The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

Yeah, George insisting in the AOTC commentary that everything around Sifo-Dyas (and Kamino being missing in the archives) is going to be explained in the next movie is quite funny in retrospect, since it would actually be 12 years before it was addressed at all, by something Lucas was involved in at least. Something something nO pLaN.

I kind of feel it’d’ve been better if he’d just left it as Sido-Dyas to keep the plot of the prequel trilogy more self-contained. That’s something you could definitely do in a fanedit with a little audio tweaking, or by dubbing and subtitling the Kaminoans, if you weren’t concerned with maintaining continuity with TCW.

I swear I’ll stop after this post but Testing is a master-level troll and I feel compelled to address this:

She’d want them to suffer

Does Rey at any point seem like the sort of person who’d want people who’ve wronged her to suffer and be murdered? She forgives, heals and sort-of-falls-in-love-with the guy who stabbed Han (a kind of short-lived surrogate parent figure) in front of her. Such a lust for revenge. /s There’s hating your neglectful parents and then there’s actively cheering on their deaths, you know.

I think Rey can still want revenge against Palpatine without her parents needing to be noble. Firstly, they were still her parents, and despite the level of abuse/neglect implied by literally selling her into slavery, she’d still probably be opposed to them being murdered, especially since she doesn’t remember them well enough to harbour any personal grudge. Secondly, he’s Palpatine: he’s responsible for a huge amount of death, for turning Ben and starting the First Order (and thus getting Han, Luke and Leia killed), and is actively trying to kill the rest of her friends. Difficult guy to not want some kind of revenge on.

My ideal Rey Palpatine version of this movie keeps her parents as bad people and tries to shift more of the plot onto her worrying about being evil because of using the Dark Side all the time and being tempted to join with Kylo Ren, rather than some kind of genetic determinism. But that’s a looooot of very fiddling dialogue reworking. There’s a lot of tough points, like “why would Rey’s parents not give up her location to Ochi if they were drunks who sold her and not lovely self-sacrificing heroes”, and what to do with Luke going on about “Because you’re a Palpatine!” on Ahch-To, etc.

It’s called retrospect. It’s like how something seems strange at first and the movie isn’t complete yet and you’re hoping for it to make sense by the end of it, but a later moment retroactively makes it better.

Yes, that’s what I meant when I mentioned it, Testing. Thank you for your input.

What is Kylo trying to achieve in the tug of war, anyway? Presumably he’d like the troop carrier to be able to fly off. Despite this, he appears to be also trying to pull it towards the ground, like Rey is, just in a different direction. I suppose the whole ‘trying to push Rey’ thing covers it - but that explanation comes later in the movie, so in the actual moment it just seems strange.

I always interpreted it as Kylo being blinded by his emotions, almost like a little kid - Rey wants the transport, so Kylo doesn’t want her to have it.

Yeah, I suppose that works. Kylo generally strikes me as a bit less madly angry in TROS than he was in the last two movies, but he does still choke that guy and behead Boolio etc. so clearly the blinding temper is still there below the immediate surface.

@Sparky Ah, yes, suggestions for helping achieve OP’s intention while also making sure he knows what he’s already changing is inherently wrong.

You’re arguing against the fundamental ideas of OP’s fanedit. 9 times out of 10, or probably more, you just disagree with the fanedit on a conceptual level. That’s fine. The fanedit is just not for you. OP understands what he’s changing fine. You often act like you have the supreme understanding of the ST, but you’re just one person with one particular subjective interpretation of these movies.

The best thing that could possibly happen (from your perspective) is you end up hijacking their creative project. In all likelihood, you’re just gonna end up arguing for the sake of arguing.

If you truly want to give suggestions for helping OP achieve their intention, give constructive criticism on the execution of their ideas. You often give destructive criticism of their creative purpose.

I’m probably contributing to the problem by feeding it and adding more off-topic comments to this post, though.

 1. That’s the point! You guys defend the ST all the time. Why can’t I?

 2. The edits I addressed remove some of the best things about TLJ, make them less meaningful, take away oomph and pointlessly add stuff that was cut out for a reason.

About half the time I see a new fanedit pop up on the forum, I read the changelog and think “What? That’s stupid. They’ve completely missed the point of the film.” - the trick is to then resist the urge to tell them that and set the world to rights. I admit occasionally I’ll write a paragraph on reddit or whatever to convey my ideas about something, but it doesn’t really matter; no one is going to massively change their opinions on a movie because someone on the internet told them their interpretation was wrong. I’ve long accepted that I’m more sympathetic to the sequels than 75% of the internet, and it seems to me like you’re probably more sympathetic to them than 99% of the internet. I imagine opinions will shift more positive in the next two decades, like they did with the prequels.

