I was watching/listening to the TFA commentary on Disney Movies Anywhere last night, and noticed that there was an extended silence while J.J. was in the middle of talking about the costumes designed by Michael Kaplan, during the “Correllian Standoff” scene. However I had accidentally left the closed captions on in the app. Weirdly, there were captions for his commentary at that point but no audio. Here’s what they say:

I wonder why the audio is missing. Was it an accident or a last minute edit? The subtitles are not present on the Blu Ray.

One other small correction, all of the BD-only scenes for Episodes 1 - 6 are now available on DMA and iTunes as part of the Digital Movie Collection. I don’t think the other streaming options ever updated the content though.

Well, I could definitely use another source for the 2001 version of TPM, if it happens to be that version.

I’m just curious how your script combines the two sources. I have similar problems with my 2004 Saga project. Is it an average of the two, or some sort of weighted average. Are you processing before you merge them?

Are you sure this sequence was 1.44:1 in the IMAX version in the theater? I thought it looked more like 16:9 when I saw it. I don’t remember the height difference being so drastic.

That’s the transport stream from the Starz broadcast. I recorded it to get just the Imax sequence. It might be a future project but sadly the broadcast is highly compressed, so hopefully someone has a better source.

That Youtube video compares the DVD and the BD; we know from the absence of the wipe that the DVD is not the theatrical. Just wondering if the workprint has the clone voices and the Wookiee hut rust?

No, those are BD additions. Audio shouldn’t be a problem as I have the Theatrical DTS mix prepped already for this. The '05 DVD didn’t have any noticeable changes either, iirc.

Edit/Update: There was a little more to the adjustments than I initially thought. ANH needed two lines removed, one altered, and the “He’s on your tail” line added. I had to basically google translate that line, but I compared with an earlier line of “You’ve got one on your tail.” to make sure the translations were fairly close, as those lines are not necessarily directly/literally translated in other languages.

For ESB, I was able to use Project Threepio to get translations of the original Emperor scene for most languages, but a couple had to be reconstructed from the '04 version. It wasn’t that hard since most of the lines are identical. I just needed to google translate the line “Yes, my master.” which, again is very similar to an earlier line: “What is thy bidding, my master.” I really just needed to translate the word “Yes”.

I’m still working on ROTJ, as I have no video reference for the burnt in Jabba subs, I’m going to base their timings on the Despecialized timings so that I can make sure the foreign subs don’t overlap and become illegible. Jedi’s subs were the easiest to conform as they just required the removal of Darth Vader’s “No’s” before saving Luke and the “Weesa Free!” gungan line at the end of the film.

Nearly done now, but I’m still looking for Castillian Spanish and if possible Slovakian (or anything else, really, if possible!).

1. Speculation/Details about Black R2-D2 (It’s not black because of the blue-screen process, they actually used a black-painted R2 to specifically avoid problems with the blue-screen process), 2. Laserdiscs aren’t acutally glass, can’t remember anything else right now.

Just to clarify though, everything in there this is fascinating to hear about. Details about the transfer equipment, politics of the releases, etc. Thanks again for posting.

I can vouch for the fact that the older TSmuxers are better for this purpose. I’ve had success with v1.12.

I’m not planning on re-translating anything or resyncing from GOUT really at all. I’ve got nearly two dozen languages that are synced to the Blu Rays already and need only very minor adjustments (a single added line in ANH, a single deleted line in ROTJ, and the Emperor scene from TESB, which I will use Project Threepio to patch.) I’d just like to include Castillian Spanish if possible. I would think that the Western European Blu Ray release should have Castillian Spanish subs, but I don’t know for sure. Again, any help would be welcomed. 😃

That’s true. LexX, if you’re fluent enough to do the conversion from the Castellano tracks in Project Threepio, that would be appreciated. 😃

Look for my HD versions of the 2001-2005 titles on myspleen, assuming, of course, you get access to those DVDs. They’re 1080p.

Hello, I’m working on the subs for these releases and I’m wondering if anyone has access to Castillian Spanish subs for the SE. The US Blu Rays only have the Latin-Spanish subs and I’d like to include both.

