The Phantom Menace -Theatrical Version - NTSC DVD- ADYWAN - NOW AVAILABLE
Time

Yes, they were both decoded to wav, synchronized, then re-encoded to ac3, which is a lossy process. My version was synchronized using an alternate method, and has not been re-encoded. It is bit-identical to what is on the LD, with the exception of less than .1 seconds at the two LD side changes.

Nevermind, the above image was a reconstruction. This whole Technicolor/Eastman distinction appears to be nonexistent. Technicolor matches Eastman, one font will do, all is well in the world. But I did a lovely job reconstructing the reconstruction, don’t you think?

I was wondering why there would be a difference. Good catch, btw. Can’t wait to make new subtitles with this font!

schorman's HDTV Star Wars Saga Preservation (Released)
Time

No, sorry, I’ve been really busy this school year, and I have some outside projects going on as well. I stand where I stood in October. I do have plans of hopping back into this within the next couple of weeks. At that point ROTS should be done first, and fairly quickly.

I’d also like to try some new approaches to fixing some of the encoding issues present. Namely, I’d like to try out a median script with some motion adaptive frame registration thanks to althor 😃 Until then, I may be able to make ANH available through alternate means.

Let me just clarify a few points:

  1. Legacy will be screened for Fox/Disney executives later this year. At least, that’s the plan, the discussions have started/invitations beginning, and so far, so good. We’ll see.

But to most people, it’s hard to believe, unless they really see it, just how bad a shape Star Wars is in. I mean, no other important, relevant release (they’re still making Star Wars movies, you’ll notice) is so mistreated and neglected. But a pitch is a show - all pitches are. And I’ve done God-knows-how-many of them in my career. It’s a full multi-media presentation in a theater, with lots of eye candy, and aims to lead the audience towards an inescapable conclusion. But how it’s unique and different, and most importantly, profitable, are just key elements. So certainly an analysis of the market and making that case is part of it. But it’s gotta stay entertaining, and potential laden. Legacy, should it be adopted, would be the first truly new offering in a long time - not just another repackaging, and not just a bit of hype. This is a Star Wars nobody’s really ever seen, ready for 4K… ready for a limited theatrical release if they wanted to do it. It’s a strong pitch just on its merits, but that’s by no means a slam dunk. It’s got to be done just right, pitch-perfect, at the right time with the right people and every last pushback planned for. I have help from a fantastic team. We’re on it.

… (snip)…

I’ve been mostly out of the country, and otherwise working my ass off to dig myself out of this abyss of Legacy debt 😃 So far so good, but that’s why it’s been quiet. But in terms of releases, I don’t want to put anything out ahead of the pitch. I don’t want to risk having any thunder stolen. I want to be able to end the pitch with a mic drop, basically.

Can’t tell you how thrilled I am with these updates. Thanks for logging in and spending some quality time here again. I know I really appreciate hearing exciting news on Legacy like this. Best of luck!

This is exactly what I’ve been hoping to hear since September! Good Luck Mike!

Mike, aside from audio I’d like to know if you consider mentioning any of the international versions of the films in your pitch. After all, ILM created a ton of opening crawls in different languages, including localized versions of the SW logo, which are an important part of the nostalgia of the trilogy for us non-English-speaking folks. Maybe including a staccato of several international crawls in the pitch to highlight the importance of the trilogy all over the world might be an option.

Many people would like to see the '81 English crawl preserved in some way as well.

After downloading 97’ Respecialized I will download Episode VI 2.5! Great work!
Where did you get the original Latin audio?

The Latino audio for ROTJ was actually the easy one–it was on the Region 4 GOUT DVDs. Star Wars and Empire were harder–(mostly) 35mm capture and OTA television recording, respectively. ROTJ was stereo, which is probably why Lucasfilm didn’t try to bury it like the other mono Latino dubs.

Was to the Castellano dub available on a Region 2 release, or was that sourced elsewhere?

Also, the NFO lists the Latino dub as 1.0 Mono for ROTJ.

Oh, hey, schorman, I’m so sorry, I noticed I forgot to add you to the end credits - and you really deserved a credit! I used your HDTV stuff and I think some of the audio is sourced from your releases as well! I will definitely add your name next time! At least I didn’t forget to credit you in the NFOs.

As for the GOUT shot - I wonder if anyone can find it. But it will, of course, be revealed in the comparison gallery, once I finish it - though that’s gonna take a while; I’d already spent hours compiling it and yet I haven’t even started writing the labels!

No worries. I can wait for my reflected internet fame. 😉

Also, I can upload GOUT rips after work tonight if you still need them.

Putting the finishing touches on the last couple of things I wanted to do for ROTJ v2.5 - now I’ll have to put them into the cut and render the whole thing out - hopefully I’ll have enough time to do that today and render over-night.
One last thing I’m missing (I thought I had this but can’t find it) is the 1993 LD commentary. Does anybody have this? And ideally, I’d love it if someone would be willing to make me one like I always made for the other movies - with the silences filled with the '93 stereo mix.

Harmy, the LD commentary is in my LD Audio archive on myspleen. It’s in lossless form there. I have it posted as a LCR wav file with the 1993 Audio mix in the Left and Right channels ducked during the talking portions, and the commentary in the Center channel. You can get that from myspleen or I can send you an ac3.

Ideas on ripping iTunes Extras
Time

As far as I’m aware this has not yet been achieved. The best you can do is capture the video through some means.

In capping the digital extras for Star Wars, I used a Blackmagic DeckLink mini recorder to capture the hdmi output of a secondary monitor running iTunes. The problems come when your video frame rates don’t match the specs of your hardware exactly. For instance, my graphics card only outputs 30.000fps or 24.000fps at 1080p, but the extras were encoded as either 29.970fps or 23.976fps. The graphics card will automatically duplicate 1 frame in ~1000 to maintain 30fps or 24fps, but there was no particular pattern to it, which meant I had to do some semi-automated things to search for and remove duplicate frames.

Also, I couldn’t us an Apple TV because the Decklink doesn’t support 59.94/60 fps video at 1080p.

Info Wanted: Averaging the various versions of the 2004 master?
Time

I’d actually be pretty interested to hear your results of using a median script on these various sources. I do think it runs the risk of basically selecting pixels from the same source all the time, due to slight color differences between the sources. That might be ok, if you rig it so the best source is likely to have the median pixel values, except in the case of encoding error, etc.

On another note, did you happen to see any other HDTV rips of Episode I? The Blu Rays of TPM and AOTC are so different as to make them unusable for this process, and you need three sources to do a median. I have the Premiere, SKY and Cinemax sources for AOTC, but only the first two for TPM.

Also, I know it’s somewhere else, but could you post your motion compensation script? I’d like to see how it works with these.
