Why release the OT as a separate box set if the originals are not going to be there? It is a box set that appeals to no one. All you get is just the 04 DVDs upgraded to BD for twice the money. It is just an overpriced counterfeit product that is passed off as the real version.

I assure you that there are many people out there who don't care for the prequels but don't mind the SEs. Like my uncle, who said he liked the originals better, when the SE came out,, but now has the 2004 DVD set and is ok with it, to him they're just movies and the changes don't bother him but he doesn't like the prequels and isn't the type to watch supplements, so he'd definitely buy the separate OT set, if he cared about HD, which he doesn't...

If you buy either trilogy separately and not the saga box you don't get the 3 bonus discs.

Say you just wanted the 2004 in HD with the oot deleted scenes.  Well you cannot get the bonus deleted scenes without also purchasing the turd prequel trilogy.

I would love to have the 1997 special editions and oot on the blu ray set as well.  Too bad no fan prior to 2004 will be satisfied.  Those happy with the 2004 crap will be excited beyond measure.  Me i am not one bit happy.

What does the saga set not have.

No Theatrical prequels.  No Imax cut of episode II.  No theatrical 77-83 oot, no 1997 special edition.  No original audio.

Return of the Jedi cut-scene

It is possible Hamill forgot or more likely that a double was used.

They had intended to come back and shoot the footage with mark according to the making of book, that does not mean they did.

The only place with the record of the shooting of all the footage would be at skywalker ranch, possibly somewhere in the archives or records stored.

Unless the call sheets made it to the ebay sellers.

The Worst thing about the prequel films for me as a fan.
Time

Furthermore the fact that Anakin is more fleshed out as a character in the novels and comics as well as the 2 different clone wars animated series proves Lucas is a hack who cannot write.

Also the characters follow very little logic for what motivates them or compels them to comiit the actions they do in the prequel films.

It is the writing and characters where the films come apart and are hollow.  The visuals hold up, even if there is a bit of over reliance on cgi.

It is really a shame because someone could have come in and added all these things to the scripts in rewrites of Lucas skeleton plot, that followed and weaved a tale consistent withe the original trilogy from 1977-1983.

I would not be surprised to hear that Lucas asked Kasden and he was turned down, but it is probably more likely he wanted to control all aspects of the films creation and thought he could slide on by with nothing but visuals and people would overlook the lack of story because of the great visual quality.

It fits with his idea of cinema verite and non story content in films, a purely visual film that tells the story in visuals and carries it along with music and sound effects.

I've just got confirmation from a Laserdisc collector in Italy and he says that THX on Laserdisc only exists in English NTSC (from US) and PAL (from UK). There are no Italian, German or French version of the film on Laserdisc.

You forget the Japan Laserdisc in NTSC, and the UK one supposedly is not uncut, but essentially you are correct.  I am still waiting on hearing whether or not the japan version has cuts or censors, since long ago i read that it censored the sex scene.

The Japan version was said to have a better print and sound in English with burnt in Japanese subs.  Since the guy selling it for over a hundred dollars claimed these things i was skeptical since you can get the us laserdisc usually for over 25 bucks on Ebay or on the laserdisc database.

Or Lucas could add Boba Fett/Jango Fett to episode I, currently the only film Boba does not show up in.

I remember when he was put in star wars special edition and was like WTF.

If shaw was replaced in the 1997 version of Jedi i would have walked out of the screening i was at.  Same for Jango fett's voice in empire strikes back, or jar jar in jedi..

Another problem i see is that because of Episode II and III you have Darth Vader in 5 of the six films/movies, the only one where Anakin remotely is like a person who is not an evil asshole is episode 1.

Never mind that in Episode II and III vader without the suit is not the badass villain but an emo whiny kid, whom you actually are glad is left in the lava in episode III.

In Episode II and III we never see Anakin Skywalker as a character, the good fireind of obi wan seduced by the darkside.  An essentually good perosn forced into making hard choices that destroy him.

The whole time he is Darth Vader Anakin never shows up.

He was shown as a caring person in Episode 1 even if annoying, and not very well fleshed out as a character because he was a little kid.

The Jedi are not guardians of justice they Are amoral douchebags in the prequels.  Portrayed exactly as you would imagine a corrupt ruling body of a religion would be.

Obi Wan and Yoda are portayed as dunces, and Padme is a compete retard or worse in II and III by making excuses for genocide.  Nothing like Princess Leia.  Except for Episope 1 we never get to see Anakin Paralled with luke's jounrey, story.

Basically the characters and characterizations in these movies could have been fleshed out and really good and complemented the original trilogy and instead they make you hate the characters in the oot and have contempt for them, especially yoda and ben kenobi.

Arcada Theater in Illinois playing Star Wars Wednesday December 29th 2010
Time

Other than at the Lucasfilm Star Wars celebration events where the screen the 2004 video versions in DLP, as far as i am aware before that all legally screened prints were the 1997 versions which i don't actually hate too much compared to the 2004.

