Star Wars 1997 DTS CD-ROMs (Released)
Time

I've done a little bit of comparison work between the new foobar plugin and the older winamp version.  While the foobar plugin is nice, since it does the work of splitting the LFE and surround channels for you, I found that it does not attenuate the surrounds.  This leads to quite a bit of clipping.

I got much better results using the methods posted earlier in the thread with Ozone 5.

On a different note, I think we've always assumed that there should be a 3dB attenuation in the surround channels due to the DTS post production literature.

Here's the studio setup info from the pdf:

To me this also suggest that the LFE should be boosted by 3dB.  However, whenever I tried that, it seems wrong.  I'm just curious if anyone else has an opinion on the LFE levels.

schorman's HDTV Star Wars Saga Preservation (Released)
Time

Hey Gimli, I had actually put this on hiatus after completing new versions of ROTJ and AOTC, which were always going to be the most work to finish.  I used the hV versions of the saga as my main backup, since I wanted to avoid using the blu rays as a source, but since they were re-encodes, the quality was a little too low, and kind of discouraged me.

I tabled working on the other four films until I have more time this summer, but after reading the HDTV database thread and getting hold of the original rips for episodes 1-3 & 5, I'd like to get to work on them within the next two weeks.

I'm currently downloading the Cinemax versions of the OT and will need to compare them with the Sky versions before working on them more.

I would love to add french subs to these but I don't have a source yet.  If you have a rip from a French DVD set, that would work best.

Cheers

How do you capture DTS from a LaserDisc?
Time

Well, unfortunately, I flaked out on that guide.  But the general steps are:

1.  Bit-perfect capture LD PCM audio stream from optical or coaxial spdif output at 16bit / 44.1 kHz.

2.  Process the wav file using a program called DTS Parser.

3.  Correct the DTS frame headers using A hex editor called xvi32 And a script I created for it:

Help: looking for... 1997 Special Edition Trilogy 5.1 Audio?
Time

True dat Frink, those posts weren't there when I started typing.  Just saw them now.

Anyway, my point still stands.  For most folks correctly decoding the 97 cinema discs will be a challenge.

FWIW, I think despecializing the audio is a little pointless, anyway.  There are enough legit mixes as it is, and H_H's purist/70mm mixes are more than adequate as a Multichannel alternative.

The GOUT Sync Thread
Time

For what it's worth, as a "just-in-case" exercise, I synchronized each of the different audio mixes in my LD Audio Archive to the hypothetical versions that include every frame.  I still have the project files and would just need to export the tracks and upload.

However, at this point, I think sticking with NTSC GOUT is the way to go.
