I know you will hate me for saying so but this is what i think.

This game is pure garbage.  Darth Vader in the original trilogy did not survive death but this cardboard throw away character Starkiller does wtf?

If they bring in Cloning that is even dumber than Palpatine creating the rebellion.

Somehow this non canon character is more powerful than Anakin Skywalker/Darth VAder, more powerful than Luke Skywalker, Obi Wan Kenobi, Yoda.

I go into games for the storytelling myself, the gameplay has to be top notch too but what good is it if its just mashing buttons i can play god of war, street Fighter, or smash bros for that.

Consider this game not on my list but Final Fantasy XIII and Mass Effect 2 are. Both have phenomenal stories and interesting characters. Both evoke the kind of fantasy and sci fi i used to enjoy in films and literature before hollywood became braindead.

George Lucas is never getting another dollar of my money unless its a restored oot, i won't be conned this time by Lucas and the Critics so i won't be in line for Indiana Jones V the Search for the Idiots soon parted from their money.

Games that are pure fun for their gameplay is what Nintendo has always been good at with Mario, Zelda and Metroid. I don't own a wii and don't plan on buying one.  I am however going to buy another X-box 360.  To me the PS3 is worth one game metal gear 4.

VGA on Spike tonight.  They announced Force Unleashed 2, Batman Arkham Asylum 2, Green Day Rock Band, Tron Evolution, Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands.

I haven't played Batman AA yet, but it's nice they're working on a sequel.  And this may be an unpopular opinion, but I am very excited for Force Unleashed 2.  I thoroughly enjoyed the first.  As long as they don't screw it up.  ;)

What would the point of a force unleashed 2 be?

Starkiller is dead and the Rebellion has begun.  There is no story.  Unless it is in the infinities universe as the ultimate sith extra levels.

I mean it would be nice to see Juno Eclipse again but the next story would be star wars a new hope followed by the other 2 films.

We already saw Vader's secret apprentice.  What are they going to just rehash the first game with another apprentice?

I mean unless the sequel is set after return of the jedi and features the new jedi order.  I mean there are only 3 jedi in the oot.  How many jedi can vader find that never existed before the game was scripted, lol.

Luke VS the Emperor- What if Vader hadn't been there?
Time

Vaderisnothayden said:

It's not certain the emperor would have been killed in the death star explosion. Maybe he could have escaped in the last moments like Luke eventually did.

Luke couldn't have handled the Emperor by himself. Not enough power. And if he did somehow kill the emperor he'd have probably gone dark because of doing it in anger. But I think Vader was very destined to be there. And I'm not just talking about the bloody prophecy. Destiny is mentioned in the OOT and I think it's reasonable to think that in a fairytale like Star wars the characters were destined to fulfil certain roles. Vader was destined to be there and the only question was what side he'd end up taking. Also, Luke wasn't just going to go hand himself over to any old imperials just o meet the emperor. He handed himself over because he knew Vader was there. Meeting Vader was a certainty.

Actually the prophecy Lucas probably was talking about was the son of god.  One of his early scripts opened with a pseudo biblical passage " In the time of greatest despair there shall come a savior.  And he shall be known as the son of the suns" As in the twin suns of tatooine.

Was the sun of the suns Luke or Anakin?

Lucas borrowed from different religions while crafting star wars.  It may be blasphemy to christians that Lucas was riffing on the bible in episode 1, but he did it anyway.

His mentor Campbell studied this as well.  But instead of calling it comparitive religions he called it comparitive mythology.

The archetype of the hero born to save the world, has become something of a cliche in modern culture in film, video games and comic books, novels.

That Lucas struck such a chord with star wars proved to him that man is still obsessed with Heroes.  The man made himself very rich on this concept and explosions and special effects, lol.

The prequels were to be a direct reversal of the original trilogy with the negative side of heroism explored, too bad they fucked it all up. It should have been about Hubris.

Luke VS the Emperor- What if Vader hadn't been there?

Alright, kiddies... put on your Infinities hats (mine has a beanie!) and let's use our imaginations for a spell! We all know how Luke's face-off against Vader and Palpatine went down. He surrendered himself and focused all of his attention on his father- showing no fear and an outpouring of compassion for him.  Vader was torn between warring emotions... and while he tried to remain firmly rooted in the Dark Side and its associated subservience to the Emperor... once the Emperor's attention focused on his only son, a son who had just stood on the brink of the Dark Side and had safely stepped away... he saved his son and threw his master to his death.

Our infinities scenario picks up similarly.  Luke surrenders himself to an Imperial patrol.  But, to his disappointment, Vader is no where to be found.  Instead, he faces the Emperor alone.  What happens next?