If i had to choose i would pick a 35mm print of the special editions 1997 with correct colors and star wars with no botched sound mix.

But i prefer the 77 version especially the dye transfer Technicolor one above all.

The one 97 version that dissapointed me soundwise was Jedi, the music seemed to be dialed down or crappy because of digital fixing of the pops or analog noise in the original recordings.  In fact thanks to Rinzler even empire spposedly had sawpped shannels on some scenes.

Star Wars 97 version was not effected, even if its Dolby mix was not as good as its prior theatrical 77 6 track dolby mix in 70mm.

Did Thx 1138 ever get a ntsc VHS release in the USA in letterbox ?

It took me forever to find the pan and scan since it was out of print.  They had to order it from a warehouse for me and it cost 40 dollars.

This was long before episode 1 hit the theaters cannot remember the year i purchased it exactly but the videotape was from 1991 i believe.

As far as i know it got only a single release in letterbox as a laserdisc once only in the United States.  A hard to find laserdisc that you cannot find accept on ebay or the laserdisc database.

I also rented the original American Graffiti VHS original version, but the quality was less than spectacular.  The changes made to the DVD i hate.

The real funny thing about this thread and its a credit to Adywan is that his color corrected HD empire strikes back could be mistaken for the real thing, when most likely the blu rays will be shit colors but better resolution in the source since ady does not have access to the 1080P master files, or the pressed blu ray.

I don't have a blu ray player or a media center but if i do ever get one AdyWan's Star Wars HD and Empire HD will be the ones i watch, not Lucash 2004 hackwork.

This thread is comedy Gold!

Seriously though how pathetic will it be to have the deleted scenes of the oot on blu ray in HD without the actual films, lol.  Because i don't count the 2004 as the movies i loved as a kid and made me a fan.

The hell for original trilogy fans is not over either.  Not only will the real movies not be on the blu rays, but they will probably break records in blu ray sales, and then Lucas with continue to destroy star wars with his 3-D versions of the 2004 versions.

He can afford to give away half his fortune to charity when you consider how much money he will make on the blu rays and the 3D releases.

He just supposedly spent 30 mill to convert phantom menace.  If that does well each other film will be converted in turn unless they do it as a one shot deal.  Supposedly some country in india or singapore is converting them on the cheap.

We can get Jar Jar stepping in poo in 3D but no restored original trilogy, its plain madness.

Irvin Kershner has passed away

I meant to add my own sadness at hearing this news at the time, but got side-tracked.

Anyway, it's good to know that his most famous movie has just been announced as being amongst the latest ones that are being preserved for posterity by the US Library of Congress as part of it's National Film Registry -  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-12085224

Couple of thoughts -  I take it that it's the PRE-SE version of ESB that they'll be preserving!  Also, since STAR WARS (again, I hope it's the original version...) has already been chosen for preservation, surely they can't miss out on the last chapter eventually?  I'm not sure that the prequels will get the same attention however...

They cannot protect empire from Lucas.  Whats to stop him from recutting the film now that Kersh is gone.  Like he did to Marquand's Jedi.

 Fixed it for ya. =D

Can't be a Buddhist-Methodist anymore than you can be an atheist-Christian or a Muslim-Christian.  Two separate religions cannot be combined into one.   Anymore than a person for classification purposed can be an Democrat -Republican

I take what he said as combining his being raised as a Christian and the values he took away from that, to his adult self and eastern spiritualism he embraced.

I also understand other than in idealism he is not a classical Buddhist because he does not really seem to practice the religion its more of a social/psychological construct taken from his study of Joseph Campbell than anything.

You know like new age spiritualism and Zen the left embraced in the sixties, which confuses those in the east who are true adherents to the religion who it is a lifestyle and not just a mental vision/construct.

Wow, this was cool since I was under the impression that she had dropped off the radar and was basically MIA (i.e., doesn't want to be pestered by Star Wars nerds). I had heard that she was in softcore pornography, which only added to her mystery ("softcore porn" I think carries more of a stigma today though, whereas acting in a soft porn/erotic films in the early and mid 70s was more respectable since there was a lot of mainstream crossover). It is very interesting to hear about the Fisher casting bluff, since I don't believe that anecdote has been told anywhere else. Her description of Lucas and Kurtz seems pretty consistent with other people, even if she says both Lucas Kurtz were Quakers (Lucas isn't but Kurtz is; the fact that she assumed they both were is a telling indication of why the two worked together frequently, as conservatism such as that is rare in Hollywood).

George's father was a staunch Methodist and a conservative Republican.  Lucas is a Buddhist and a liberal Democrat, which probably was in the beginning done out of Rebellion against his upbringing.

Lucas considered himself a fiscal conservative and social liberal when Skywalking was written.  Maybe in the beginning he was a moderate but politically he has now since the prequel films were made gone far to the left.
