Hmm.. what would happen if you downmixed the 2.1 to 2.0? Would that make any sense?? Integrating the lfe in the mix.

Or try lowering the max bitrate instead of the avg bitrate.
This has been noted in a few other threads, but I think it kinda belongs here also.
Recently in a.b.sw...
Audio for GOUT projects (NTSC)
Star Wars - 1977 restored mono mix (lossless)
Star Wars - 1977 35mm Dolby Stereo Mix (reference level) (lossless)
SW, ESB, ROTJ - Belbucus' '93 LaserDisc PCM rips synced to GOUT (lossless)
SW, ESB, ROTJ - 1993 5.1 upmix (ac3&dts) - from the 93 laserdisc PCM's, edited by hairy_hen & with his custom LFE
In all about 11GB worth.
dark_jedi said:Thanks just about have them now,so what would you set these at in Soft Encode?
I assume 448 DD 2.0 Surround, but what would you set for the DialNorm?
I have a feeling Belbucus already put them at the right volume, so 31 I believe. But I'm not too knowledgeable in the area.
done
You could try something like
assumetff()
telecide(guide=1, back=1)
decimate()
This usually goes before any filtering/resizing (except perhaps derainbow).
If that doesn't work, try posting an unresized clip.
The fullscreen '97 SE VCDs-on-DVD are still in a.b.sw if that's any use.
Belbucus did GOUT-synced PCM tracks from the '93 DC LDs (lol that's a lot of acronyms).
They were what hairy_hen used as a base for his versions, he just made a couple of small edits.
I guess I could put them in a.b.sw also if needed.
Sure, the standard method
Telecide()
Decimate(5)
can fail (if that's what you meant). But there are lots of settings... On a particular troublesome video I had to use this for example:
Telecide(guide=1, back=1, gthresh=50, vthresh=30)
Decimate(mode=2)
Haven't specifically tried to IVTC sw though.

yes that does sound like a lot of work,I use avisynth, but I will figure something out,I was curious if the pattern changes from LD side to LD side,or if it actually changes throughout the same side?
I've used telecide many times now and it hasn't failed me yet, even on extremely noisy and messed up video. Just gotta tweak it for the particular source...
The 5.1 upmixes will be in a.b.sw shortly.
Also, the anh restored mono mix & theatrical stereo was upped there as well.
Just bear in mind h_h made a few edits in his versions, to go with his lfe, so it's not exactly the same mix, for that you need Belbucus' pcms.
Dr. M, your posts are confusing me, are you talking to me about the upmix clips or hairy_hen about his lfe?
Where do you get this about boosting the lower frequencies? Is the lfe at too high a volume??
The point about creating a 5.1 ac3/dts is that you can't use the dpl2 on your receiver on a 2.1 (93 dpl+h_h lfe) track, since it will override the lfe... And of course everyone are free to do their own upmix if they want/can.
Doctor M said:The best way to do make an LFE track would probably be to strip the LFE track from the official 5.1 mix and sync it to the mix you'd like to use.
And that is actually what hairy_hen has done I believe. It is a proper lfe track.
For the comparisons I simply included also a derived lfe to put to to the test.
..
Ok, the methods were 1=active matrix, 2=farina, 3=V.I and the b's were with h_h's lfe... So pretty much what I expected :)
I can make these pretty quickly, 448kbps ac3 ok or is there need for a dts in 768 and/or 1536 kbps?
Hopefully this will work...
As promised, here are some samples for SW.
It's a 3 min. clip upmixed using three different methods, with both derived lfe and h_h's lfe. Encoded in aften 448kbps default settings.
Anyone interested please give it a listen and report back what you like..
Hopefully I didn't make any silly mistakes with the channels etc. :)
IN NO ORDER the methods used are: Farina/soxfilter; V.I default settings/movie mode; active matrix dpl2.
I'll tell what method is what when I get some feedback. :)
To remove unwanted sound/music between words (on the ripped-out center channel of the mix) you could use a gate, such as these free ones.
There is currently no known way to remove sounds under the speech without artifacts, but you could experiment with something such as this or this.
Noise/hum etc. removal plugins are also useful sometimes.
As I indicated in an earlier post I can do several types of upmixes, but currently lack the hardware to test them out.. I'm willing to post some samples if there are some who are interested in giving it a listen and giving some feedback, then I could post 5.1 ac3 and dts upmixes for all 3 movies.
There might be minor differences in the upmix algorithms so I'd like for someone to select the 'best' one, instead of just choosing one arbitrarily.

It would be nice if we could create the 'best' (subjective, I know) faux 5.1 (or 6.1 etc.) upmix of the '93 pcms (with hairy_hen's lfe). Resulting in a high bitrate ac3 and/or dts.
I'd do it myself, but I don't have a surround setup at the moment, and won't have one for a while. Is there anyone with a nice receiver/setup (and ears ;) ) who'd like to work on this? Maybe yourself, h_h? I'm willing to help in any aspect that I can.
Does anyone know for a fact how the 2.0 '93 mix is encoded? Is it plain stereo or matrixed surround such as prologic or prologic 2?
On another note, hairy_hen you mentioned to me a glitch you found in the pcms (or one of them), did you manage to fix it and did you find any more?
A quick look and apparently what anh and esb has that the other movies lack is.. MORE COCKPIT! ;)
Haha, yeah in the version of the esb script I used, the snowspeeders are 'rouge squadron'...
Dunno if it's an error in the actual script or just this one.
Also I removed the CHARACTER: bits (and INTERIOR/EXTERIOR) when they have lines, like LUKE:, HAN: etc., so the names are just from the descriptions or when that name is mentioned in dialogue.
Edit: Added prequel clouds in the first post.
Just a bit of fun with the Star Wars scripts and wordle.net.
Edit: And the prequels also...
Ewoks, sir! Faahsands of 'em!
okay...
zoom in on your timeline (bottom left in the timeline window or +/-)
select the razor tool (c)
cut around the frame you want
back to selection tool (v)
and either
copy/paste the amount of frames you want to duplicate
or
rightclick the frame, select frame hold..., check 'hold on', click ok, and expand the frame(clip) (drag from the right side for how long you want), it should hold the frame
