Doctor Who
Time

Who is the actress in these pictures?  Haven't been following the show for a while.

The newer doctor whos are some of the best new science fiction that has been on television.  Amazingly well written and casted, well most of the time anyway.

Too bad they could not have given the same love and attention to detail to star trek on tv.

They half assed enterprise all the way up to the final episode.

Restoring or reshooting these missing episodes and sequences of doctor who reminds me of the lost spider pit sequence in king kong being recreated on the dvd.  Also reminds me of serial squadrons reshoots of a lost movie serial, lol.

How would you have done ROTJ?
Time

What if Harrison Declined to do the third film?

They could have had him die in the carbonite.

Harrison gets his wish that the character is dead.  But fans everywhere would have been devasted which Lucas knew. He knows kids don't want to see the hero die.

Also in the movie serials he was emulating the hero could die one week at the end of a cliffhanger and come back the next week without a scratch.

What if it was Han who flew the falcon into the second death star and died trying to escape the fireball that lando somehow survives going yeehaw!.

You see Lucas could not win.  If he killed Lando he would be racist.  If he killed Han Solo the parents of children would write to him angry just like if he had luke or leia killed.  The kids would no longer buy the action figures or the comics or novels and tie in merchandise.

Blu Ray movies NOT worth buying
Time

I though the problems with some blu ray releases were 2 things.

1. Dumping Old HD transfers to blu ray disc instead of using the state of the art current technology and doing new transfers

2.  Digital Noise Reduction or DVNR.

These can be either deal breakers or not.  What if the blu rays are better than the dvd's but still not up to blu ray par like the star trek 1-6 set.  Where Trek II still has dnr to it only on a much more restrained basis so it is the only transfer that is really blu ray qualty.

Still worth it for the steal of a price amazon in the usa is offering it for though.

Either you buy , or wait for the so called double dip release that is fixed that may never come.

I don't have a blu ray player and an HDTV but if i did and bought the trek set i would feel like i was saying to paramount.

"Hey here's my money i know you did a shitty job but you can have my money anyway. Does not matter that this set was planned for more than 3 years, or that you guys threw 200 million dollars at jj for that new movie. "

What would a  restoration frame by frame from the oneg cost them, millions?

The fact that they rushed them out just to meet the deadline of the new movies release does not sit well with me.  I know its a business decision, i still think it was a lame thing to do.

What i Lol'ed at was that people think these are better now that they have had harsh digital scrubbing done to them.  Movies should not have grain.  Grain is dirt on the image and a defect, type of people.

Yeah i read your player has  an AC3 RF out.  I think you need a demodulator though?

DAMN,sounds like it will be to much trouble, has anyone here already captured this audio from all 3 movies?

I can't remember the exact details but i believe someone supplied adywan with the 5.1 for a new hope, wonder if he still has it?

As for direct lossless captures in digital for empire and jedi i don't know if they have ever been done.

Also i think adywan used/included the 97 mix on his HD release of star wars special edition, but he took out greedo shooting.

I thought those were upmixes, as opposed to the true 5.1 on the LD?

Does anyone have the DD 5.1 from the LD?

I have the 97 SE boxset(LOL obviously I am capping it again)but I can't rip the 5.1 or at least I do not think I can.

So the LD Special Edition Boxset is DD 5.1,I have looked all over my set and can't find that anywhere,I have optical out on my LD player and my sound card has optical in I am pretty sure,I have to look into this.

The 5.1 on the laserdisc is obviously stored in the ac3 format and needs to be decoded.  You need what a player with ac3 rf out?

The digital audio is the pcm and is stereo only.

I believe the ac3 to be the theatrical 1997 dolby digital 5.1 mix without any sort of confirmation.  Obviously the other audio flavors from 1997 are missing except for these 2.

Missing is the 6 track dts.

SDDS was also used but is used in theaters only.

They can always re-scan the source at 4k or 6k. :) With an HD camera, you're stuck with HD because that's what you shot the movie at.

You could rescan the source, but you would have to redo all of the effects if the digital intermediate was 1080p.