I suppose it’s possibly easier for me to say this because I don’t rely entirely on others to produce fanedits for me, so I know I can just crib ideas I like from other people for my own versions while not using those which don’t appeal to me, but I think it’s still probably best to just shake your head and move on when you see someone suggest something you think is daft. Most faneditors are looking primarily for feedback/advice/help with executing their ideas, and not so much to just be told that all the changes they want to make are invalid.

I’ve always enjoyed how much more talky TLJ is than the other two so I’m not sure the dialogue trimming is for me, but some of your more structural and visual changes seem very neat - the movie’s tendency to do a Marvel and put unnecessary humour in otherwise sincere moments is somewhat irritating - so I’d really appreciate a link when it’s done.

If Maz sent them to find DJ and then DJ betrays them, doesn’t that reflect somewhat poorly on Maz? Not that it matters in this film.

Deepfake Ideas - Index and Discussion

I have tried to deepfake fake Wedge in the ANH briefing scene before at Tobar’s suggestion, but never got a very good result from it. I’ll give it another shot when I one day get a new GPU (assuming the prices ever drop to reasonable levels again…) and can experiment with some of the newer model architectures in DeepFaceLab.

Dom's (Possibly) Useful TROS Edit (WIP)

There’s no evidence that Leia’s “always” was originally there in the movie, is there? Trailer audio is usually different, with lines chopped and spliced and moved around to different contexts (like “final word in the story of Skywalker”, or “No one does - but I do.”, which are also more effective IMO than the movie lines they were put together from) and often has different sound effects mixed in for impact.

Is there a fan edit that removes 3rd flashback from The Last Jedi? (Luke-Ben scene)
Time

But that’s the ‘real’ version of what happened. It’s kind of a key resolution to that plot element. Though if you delete it, leaving only the two less accurate recollections, I suppose that would add an interesting amount of additional ambiguity.

I have seen a tweak to it here (I don’t recall who by, sorry) where it was adjusted to have Luke explicitly turn his saber off before Ben struck at him, making it clearer that Luke wasn’t going to attack him, which might be the sort of thing you’re looking for.

It’s getting a bit late on my end, but I’ll send the lines and video to Speaking of AI tomorrow. If anyone has anymore lines they’d like to submit, let me know.

I’ve “re-written” the first scene with Kylo and Palps. Some of the new dialogue could be accomplished with AI.

(Yes, this also requires changing any mentions of the Final Order into the Sith Eternal.)

How exactly can this be accomplished? Both with Palpatine’s voice and having new dialogue for Kylo Ren where you see him speak the lines.

What exactly is wrong with AI-ing new voice clips for Palps?

No one has a fully trained Palpatine voice AI model, as far as I know. It would also be quite hard to make one, I think, even for a skilled voice synthesis expert like Speaking of AI.

We’re lucky with Kylo: Adam Driver has done plenty of movies, TV episodes and interviews, and Speaking has already used that material to train a vocal model for him that they use in their YouTube videos. Outside of Kylo’s dramatic outbursts, Driver tends to use his normal voice and a restrained delivery for the role, so hopefully the deadpan output we’ll get from an AI will match reasonably well.

TROS Palpatine on the other hand is very much not a restrained delivery of Ian McDiarmid’s normal voice. There’s only a limited amount of dialogue in the film to train from, but even if you were to widen the focus to a general Ian McDiarmid model and just hope you could pitch shift it and add some reverb to match it in, I think it’d still be way too deadpan to fit McDiarmid’s iconically theatrical portrayal of Palaptine.

Yeah, as HAL says, the issue is the footage. There’s no close-up footage of Palpatine saying “You’re nothing” like there is for the other two lines, which makes it very difficult to put last, because in order to cut to Rey for the end of the dialogue sequence we need to be cutting from somewhere else, and that somewhere else essentially has to be a closeup of Palpatine’s face. That’s why when I tried it in my mockup, I had to put the “you are nothing” line over the top of that footage of Rey - you can’t put it over the other Palpatine closeups, because the lipsync would be severely wrong, and you can’t use the wide shot it was originally over because that doesn’t lead into Rey recoiling from lightning correctly, etc.

Music can also be an issue: making the sequence significantly shorter means hiding a trim to the music somewhere (not super straightforward with the iconic Emperor motif), and even rearranging shots means harming how well that music syncs up to the action - assuming you can even manage to separate the music out from the sound effects in the first place (though this isn’t a total deal breaker if you’re willing to really go deep with reconstructing the sound mix and rescoring).