It will be impossible to “remove” the score. You can probably get pretty good dialogue from the center channel on the blu ray’s audio, but sound effects are another story.

Subtitles I have to work with at this point from retail DVDs: English (SDH), German, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish. If anyone has access to a region 2 disc with some of the other major languages, it would be very helpful. 😃. Thanks!

Meanwhile, I have fixed the visual glitches in the “What Mission?” 3P0 shot in the desert - (it was just as I suspected).

With that in mind, are there any other major visual glitches that will require a re-encode? Speak now or forever hold your peace. Actually I’ll give you until tomorrow morning as I’m sure not everybody is reading this post right now this second.

It will take a day or two to fully re-encode the whole movie and rebuild the disc, so if there is anything else that needs fixing, now is the time to speak up!

Well, the audio glitch is not in the version I’ve posted to MySpleen in the LD audio archive. Let me know if you need another copy of the '77 stereo mix.

Edit: But there is something odd there on the untouched LD audio. The audio switches polarity at that point. I had patched that spot from one of the Analog discs for the finalized track in the LD audio archive.

That could be helpful. It’s worth a shot. I think I would definitely have to motion compensate to make sure they line up well.

I have noticed some issues with the menus. When I first played the disc, I played the 1982 trailer, then went back to to the main (disc) menu from the polio menu. I then tried to play the main film, but the disc started playing the trailer again.

Also, I’m wondering if you could comment on your 1981 crawl. Is it a reconstruction, or just a cleaned up version of what was released before? I’m asking, mainly because of how static the star field, moons and planets seem. The matte painting of Tattooine seems to have completely static grain.

I agree, I don’t even consider them that important either, lol. I’m just in too deep now!!

Updates: I’ve not had tons of time to work lately, as I was in the process of moving, and finishing up some things for work.

I have been able to spend a few days earlier this month working on a method for combining the different sources. I have been using the median of three method to combine them. Unfortunately it has not worked to fully eliminate all of the problems with the German Premiere source. Basically, it’s able to remove encoding errors, but leaves some trace artifacts. Also, it tends to smooth out fine detail in the picture. The good news is that the median script, in general provides a better secondary source than either the SkyTV or Cinemax raw captures, and should be the main source for replacement frames in the final version. To some extent, I’ll be able to use the Blu Rays as a source as well, when necessary. This would mainly be limited to the title crawls and any subtitling. The main exceptions to this will be AOTC, where the colors of the Blu-Ray are significantly different and would require regrading, and TPM, where the Blu-Ray comes from a different video master.

To the extent that the median of three different captures is a way to automatically remove any of the most egregious errors, it relies on having three different captures derived from the same master. Unfortunately, at this point, I’ve not located a third different capture of Phantom Menace. I just have the German Premiere and the UK SkyTV versions. Those two are the two best, but a third is necessary to use the script. If it were any of the other films, I could just use the Blu Ray, but as I mentioned above, the TPM Blu Ray is derived from a different master. So, TPM will be the most challenging to fix, from the perspective of not having a third capture, however it doesn’t have the number of encoding issues that, for instance AOTC and ROTJ possess. Also, the UK source matches extremely well with the German source, and probably won’t require much work to match the color, detail, etc.

Anyway, Unfortunately the median method doesn’t represent a silver-bullet type fix for the 2004 HDTV masters, but does help fix some of its issues. Finishing the process is nearly a frame by frame process to look for the encoding issues, and I’m almost a the point of starting over again from scratch to get them where they need to be. It’s definitely a balance when doing this, as the German Source has tons of intermitant blocking in the darkest parts of the picture, or just broken frames. If you look frame by frame you will many times see a blocking issue every 50-100 frames that takes 3-5 more frames to clear up. It’s not always especially noticeable when watching at full speed, but many times is. I’m trying to figure out the right balance for when to replace frames, and when to just ignore the blocking. This just means that the process of getting this done will be very tedious and will take time.

Right now, I’m working on AOTC, as I think it has the most issues and will be the right place to perfect the techniques before moving on the other films.