I though the effects were usually upscaled from 2k to 4k, or was that just the case on spider man 2?

How do they deal with films with cgi on blu ray in the first place.  They must have to upscale the effects or they remain at 2k.  The film footage would then look way better than the effects.  What the hell is the purpose of doing cgi if it is not future proof like effects created on film?

Digital should be used in its proper context as a tool to augment film and do shots that you could do no other way, it should not be used to replace film.  It will always remain second best.  Cheaper to produce and cheaper turnaround and everyone these days can shoot video, not just anyone can handle film right though.

It is like those self publishing book deals these days.  Anyone can write a book or screenplay.  Anyone can shoot HD Video.  Even kids and soccer moms have access to the technology, if not on the same high level of quality.  Still it makes it less of an art form and opens movies up to anyone.  And you no longer need film school cause you can just shoot right from anywhere.  Do they even use film anymore in film school why not call it what it is "digital video movie making without any frackin film"

There were actually respected cinematographers who worked on the original star wars and indiana jones trilogies.  They were true artists and craftsmen.

Yes indy IV was shot on film but the cinema style does not match Douglas Slocombe's like they promised it would and there  is way too much cgi where practical stuntwork and models, and matte paintings would have done fine.

David Tatterstall has done tons of work outside of star wars, i don't understand why he could not have done a better job.  and no cinematographer worth his salt would have shot on HD Video for clones and sith, period,  They would have turned the job down as it is a disgrace to ones own craft to aim lower.

Things might change if those red cameras are adopted that can do film resolution and over supposedly, i wonder if we would have gotten to this point without lucas pushing the technology.

But he certainly got on the bandwagon quite a few years short of the goal of film quality in an easier to manipulate form like video.

It is truly sad that most movies and films these days look like videogames than films.  CGI has overtaken everything including good storytellling and acting.  Most movies look like hyped up cartoons for crying out loud.

There are sometimes exceptions but these cases are few and far between.  Idiocy and in your face cgi action sellls to the mainstream who are dumbed down on bad reality shows.    But this is the age of bad popcorn movies and the blame mainly lies at spielberg and lucas feet.

I'd think the laserdisc would be the best option.  I can deal with a few shots being lower-quality than the others (I'll have to for my "Trilogy" edit series, anyway).

Yes but in order to tackle this editing challenge he'll need to fix his blasted remote control! DAMN!!!

Also this particular laserdisc was supposed to have near-DVD quality anyway.

Not quite.  I have the laserdisc.   The transfer is dark and muddy looking and is clv instead of cav, being a laserdisc there are lines every now and then in the picture being interlaced.  Yes it is worlds better than the bad widescreen us vhs that i have.  The letterbox tape actually has less resolution than the pan and scan one, though that problem is gone on the laserdisc or the dvd.

Plus it is non anamorphic just like the gout being from a laserdisc and all, lol.

The best version of the theatrical is the digital video broadcast.  I don't think anyone has preserved it have they?  I think there may have been something called a TB release whatever that means.  I read of once on russ15's site.

Oh for fuck sake why cant we just leave some movies alone...... To me, sequels will always be more acceptable than just "rebooting" a franchise, it completely devalues movies these days, there could always be that idea lingering that "we can just remake it" and it's turning hollywood into a giant clusterfuck, excuse me, a bigger clusterfuck than it has to be.

While I agree with you on general principle, there have been cases of remakes actually being (arguably, of course) superior to the original.

The few remakes I feel actually do improve upon the source material:

- The Thing (1982)
- Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - I should note here that I do enjoy the original quite a bit, I just think the Sutherland-starring version is far superior
- Ocean's 11 (2001) - not so much "superior to" as "just as good as"
- Cape Fear (1991)
- Ben-Hur (1959)
- 3:10 to Yuma (2007)

That's all I can think of at the moment.  Then there are the remakes that change enough that they're still good, but not really comparable to the original (such as Seven Samurai vs The Magnificent Seven, or Yojimbo vs Fistful of Dollars).