I think this thread has something of tendency to focus too much on the written text of a scene without checking the movie for whether it’s feasible. I’ve seen people (and not just Testing) repeatedly suggest materialising fairly complex new lines entirely out of thin air, even. You don’t need to actually be able to edit to ‘test’ your idea, you can just load up the movie, take stock of what shot coverage you’ve got and see in your mind if you could theoretically put it together or not. Many a good fanediting idea dies at the stage of realising you just haven’t got the right footage to pull it off.

Neerb said:

To be fair, Sade also said in that same conversation that “I am a Jedi” wouldn’t feel climactic and that it probably couldn’t work believably.

To clarify, I was splitting the hairs between the somewhat trepidatiously-delivered “I’m… I’m a Jedi.” (which is what my mockups had) and the theoretical grand, defiant “I am a Jedi!” which I got the impression a lot of people were imagining. Achieving the latter line delivery would require a total replacement of the line using clips from elsewhere, as far as I can see. I do very much think “I’m a Jedi”, either my implementation of it or Sherlock’s, does work far better than “I am all the Jedi” ever did.

I was never 100% happy with my execution of that audio edit, but we’re all very critical of ourselves, especially when we’ve listened to the same audio clip hundreds of times. I mean, I still intend to use my version of that change in my own TROS fanedit; I didn’t mean to suggest it was unusable or anything.

Yeah, I think any longer lines would seem odd. While “I’ll always be with you!” is a nice sentiment in the novel, it’d seem super, super shoehorned-in in the movie, especially since Rey doesn’t have any kind of facial reaction we could use for that. His ghost appearing shows us the same thing in a much smoother way.

My vote would be for stuff like “Rey!” or similar when they meet up. Then again, she does already know he’s there because she sent the lightsaber to him, so perhaps a “Thanks.”/“Thank you.” (both thanks for the saber teleport, and thanks for healing him and reminding him he’s not doomed to be evil) would work. It’d have to fit with the cheeky, Han Solo-esque body language that Adam Driver adopts once Ben gets his mojo back, so I’d personally lean into swashbuckling and glad to be there to help, rather than going too moody.

While I like the idea of better communicating to the audience that Ben is making a conscious decision to sacrifice himself to save Rey after he crawls out of the pit (as opposed to his death seeming like a surprise in the theatrical), I’m not sure any additional dialogue wouldn’t feel out of place in that scene. It’d have to be something very finely honed and thought through (so not NO, NO, NOOOO!).

TheDoctor30's Revenge of the Sith - Extended Edition Fan-Edit (featuring RoTS, The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch) (Released)
Time

Very cool. There’s so many of these mashups, but I quite like collecting them because everyone does the structure and transitions and key overlap moments (like Anakin’s downfall) slightly differently. Including Bad Batch footage is also pretty novel (mostly because the show is so recent). I’m interested to see how well you’ve got that working in the overall structure, since it does strike me as being a bit of a non-sequitur to suddenly be introduced to those characters.

5.1 audio, Blu-ray quality and subtitles are a level of polish rare to see in these mashups; only stuff like HAL’s edits tends to be so nicely finished. Ditto for the credits - that’s going above and beyond.

One way I’ve seen Changes to the Constitution shoehorned in before is to stick the key dialogue over the establishing shot of the senate offices, leading up to the scene proper. I think Dominic Cobb did that first.

Need someone to voice a line to finish my TLJ edit...
Time

Neat idea. TLJ’s constant inclination towards unnecessary humour has always been my least favourite part of a movie I otherwise like a lot, so this strikes me as a solid change to keep the tone more sincere. I’m afraid I don’t have good enough audio equipment to help you out here but hopefully someone will. There’s quite a few redubbed lines in HAL’s TROS Ascendant edit from users here. I’d certainly be interested in a PM when you’re done.

Edit: as Faraday says though, perhaps tweak the exact crime so it doesn’t suggest that Canto Bight is under First Order control, because that confuses the idea that they’re an exploitative third party.

Do they have two different R7 droids with distinct paint jobs?

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread

Is it possible to cut every single mention of the “Final Order” in favour of it just being called the fleet/the Sith fleet/Palpatine’s fleet or whatever? The whole First Order + Sith Eternal = Final Order thing just seems unnecessarily complex (especially since the movie never mentions the Sith Eternal by name, nor does it particularly illuminate where all those people dressed in red came from at all)… and more importantly, every time I hear the words ‘Final Order’, my brain begins to vibrate. I normally love that kind of campy cheese, but in a movie already struggling so much to come across as sincere rather than ridiculous, it really doesn’t help.
