Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

I wouldn't worry too much about the green thing, it seems very minor and I think I have seen it before in other GOUT sourced projects.

I have only tested this on my PC as well, and didn't notice any audio popping but I was only listening with headphones, not an av receiver.

I retract my comment about the compression earlier with mkv, seems my software player on my PC had some additional processing going on, which I have since disabled and now seems fine.

dark_jedi is the video bitrate higher on the x264 codec for the MKV compared to the DVD?

GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time

Been thinking of trying G-Force's script for a while. Tried it once before, which was unsuccessful, mostly due to problems with my computer. I am hoping if I can get a six core AMD cpu or old skt 1366 i7 cpu on the cheap, then I should be good to go. Hopefully I can add as many audio options and tweaks to them as possible and have my own ultimate customised version. Would be a nice little fun project to do for oneself.:-P

Out of curiousity what is the average processing time for this script on a quadcore computer?

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I voted, but I doubt Lucas/Lucasfilm/Fox will care about such polls. It would be nice if like someone said and it was on starwars.com then if there was a considerable percentage for the originals maybe it would get noticed? But again they probably don't care for such polls. Ignorance is bliss I guess. :-(

The question I had was in regards to a line of Vader's that was changed in the SE from something like, "Bring my shuttle," to "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival." I never heard the former, but I love the latter and the shot of the walk to the shuttle. I understand this is a great issue of contention with purists due to both the tone and disruption of the scene's flow. I understand it's a stupid excuse to explain how Vader gets back to the Executor.

My question is, could someone find a clip of the original line and post it here or PM it to me, if possible? I can't find it anywhere online, so if you could perhaps upload it to YouTube, that would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Bring my shuttle!

For comparison's sake - Alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival.

Not a fan of the new line.  Vader's supposed to be furious at losing Luke, and he sounds furious in the original line.  He doesn't even sound mildly annoyed in the new one.

Also, if you haven't seen the pre-Special Edition (1977, 1980, 1983) versions of the original trilogy, I strongly advise you to.  They're available in 4:3 letterbox form in the individually-sold 2-disc "Limited Edition" DVDs (on disc 2), or on the 6-disc Original Trilogy box set (also disc 2 of each movie).

For higher quality, there are fan-made preservations and enhancement of the aforementioned DVDs available on line.  In particular, Dark_Jedi's GOUT V3 will be released soon, which promises to be the best version available of the films in their original form.

And welcome to the forum!

Is it wrong that I find the new line both horribly amusing and entertaining?  It must be the tone... It's gotta be the tone!

But like I said, while these screenshots look nice, these versions (and specifically GKAR Jedi) are totally f'ed up by DVNR. I'd post some screenshots but I'm too lazy right now, maybe later.

Really?! Aww that's a shame. Perhaps for ROTJ it will require a combination of more GOUT/04SE/another source. Does anyone know how the ESB fairs in comparison to ROTJ, 97SE broadcast wise?

I don't know what it is with ROTJ... seems to be great difficulty in finding a decent version to watch that doesn't have colour/picture smearing problems LOL (frustrating) in terms of watching the original version(except yours of course Harmy ;-p)

Cheers for the superfast responce Lee, though I sorted it. Archive test reports all is ok, just waiting now for my DL disks to arrive in post used the last one on Empire.

I was never too big on the SE but these are so much better than my wide screen VHS versions that I have found a new fondness of the '97 SE. It brings back the happy memory of seeing the trilogy on the big screen again 13 years ago.  Man where did that time go!

Yeah, I think it's amazing to finally see them in decent quality after VHS. Although I grew up watching the originals first, I also grew up with the 1997 SE, and it certainly does bring back fond memories seeing them again.

Lee has done a great job of preserving them.

I think what we would need is a hybrid version of all the best parts taken from the best sources to achieve what needs to be done getting it to look as close to the original as possible. So we could have a mixture of GOUT/04SE/97SE for particular parts but not too much that it becomes jarring between sources. As we know, that working from one source has its limitations, and in this case the GOUT source doesn't have all the colour information in parts that would be needed to recolour time it.

I've been thinking about hybridizing DJ's GOUT V3 and 97 SE V2 sets.  That way, you don't have the immensely drastic difference in quality you get when combining the GOUT and the 04 DVD, but you still get better-than-GOUT quality for most of the movie.

This is not an "I'm definitely going to do this" thing, I'm just thinking about it.  I would also do a full color pass at least scene by scene, if not shot by shot (depends on how much time I want to sink into working on this).

Oh, and csd79 & Adywan, your color tweaks both look absolutely amazing.  That's how I want Star Wars to look, man ... fucking GL ...

That's sounds great. I think though, the more people behind it the better really. Since seems like a lot of work for one person, but if you are up for it then I am all for it.

I think there is real potential with the sources we have. I certainly think that using some of interior death star scenes could be recolour timed using the 97SE source moreso than the GOUT, due to their being more to work with. I also liked Harmy's approach of the GOUT/04 hybrid for the landspeeder. There is just so much there, that I think it would be real waste to focus on the GOUT only and not take advantage of other sources.

I don't know what other people's thoughts are on this, but I think this could work.

Yeah I agree about the 97SE smearing, that's why I think it should only be parts or selected scenes. The Flunk one is better in a lot more places than the Reivax I would say, after comparing them both, but there is a minor problems with the Flunk too. I think the best from both would be a better compromise.

Not sure what d_j's 97SE broadcasts look like, but from what I have seen from the small sample clips and screenshots it looked more detailed than the 97SE laserdiscs ever did, but again I hear it has its own problems too.

Has anyone actually thought of recolour timing the 1997 SE versions ? They don't seem to suffer the crushed blacks as the 2004 SE, and the Flunk/Reivax and other broadcast sources seem pretty good quality wise to work with. If we could change the colour timing of those and then convert them to the theatrical versions (like Harmy has shown) we could be almost there.

Not saying this is the perfect solution (far from it) but certainly there would be more colour and detail to work with over some of the GOUT sources.
