy to read the whole scripts…

Colorize: I made further testings, both using MWilson script, and trying to color match a B&W clip with a reference clip or image… results are poor… the only positive thing I found is that the B&W scenes are few, some are useless or are the same of the movie, or have a corresponding color scene; what remain are some snippets here and there, for a grandtotal time of around a minute or so… hoping MWilson will find a way to colorize them by hand, with better results!

Now I’ve finished to review EP 4 Rinzler ebook scenes, first topic (and the deleted scene database as well) updated; tomorrow I’ll try to take a look at the remaining scenes.

I think I have all the most important deleted scenes of all the movies; maybe some little snippet remain to be found in some trailer - it will be great to find other few interesting seconds here and there - but, apart those, it’s almost time to start to work seriously on EP 1!

@Swift S. Lawliet:
I have now EP 4, 5, 6, 7 of the russian extended versions; quality if low, are only in Russian, extended scenes are untouched and not all present, some could be uncorrectly placed (for example the Wampa attack on EP5); nevertheless, they could be used as rough guidelines to scene placement; for EP 1, 2, 3, I rely on ADigitalMan extended version, even if, at the time, the BD scenes were not available; benduwan made an ultimate cut of EP 4, and it will be my main guideline; pittrek send me long excerpts of EP 4, 5, 6 with deleted scenes reincorporated, and I’ll follow these, too. At the end, I’ll ask your help to place further scenes.

@nightstalkerpoet:
Yes, it is possible; to achieve perfect results, the reference scene must have the same frame size (NOT resolution); I mean, if the reference has not cropped size, it could be upscaled to HD and used for input; if the scene is similar, but not the same, or has different size, results will vary. Further tests are needed. Any help with locating same/similar shot to use as reference is really appreciated!

@MWilson:
An avisynth script like colourlike, or there are other softwares that could do that. Today I reviewed the EP 6 deleted scenes included in the Rinzler ebooks, and luckily the b&w ones could be not used, as they are uninteresting or alternate takes, BUT the Rancor scene has shots not seen before, that will be great to reinsert! Your chromajig works well, but I think it’s impossible to reach good result with automatic colorize tools… I think that doing manual settings is the only way to go, possibly following a reference image/clip.

AFAIK, ADigitalMan released the three prequel episodes; I’ll use them as main guidelines to know where to insert deleted scenes; the others in the mysterious russian site could always serve for the same purpose.

UPDATE

  • Found a new Rogue One korean trailer; I think it’s * possible * to use one of its brief shot, to replace a similar, unfinished shot of the EP6 deleted scene found on BD, “Jerjerrod’s Conflict”, the final one with the empty screen.
  • Found further EP7 shots on trailers, teasers, TV spots, not found in the final movie, or different takes etc. - don’t know how much footage will be proved effectively cut/different, in total, but an educated guess could be around one minute, if not more, taken in account there are around two dozens of them, and each shot is few seconds long.
  • Thinking to use “non canon” footage found on some TV spots - quality is very good, and scenes are plausible… got just to find out where to place them! With just three spots, total time is around one minute and half!

An audio editor is still needed!

UPDATE

Added a lot of shots taken from trailers and teasers; all are very brief, ranging from 0.5 to 6 seconds (usually around 1.5/2s); that’s why it’s difficult to find them; also, many are only different takes, mirrored, reversed etc. - not too much to add, it’s true, but “every shot counts”, in particular when the quality is very high, like the ones found onto HD trailers!

Info: The Ultimate Super Resolution Technique
Time

The most promising upscaling technique is the neuron network - the one in that google link, but there are also others; result are astonishing, even if the final result is not really an upscale, but more a reconstruction; but, who cares, if the result is great? Let’s wait for someone who would bring these kind of techniques in AviSynth - it will happen, sooner or later…

Meanwhile, we should rely on the old techniques; I think mixing different ones could lead to a better result than using a single one. I developed one on my own, simple, but effective - the PaNup: https://forum.fanres.com/thread-25.html - I used in many projects, and it works quite well; can’t say how much can improve the quality in comparison of a single upscale, but there is an improvement; I encourage everyone to take a look and try it - it’s easy, and doesn’t require a specific tool like AviSynth…

Info: Combine 1080p and film to get 1080p resolution, film colors and a bit larger frame!
Time

First, don’t know if it was done before; if so, just disregard this post! (^^,)

During my latest research of Star Wars saga deleted scenes, needed for one of my projects, it comes to my attention a little clip that I remember was in the final movie. I said myself “I’m pretty sure it is in the movie ‘as is’, but maybe it’s a different take… let’s compare them!”. After the comparison, I discover that, apart different frame size, colors and rough audio, the scene is the same found on any media.

Then I thought if it’s possible to gain some lines of resolution, combining both 1080p and film frames; I explain the theory here: https://forum.fanres.com/thread-20.html - but never tested before with clips longer than few seconds AND with so different color palettes… so, it was time to put the theory in practice!

The 1080p (I used HDTV, but BD will be the same, more or less) frame is left untouched; the SD clip is then upscaled to be spatially aligned with the 1080p; as the frame sizes have different aspect ratio, now we have two overlaid rectangular frames - the 1080p wider, the film taller - where the center share the same image, left and right sides are 1080p and top and bottom are film. Got the point? The problem is to mix them all, to obtain a proper final result… I used my colourmatch to regrade the 1080p using film as reference; while good, it’s still not perfect, so I ended up using the 1080p regraded on the sides, 1080p luma and film chroma for the shared image, and film for top and bottom:

https://s12.postimg.org/bpfu0rrj1/combined.png

Now we have an axis-aligned polygon aspect ratio clip! Simply put, a “cross”, where the corners are empty… so, I used a script to “fill” somehow those corners, to have a full rectangular image.

At the end, now the result has 1920x840 active pixels, with the 1080p resolution and film colors: plus 24 gained lines top and bottom, about 3% of 1080p resolution more… it is still not perfect; the corners, in particular, but also the top and bottom film, and 1080p left and right, “slices” that sometimes have not the identical color of the rest of the image.