My point is, while most remakes are unnecessary and utter shit, sometimes they work.

Star Wars is sort of a remake of Hidden Fortress though not really.  The 1974 script though was a blatant ripoff in my opinion.  Then you have shot for shot remakes like the prisoner of zenda.

Or absolute shit like the remake of psycho.

Or blatant remakes without having the right to the original like disturbia being supposedly an unauthorized remake of rear window.

Seven Samurai and Yojimbo are so superior to magificent seven and fistful of dollars it is not even funny.

Akira Kurosawa was not compensated For hollywoods theft, or Leones unauthorized remakes.

I mean if they were inspired by and not just blatant ripoffs it would be better in my opinion.  Like Kurosawa always claimed John Ford as an inspiration.  You can see the influence in some of the films but none are blatant ripoffs o John Ford pictures.

Does not matter how much i love the man with no name trilogy and like eastwood in that role or think Leone was a brilliant filmaker.  The eastwood character is clearly an Americanization of the Mifune character.

The only reason to transpose a samurai piece to a western and have it work so well is the mark of the western on kurosawas films, though has been overstated.

WTF?

Those Look like Prequel posters but with the original characters.  Please keep the two seperate.  You have one good trilogy and one bad trilogy.  The 2 need not be mixed unless you are one of those "saga" fans.

For the record i'm just being a wise ass and not being serious, those are pretty good mockups in photoshop.

Are they after the new Struzan style?

I know they did a retro prequel poster with padme and anakin doing luke and leia's pose from one of the original star wars posters, now known as episode IV.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

Because Lucas probably thought a floating chair was a neat and cute idea, like giving yoda a frickin lightsaber.

Or Jar Jar Binks in Episode 1, you get the picture?

I think the Emperor and yoda having sabers weakens them as characters.

And where was that badass fight Sam Jackson hinted at between Windu and Anakin?

He just gets his hand chopped off and pushed out a window like a total wimp.

Talk about underusing Samuel Jackson.

What another lightsaber duel would have been one too many?

The acting in Episode III is also unbelievably bad.  "UNLIMITED POWERRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"  "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

kenobi :Don't try it Anakin I have the high ground

Anakin:  You underestimate my powerrr!!!!! ( does three back flips in the air before getting all his limbs but his metal arm cut off in one go.)

I was watching the movie just a few minutes the other night on tv.  And was take aback at just how Awful Ian Mcdiarmid and Hayden are.

Ian can act i have seen him in other films where he was not haming it up and phoning it in.

Hayden on the other hand cannot act period.  Every movie i have seen him in has been an awful performance.

I wonder if those rather warts and all interviews will not be cut from the Making of Empire Strikes Back by Rinzler.

No word yet on if it is a completely new book, which seems highly likely.

If we follow the schedule of releases since making of star wars with a three year gap between each.  Making of Return of the Jedi won't come out til 2013,lol.

Time

Indiana Jones V

Transformers 3

Die Hard V

Terminator V

No More raping the Alien And Predator franchises,  at least stop them from making more films.

I hope that rocky VII never happens.

Not sure i want to see Rambo V either.

For the love of god no more star wars films period.  Clone Wars was a piece of shit that bombed when the pieces of shit prequels made Lucas a billionaire.

Ghostbusters III seriously as if II was not retarded and kiddy enough to ruin the franchise.

I hope Universal never uses the right to make a Back to the Future IV.  They could legally make one without Robert Zemeckis or Bob Gale.

I also hope JAWS V never happens or Jurassic Park IV

Star Wars Episodes 1-3 should have never been made period.

I am sure there are people that wish they would be remade.

And Indiana Jones IV should not be remade, it should not even exist.  The end of last crusade was the perfect ending.

X-men, needs to be taken away from Fox and redone.  X-3 was a mediocre film,Wolverine a giant pile of shit.  This proposed young actor prequel recasting "first class" is dumb.  It is only good if they follow the comics being a throwback to the Kirby Era.  Something Tells me they won't be too faithful to the material.

