Visual Basic Programming

Hmn. Good question. I belive you would need a lower level programmed API, perhaps C? This would require a direct OS call, I belive, and VB6 is good for making cute little forms filled with textbox1, textbox2, and such. Now, if you dig deep, you might find some library with such system call to do it, but I don't know, I never needed such a thing. If I ever needed the computer to restart, I'd show a message asking for the user to do so, and never do it on my own. Never surprise the user, specially if it's a bad surprise like suddenly booting.

Bonus points: make a library on assembly. Why, x86 programming is lots of fun!

EDIT: Ahh ok sorry, I belive I didn't read it fully. But... a login script on VB6? When will it show up? How are you going to start the process?

It's kinda hard to know that, since most people now are aware of the Vader - Luke thing, even those who have not seen the film. I guess it could be guessed that Vader is Luke's father from the new dialogue, yes...

Good Simple Engine to make 3D Fighting Games
Time
Well, Chaltab, I think he wants something more low-level than that.

I say that making a 2D fighting game is easier than a 3D one, but if you wanna go for the 3D... The thing is, I belive most 3D figthing engines are owned by softwarehouses and not open to the public, I could be wrong though. First, have you ever considered using something like Valve's Source? There is a fighting game made on that, even though it is a shooter engine (hell, I've seen a rally game made with the Quake engine!).

If you really aren't into developing something so complex, you could find those customizable kits for fightiing games. I've seen a couple of those for 2D fighting games, Chaltab has mentioned a 3D one, but I don't think those are really that good...

I belive Ian McDiarmid as the emperor is somewhat superior to Clive Revil's, BUT... I disagree with messing up with the film for all the reasons we have discussed before, so, I was always against having him there. I still remember seeing the screenshot of Ian McDiarmid as the emperor in ESB on AICN (along with Hayden on ROTJ), and thinking "Now this has GOT to be fake"!

What I enjoyed about Ian McDiarmid in ROTJ is how young he was playing that part, and thanks to his acting and voice (and make-up) he looked like a fragile old man (well, sort of). Kinda like Max von Sydow in The Exorcist, you know? It's like "he was HOW old?!" Also, when the prequels came up he was the right age to play Palpatine, so it sort of worked out well.

Was that really the first Death Star in ROTS?

As it was said earlier on of the other post, Lucas specifically states in the ROTS commentary with a chuckle, that he was aware it took the death star 20 years to build, but he said they had union problems and stuff like that.

I always wish that in ROTS they would have shown 2 death stars being built. So it would make it seem that maybe after 5-10 years, they decided on just finishing one to get in up and working, which would leave it plausable for them after the first was blown up to continue on an already built second one.

Now, I just wacthed episode 3 with the comentaries on, and I don't belive I heard that, but maybe I got distracted for a while. I'll watch it again later.

Now, I don't belive they would build 2 Death Stars 3 or 4 years after each other, because what is the point? Had they destroyed the rebel base at the battle of Yavin, would there really be the need of a second Death Star? It would almost never be used, as it's main porpouse was to spread fear of such weapon, not actually go around blowing up planets.

I have several CDs that got their package damaged or marked because of those stupid safety packages some stores have in. Now I've learned my lesson, whenever I buy any DVD from a place that has any of those insane packagings, I ask for the cashier to open it up for me. So if he screws up, it's the store's fault and I'll get a new one.

Video Games - a general discussion thread

Also, I can't believe it's coming out on Thanksgiving in Brazil. I mean I know Thanksgiving is an American thing, but still. Why then?

It takes a while for any movie or game to reach other markets, unless they work in a way that it gets released overseas at the same time (like Episode 3). Also, it will be produced outside Brazil, so it takes a while for it to get here anyway. Oh well.

The thanksgiving date, just a coincidence. We don't have that here.

I belive we can play each other, we just have to give each other our own code. Do you have an instant messaging like msn or icq? Or even an irc program... So we can schedule a date and a time, get in, give each others code or whatever, and find each other on it. I'll most probably lose, I'm not such a good gamer, but it'll be fun to actually play a game with you.

constructed. The ability to destroy
a planet is insignificant next to
the power of the Force.

