Info Wanted & Help: looking for... The lost footage of 2001

I think Warner Brothers hinted at the possibility in one of their HTF chats way back in 2004, so the rumored special edition was expected to pop up sometime this year, but now it's looking like it would have to be in 2006 instead. If that doesn't pan out, then I bet we'll see a nice HD-DVD version in 2008 for its 40th anniversary. There's no way WB will pass up a milestone date like that for this movie and not milk the fans for a few more bucks with a new re-release. Then again, they missed the chance to do a 25th anniversary special edition of The Shining this year...

Info & Info Wanted: King Kong 1976

Yup, you're right... I got the DVD today. It's definitely 144 minutes (10+ min longer than the theatrical version) and its completely in widescreen. Picture quality is pretty good. I'm sure you're right about him using that french DVD as the source for the extra scenes. I'd still like to get the full 3 hour TV version though. Perhaps we could do a trade if you're interested in this version too...

the quality is second generation VHS. extras are only the trailer from the r1 dvd.

Really? That contradicts even more of what the auction description shows. In addition to the theatrical trailer, his DVD set supposedly has the television teaser commercial, part 2 previews for the 2nd night of airing, and some kind of slideshow gallery. Even the pics of the different menus on his auction show this. Are you sure your version is the same one in the auction I linked above?

I was hoping special editions of both this and the sequel (King Kong Lives) would be released to coincide with Peter Jackson's remake, but apparently not. The original films were the more deserving of course, but Kong is Kong.

When the 1933 Kong DVD was announced earlier this year, the 1976 Kong was rumored to be getting a special edition release as well. And yet when it came out it was just a barebones re-release with nothing but the trailer, same as the first DVD release. Only difference I'm aware of is the new DVD cover. I was disappointed that it didn't get a better release this time, at least with the extra scenes from the TV cut. What a waste...

Someone has already put together what appears to be a nice fan-made extended cut DVD with some minor extras. He's been selling it on Ebay lately and I just bought one last week. I hope to be getting it any day now so I'll let you guys know about the quality. The odd thing is that he claims its in widescreen. No idea how he did that since this would have to have been taken from the extended TV broadcast. He's got good feedback from others who have already bought this DVD, so I'm assuming its exactly as he describes in the auction. I guess we'll know soon enough....

Info: The Frighteners - Signature Collection laserdisc preservation thread
Time
If there's enough funds left to warrant it, you could invest it towards getting the Godfather Trilogy laserdisc set in an attempt to do the ultimate chronological cut of the GF films on DVD, as mentioned in this other thread:

http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=11&threadid=3790

Back on topic though... I'm thrilled that we're finally getting a Frighteneners special edition with the great extras ported from the laserdisc. I never thought this would be officially released on DVD. It's ironic that it happens just as plans of doing a fan-rip of the laserdisc were in progress. That's just like buying a barebones DVD that's been out for years right before a special edition is suddenly announced. The same thing happened with DigitalFreakNYC's rip of the criterion laserdisc of The Game, which is now on the verge of being released officially on DVD with all the laserdisc extras ported over to it.

'Eddie Murphy: Delirious' preservation? (Released)

Its not uncommon for artists of all types to want to distance themselves from
their earlier material. Happens with bands as well.

Well the difference is that Eddie holds the rights to Delirious and not the other films he did, so if he wants to keep it from being released on DVD then unfortunately that's his choice. I think the main reason is because of the very non-politically correct stuff in it, specifically the jokes about gays and AIDs as I recall (been 2 yrs since I last saw it). It's a damn shame that political correctness has influenced Eddie Murphy himself. I think the last edgy movie he did was Metro or Distinguished Gentleman, back in the mid 90s. After that it was all the damn kiddy movies like Dr. Doolittle, Nutty Professor, Daddy Day Care, etc. Sigh...

KING KONG - The Spider Pit Restored Cut (Released)
Time
The ironic thing is that someone is whining about piracy about the one and only movie on here that's now in public domain. Anyone can do whatever they want with the 1933 King Kong and release it themselves since it ended up in public domain years ago. The only thing that is technically pirated in this fan edit project is the new spider pit scene Peter Jackon's group filmed.

That's correct. Eddie holds the rights now and apparently wants to downplay his past raunchier humor in favor of the more family-friendly Eddie that's been making films like Dr. Doolittle and Haunted Mansion for the last decade. It's a shame he's turned his back on the personality/humor that made him so famous to begin with. I miss the Eddie Murphy of 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop and his brief run on SNL.

Info & Info Wanted: Godfather 1 and 2 Chronoligical version edit project?
Time
Yeah he meant that all the extra scenes on the DVD set are taken from the additional stuff in the Epic and Saga versions, except for an alternate intro to part 2 that aired with the Saga version on TV.

Something else I just remembered is that many tv airings of Godfather 3 have a different opening which is a montage of scenes from GF1 and 2 to recap the story, but shown as flashbacks as Michael sits and ponders it all at the Lake Tahoe estate (the same shot we see of him at the end of the theatrical GF2). However it looks like they used extra unused GF2 footage of him from that scene for this alternate opening between the flashback moments.

Info & Info Wanted: Godfather 1 and 2 Chronoligical version edit project?
Time
This is paraphrased from the Godfather FAQ on http://www.jgeoff.com/godfather.html which explains the differences in all the video/laserdisc releases:

The Godfather Epic is the chronological version of Parts I and II released on VHS/laserdisc. It has more footage than the original two films. The Godfather Saga (aka: "Godfather: A Novel for Television" - not available for purchase on VHS/laserdisc) is the TV version of The Epic, but it has much more footage than the Godfather Epic. Most of this extra footage ended up in The Godfather Trilogy box set (Re-released in 1997), which is the chronological version of all three films, available on video/laserdisc. The Trilogy set is the one you should get if you want the most available footage. The Godfather Collection is simply the three original films in a box - no added footage, and not in chronological order, but remastered/widescreen in 1997 and later released in a similar box set on DVD in 2001.

Hopefully this helps anyone who decides to take up the project for us and needs to know what to look for on Ebay. Basically any of the extended versions wouldn't be complete, since each has scenes not in the other versions while at the same time missing some stuff that's included in the other versions. If anyone was to do an ultimate fan edit they'd need all the versions to combine all available scenes together. Personally I'd just be happy with a DVD of the Epic/Saga version since GF3 barely has anything different.

From that auction description I'm betting this is a VHS dub from a TV broadcast like I described above, from the Bravo channel or Spike TV. And that means its censored and potentially has sloppy editing from cutting out the commercial interruptions. The best way to do this project would be to use the GF Epic/Saga laserdiscs, perhaps even editing together an ultimate cut with the unique extra scenes that each version has, as well as the extra deleted scenes from the DVD that neither version implemented.