I'm surprised with how pitiful things are they are not doing astonishing X-men as a film directed by Whedon himself, lol.

Lucasfilm is releasing another bare bones 4 episode clone wars dvd instead of a full season set.
Time

Lucasfilm is not so stupid as to make a release on a niche format that not everyone has in their homes blu ray, when the vast majority have DVD.  They would lose money.  They have no stake in helping SONY and the other corporations invested in Blu RAY.

That would be as stupid as releasing a film only on laserdisc, but not on vhs back in the day.

Almost all my family and friends except maybe 1 or 2 people, have standard def and dvd.

I only know one person who has a blu ray player.

I know these days Lucasfilm is not like they were back in the day when star wars was available on vhs, laserdisc, betamax, CED, VHD and so on.

If Lucas was all about getting his feet wet with the new formats and desperate to make money the trilogy of star wars would have been on dvd many years earlier.

Lucas being the person who claims they made no money on star wars on vhs and that they only sold 400,000 copies versus the millions E.T. sold.  This after star wars was re-released already several times and on pay cable like HBO.  I mean unbelievable star wars may have had the greatest repeat business ever in the cinemas.  They made a shit load of money.  He acts like they lost money and that is why no one likes the originals.

Then again this is coming from the same guy who allegedly said jedi never turned a profit to david prowse of all people, lol.

Is George Lucas in the media much anymore?
Time

What is terribly ironic is He just recently received the Gene Siskel Film Visionary Award.

Although Siskel was not around to say how awful the prequels Episode II and III were and give them thumbs down.

He was also recently interviewed by the Director of Iron Man.

He is in the media lately talking about that tuskegee airmen movie, and a possible indiana jones V he talked about last year.

Promoting Clone Wars animated and gearing up for the live action show.

Lucas is incredibly busy producing stuff and no way near being retired.

Second Season of Clone Wars coming soon.  He has to approve the general designs and story outlines and scripts on the show.  and i would venture to say he is heavily involved, since his daughter is a writer on the show and star wars is his baby too, lol.

Does anyone have good reasons why he should not have imput?

I mean the dude created star wars and it is his anyway, despite the prequels being half the movies the originals were i still enjoy them embarrisngly enough as well as indiana jones IV.  And i have to block out the bad cringeworthy acting, and dialogue to enjoy them.  Which is incredibly irritating.

Do Video Games Sometimes have better stories than films ?
Time

Now the Dig i do remember via the novelization by Alan Dean Foster, lol.

Never played through the game just had a demo of the first level that came with the book.

Fate of Atlantis i like a lot but the voice person they chose for indiana jones was lame. why no harrison ford?

Still it was okay.  The guy they got for the newest game is infinetely worse and just annoying.

One of the old lucas games i used to love was Maniac Mansion not much of a story there though.

'Public Enemies' and Inaccurate Locations
Time

Johnny Depp is an actor to watch certainly.  I think he is very highly talented which you really would not know from watching the bad popcorn pirates trilogy, though i liked curse of the black pearl, lol.

What happened to Christian Bale?  I liked him in Batman Begins but found his voice a bit grating in the dark knight and terminator salvation.

Rescue dawn was awful imho as well.

Though i liked 3:10 to Yuma.  But thought it was not as good as Eastwood's unforgiven.

As directors go i find Michael Mann to be pretty good.  Maybe not as good as Martin Scorcese, Brian DePalma. Francis Ford Coppola, or Ridley Scott.  Still he is excellent.

I think Heat is an underated film personally.  Collateral was amazing as well.

Do you think a longer cut or directors cut of Public Enemies will be released on dvd and blu ray?

How was the pacing in the film, or i should say movie since no film was used as you say.

On another subject what did you think of Tom Hanks and Road to Perdition?

Are their depth of field issues in the camera work because it was shot on video? I mean Public Enemies of course.  What is your opinion as a student of film.  What would you have done if you were the cinematographer ChaisawAsh?

  • Digibook Packaging - with book (around 40 pages or so) featuring concept drawings and sketches