By the sounds of it, Motti had it constructed, and he looked about 30-something years old in ANH by my estimation.

Which adds up to my theory that that particular scene happened some years after the events of ROTS, maybe 10 years before ANH (and that's why I asked for those planning on doing edits to have that scene being the last of the movie)

Here's why I belive that scene happened much later:

1- We can see imperial officers in full uniform. Now, I don't belive Palpatine had uniforms in boxes just waiting for his plans to succeed. Also, since we never see anyone on the prequels dressed up as an imperial officer up to that point, I think we may asume that those uniforms didn't exist by then.

2- Tarkin is by Palpatine's side, and he was not in the films until that point. It would take time before he could make to a Grand Moff. Those more familiar with the EU can elaborate on that.

3- And there's the whole debate on how fast it would take to build a Death Star. So we are led to belive it takes 20 years to build the first one, and 4 years to build a second one? Talk about learning from experience... Of course one could elaborate and say that the second Death Star was being constructed way before the events of ANH, but I don't belive it.

Now, a friend of mine, more familiar with the EU, said that the Empire built a prototype Death Star, which was merely an skeleton, pretty much like the one displayed - but I don't think ROTS would follow the EU that much; also, some people who are unaware of this would get confused.

So, my theory is: that scene happens some years later.

Ep. III DVD - Purple vertical line?
Time
Originally posted by: TheCassidy
I see what you mean, now.

It could be purple fringing which is an issue with many consumer digital cameras, whether this is an issue with the high-end DV cameras used on EPIII I am unsure of.

It's cause is debatable, but the general consensus is that purple fringing occurs when the lens is wide open in a high-contrast environment. the highlights become overexposed and specular reflections tend to 'max out.'

In theory, the smaller the aperature, the less purple fringing should occur. Maybe this is why EPII is lit so damned brightly for the most part. Think Jedi temple scenes and all of the daylight backgrounds. The more light, the smaller the aperature, less purple fringing.

Less light (EPIII), bigger aperature, more purple fringing.

This, of course, is just me talking out of my ass here, as I don't know if purple fringing is an issue with the Sony HDCF950 used to shoot EPIII.

I don't agree with this theory, because those shots showed in the example are mainly composite shots, made up of several elements, most of those merely CGI, so never actually filmed with a phisical camera. So that purple line should have been invisible or partially covered at least. Also, I belive such glitches would be noticeable on post-production.

My theory is that it's a glitch caused by the computer when showing up DVDs.

EDIT: fixed some typos.

I thought you guys deserved to know what has happened regarding this episode.

There was this person who used to work for my uncle, at his farm I belive, and used to steal from him. He eventually found out, and fired him, but decided not to press charges against him, he just fired him. That person, filled with evil thoughts, would clearly not get any jobs later, and sweared he would have his revenge. He eventually met 3 other people who had the shared the same hate for all that is good, and planned their revenge, all of those were previously arrested before.

On that night they had some beers and consumed some drugs at a local bar, and went to my uncle's house. As they locked all the family in the bathroom, they stole some goods to make it look like a robbery, and told my uncle it was him, and that he was getting his revenge, and stabbed him four times.

Most things they stole, they eventually dropped off in the woods nearby, including some clothes. But the thing is, all of those clothes were clothes that were used by people who were in the prison, and they had numbers on them. By those numbers, the police was able to know the responsibles for that crime and capture them. The ex-employee who wanted revenge, two other men, and a minor.

Now, in Brazil you can do pretty much what you want and get away with it, so the minor is most likely to be released, and the other 3 guys will probably get 5 to 10 years, if they don't escape before that, which is VERY likely.

Now, that been said, the whole case has been solved, and this thread has served its porpouse, so I rather declare this a dead thread. Also, I ask for trollers here to respect my uncle's memory (I don't belive they will, so I ask for Jay to please lock this thread).