From what i have read the idea originally would have been for Luke to confront Vader first and defeat him.  Then the Emperor would be confronted later would be why there were 9 episodes instead of 6, and Leia would not be the sister.

I'm not sure if this was before or after they decided Palpatine was a sith and not just a corrupt politician.

According to Kurtz Han would have died, and leia would have been queen of her people so Luke would have very much been alone in his confrontation of the emperor after undergoing a long period of training under the tutelage of yoda.

I guess you could say it would be like a kung fu warrior facing an opponent of one skill level and gaining strength form defeating him like in a video game or movie, and then facing the master.  He would only be strong enough through the trial of defeating Vader.  Defeating Vader would be mostly a bout of physical strength the Emperor's power being his voice and power of persuasion.

The Emperor would be so powerful he would not need to jump and twist around with a lightsaber.  Stupid prequels ruining Yoda and Palpatine by giving them lightsabers and making them warriors rather than masters of arcane knowledge.

You can thank Dark Empire for putting Ideas in Lucas head.  Palpatine's clone with a lightsaber outclasses Luke Skywalker in a duel.

Indiana Jones Trilogy (Released)
Time

Has there been any official announcement by Paramount or Lucasfilm on the Blu Ray releases?

I think they more than likely will be out next year, if Crystal Skull's release was any Indication.  Star Wars on the other hand will never see the light of day because lucas is not through with it yet.  More likely to come out towards the end of the formats life cycle is the 2004 dvd star wars set was any indication of that.

I see the oot and the 1997 versions as historically significant so i wish they would get a 1080p release like the 2004, but the odds of that happening are next to nil.

Not to sound incredulous but have the past 3 months been enough time to decide? Zion you still with us?

Not sure if anyone here noticed, but I'm the head admin on the TFN forums now. I don't get over here as much as I'd like to anymore.

Zion has officially joined the dark side, so what kind of sith lord are you?  LOL.

Just kidding hopefully you being a moderator there means the oot gets a bit more respect and the prequels being allowed to be bashed.

Sorry i meant head admin, my mistake.

The EU, and why I hate it
Time

In my opinion the prequels are the worst of the expanded universe by far.

George Lucas can call them canon until he is blue in the face and it does not make them canon just because he says so.

They don't match up with the oot the one and only true star wars canon.

I would venture even further to say the prequels are not just EU but an alternate universe continuity, for example Hayden Skywalker/Vader does not match the mentality of the original star wars trilogy, nor do the jedi.  It is Star Wars in name only sure you have these dudes in robes who have the same names and carry a lightsaber but they are completely out of character.

The Hayden version of Anakin Skywalker is no more the true version than Chris Pine's alternate universe Captain Kirk.  Both belong to a false backstory and not the true origin story of said fictional universes.

I reject the prequels as the true origin story of how the empire came to power and how darth vader came to be who he is.  I'm still waiting for a version that fits with what we saw in the originals.  If no real version is ever made i can imagine my own thats better than georges cartoon cgi and jar jar binks and whiny wooden hayden crap.

I find it helps to note there are only 3 star wars films and 3 indiana jones films, that way my memories are not destroyed.

Zahn's Other SW Books (was: Survivor's Quest vs Outbound Flight)

C3PX said:

I too have been interested in reading the later books by Timothy Zahn, but haven't made up my mind to do so yet. Pollard's post has definitely piqued my interest. How about Zahn's latest Star Wars book, Allegiance? Has anyone read that?

The one written as a love letter to those nerds that dress up as stormtroopers, the mighty 501st?

The one Zahn stuck Pink Five into.

It is a decent novel but like all Zahn's books after the trilogy not very good.

I mean if the hand of thrawn duology was any hint at to how much suck the rest of his novels would be in comparison to the first 3.  That coming from someone who has enjoyed all of his novels including vision of the future.

The stormtroopers are not really bad guys kind of angle is kind of typical of the pathetic modern EU mindset of moral ambiguity.

Incorporating prequel trilogy stuff is a mistake the writers should be able to write their own better prequels and pretend those bad lucash ones don't exist.

These days if you want to escape the bad prequels and clone wars in the EU forget about it as they have now tied all new novels into that crap and stiffled the writers creativity.

Now you can't branch off the oot and read post jedi novels without references to Hayden Skywalker and co and their supposed real backstory of star wars.

Doesn't the Thrawn Trilogy claim that Spaarti cloning cylinders were used during the clone wars as opposed to whatever method the Kaminoans used? Discrepancy! How can both be canon? Ret-con needed!

^(Rhetorical.)

And I enjoyed Shadows of the Empire. I thought it was a pretty good piece of literature when I first read it.

I wonder if I would think it's good literature today... and whether that matters at all.

Argument à la C3PX.

C3PX said:

Why does it matter if it is considered canon or not? If you enjoyed it, then it wasn't a waste of time.

Thats why they should have had Zahn write the prequel trilogy and fire george lucas off his own creation since he destroyed it himself.

Irregular sequels and spiritual sequels?
Time

Star Trek 2009, spiritual sequel and prequel and reboot all at the same time, lol.

Its a reboot yet it has Leonard Nimoy in it, lol.  Like they wanted a new audience but wanted the old to stay too to make double the money, did not work in any case original series fans are boycotting the jj franchise.

Man sometimes they just can't decide if its a continuation or a reboot Superman Returns comes to mind.

Then you have film like Casino Royale which is supposed to be a prequel yet you have the female M from brosnan bonds, cellphones and a mention of 911 and it is very clearly not set in the 1950's or 1960's whenever the novel happened.

AVATAR and 3D in general....

I agree.  I often times go to the movies for a break from the stresses of daily life.  I don't care to be preached to, or scolded - particularly for actions\practices\policies\etc that I didn't participate in, don't agree with, nor would I support.  If it's a historically accurate period piece, such as Dances With Wolves, I'm all for it. (One of my top ten films).   If it's a preachy, self-serving metaphor - I won't bother.  I'd rather see the information much more clearly, in a documentary.

That said....

Racial discrimination & genocide are not political nonsense.

Okay you got me there i agree.  But the theme has already been explored in Dances with Wolves not science fiction, and in science fiction in star trek insurrection.

See this stuff would totally fit star trek, they would just slip an issue in there under the disguise of science fiction settings, still i feel Cameron's gotten far too preachy since T2.  Its his right as a storyteller and director.  I am more interested in the human relationships in the film, even the humanlike aliens.  The action parts are okay i guess too.

I thought the themes had their place for instance in district 9 because they were in service to the plot and not randomly thrown in there on some  whim like the bush'ism inserted into revenge of the sith.

Having not seen Avatar yet i was still cannot judge it too much, it just felt a bit like old trodden ground in new fangled 3-D. If cameron creates a believable world with characters you care for and throws in romance and adventure like an old hollywood swashbuckler i'm all for the films success.  I just don't want another unwieldy and overly pretentious film again like Titanic despite the emotional underpinings of the drama the history was junk, the only thing that was accurate was that the Titanic exactly sank.

Now as for Avatar will these themes be only a part of the whole and actually have a point in the plot or a nice little nugget or easter egg for those who care to notice.

I mean will the Navi be like the underdogs sort of like the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi, versus the evil planet earth people who come to this new world only for profit.

I mean if they can make a message not heavy handed and connect you with the meanings through the characters i'm all for that.  I guess my only beef with these ideals and messages sometimes is the way in which they are presented and not the thematic material themselves.  Speaking from a purely visceral human level and moving you greatly rather than feeling like you were just at some sermon.

Info: 70mm reel 2 of empire strikes back up on ebay, not my auction and sadly the film is pinkish
Time

This will most likely be pulled from the listings since it is not film cels but an entire reel.  They don’t allow 35mm or 70mm as i recall.

I would buy it if it was film cel’s as it is a print i won’t touch it.  Still Interesting.  Only the second time i have seen a reel like this the last time it was return of the jedi and featured luke and vader’s duel.

I removed the link because i figured it was an illegal auction.  Don’t want to violate the forum rules not sure if this is one, but just in case, lol.

From what i have seen in the trailer this film feels an awful like a sci fi treatment of the American natives land being stolen, which was also done in star trek insurrection.

If district 9 was about how white people were bad to the black people, then this film is how white Europeans were bad to the Indians aka native Americans.

I had enough of that preaching in high school, i go to a film for either a good story or an escape from reality not politics nonsense.

no one has ever done scans of the 70mm film frames for star trek 1 as far as i'm aware.

The blu ray release and new dvd they did not bother to go back to the 65mm vista vision opticals and scan them at 8k or higher resolution, but neither has lucas for star wars and probably won't considering that is the oot and not cgi version.

What you do have is someone like Ridley Scott going back to Blade Runner and doing such a scan of the vista vision effects, and it looks phenomenal on blu ray.

And those collectors film frames similar to the Star Wars 70mm frames had to come from somewhere!

Aha see according to that the 70mm only came out in 1982 as a double feature with wrath of khan, so even if there was a 6 track which there was in 1982 it could not be called the theatrical audio because it was not released in 79 despite the intent to do so.  It was probably a very limited re-release not a nationwide re-release like star wars had and empire and jedi several times.

I would give a lot to see a triple billing of the 70mm of the oot of star wars, especially to see empire in 70mm.

Will the isolated score still be a feature of this when done or is that scrapped?

It is my favorite thing about the editdroid trilogy.

Also what about the rare documentaries and press books and presskits?

The magazines and etc.

Or were those only features of the mega set that you have since jettisoned?

I can understand the point of not doing the theatrical now that it has been released on dvd, albeit in 5.1 sound lacking the original 2 channel PCM.

I would not know the first thing about adding the laserdisc audio from the 79 theatrical to the new dvd as a custom for myself.

Since the film was not released in 70mm and 6 track during the premiere in 79 i am lead to assume this 5.1 was a remix of the original audio from the 2 channel.  Unless there was a re-release in 70mm and 6 track and i can find no info online of such except your mention of the sit and prosper marathon.

2-6 were released in 70mm and 6 track so their dvd mixes are essentially authentic remixed versions of the 70mm audio on dvd in 5.1.

¤ A NEW HOPE ¤ Score Restoration Project - (To be updated) (* unfinished project *)
Time

It was not a dig or attack on your work in any shape or form.  I was just remarking how Lucas and however else manages the music has access to the first generation original recordings and is not preserving them for future generations.

An insult to all John Williams fans and oot star wars fans as well.

Empires originals were so far gone they had to transfer them very carefully and those probably can never be used again.  They were rotting in a basement at one of lucas facilties under a bunch of junk and there was water damage from a leak in the roof or some other such thing.

The dude set up an archive for star wars props but it is crazy to think that the films and music themselves are not being given the same care.  It makes me furious, i am no historian but these films mean a lot to me and millions of other people.

The thing is if the original analog recordings are not preserved they will never have the starting point in the future for any kind of restoration as a third generation or fourth generation digital copy does not similate the original depth of the recording.

Not only will they lose the only originals in there posession, to have any kind of release in the future they will have to rely on the BAD SE digital copy or else completely re-record the entire scores again.

With modern technology they could put out the highest fidelity recording of star wars trilogy ever heard,  from the first gen masters lightyears ahead of the truncated 70s and 80's album arrangements masters.

The only originals they could not locate during the post production of the special edition and remixing were the jedi original masters and those have since been found.  They put out the original recordings for empire but risner botched it so badly i wonder if it was a deliberate creative decision on lucas part.

According to a report ken wannberg says only star wars SE release is close to what they would have heard in the recording booth, all recordings for empire and jedi released leave a lot to be desired in terms of an audiophile release.

At least that is what i remember reading from someones article who did personal correspondance with the original people involved.

Supposedly the empire release would be perfect if not for the improper mixing of the multi track elements and the reversed channels on some songs.

As for Return of the Jedi they had a copy of what the anthology team had access to, a further generation from what even the anthology people had.  Then they put it through further equalization and noise reduction filters.  It sounds horrible possibly the worst CD i have ever owned of a symphonic score, period.  So bad i took out my record player and put on the LP from Return of the Jedi which sounds phenomenal by the way.

For which the album masters have never been located by the way, the polydor people from overseas could not be bothered to look for them, so they are assumed lost.  Some tracks on the anthology believe it or not were taken directly from the CD,lol.

Someone did a LP rip once but it is no longer active on a certain site.  I wish i still had that or the equipment to do my own.

It is just plain sad that the re-recordings done for jedi by various orchestras through the years have better sound yet don't duplicate the same performance as the LSO sadly.  I think the best ones are the utah symphony, and the npo under charles gerhardt, even the Boston pops sound better and less ruined by overfiltering.

Also for years the best presentation of the empire strikes back music though incomplete was the album released on varese sarabande records under the NPO.

It is obvious the limitations on all the official released recordings in the 70s and 80's was do to the playback technology people owned at home at the time, and the ability to faithfully reproduce what was heard in the recoding studio through to the albums using the technology of the time.  These were understandable limitations of the time and would be exceptable if people still used those old analog stereo systems before the advent of digital everything, but when they did the special editions that excuse no longer applied nor does it aplly to any modern release of the catalog of the original trilogies music.

The excuse if they are good enough as they are and lets just keep releasing the same imperfect crap over and over again to make money on our fans who will buy it anyway because they are dumb.  After all they ate up the latest table scraps of Lucas the prequels with relish, and finished it with a nice glass of Lucas Kool Aide.
