OK I finally understood your solution. Unfortunally it is not 100% accurate, and is based on an assumption (depending on how the prisoners are chosen, you can either be sure, or be almost sure). It is a good solution, but still not completly mathematically correct. I think it goes to your definition of "practical mathematics", agains my clear notion of "logical mathematics".

As I said before I'm completly sure that it is "logically" impossible, but I'll try to think of a way to improve your solution - even though I'll never get to 100% accuracy, it might lead to an error, even though the chances of getting it right are huge.

I must say it was one of the most intriguing logical problems I've ever seen. I'll ask this one to some people I know, see if they can come up with a better answer - chances are they won't.

Willy Wonka was too "70s kids movie" to me. Like Disney's "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", you know? Both movies have that creepy early 70s thing going on, the plot is bizarre almost surrealistic, and the kid actors are too irritating to watch. Tim Burton will probably add some Danny Elfman soundtrack (basically depressive kids going "la la la la"), add some goth-depressive aura to the whole thing, and change the ending.

I also ocansilnally visit a buddist temple nearby and they have these statues with the sun symbol. The monks are always asked about it, and they always slowly reply with a smile on their face that it is not meant to be a reference to nazism. The chinese used this symbol for thousands of years before nazism. In south america, some psuedo-nazi parties used a symbol used for "summing" constant values (don't know how to translate that), and yet you can see that very same symbol today on a MicroSoft Excel spreadsheet (it's the "functions" button).

About the swastica thing: it's not really the swastica. The swastica is turned 45 degrees to the right. That simbol is actually the ancient chinese symbol for the sun. In some budist temples, you'll find it (and the most frequently asked question in a buddist temple refers to the "swastica" on the monks statues).

They make the anime for japanese audiences. If an ocidental TV station wants to buy it and cut it so that "moms" don't sue them, it's their problem (and yes, I've heard that CN had some problems with FLCL even though they censored some of it, some moms complained about it).

Imagine there are only 5 prisoners, not 100, under the same rules. Before the 5th day, a prisoner CANNOT ask for freedom, as it is impossible that every other prisoner was called. So, after the 5th day, if a prisoner is called to the room and hasn't been called before, he can asume that either everyone was in the room before, or that there is someone still waiting to go. If the lamp is off, that means he was the last one and should ask for freedom.

But WHY did the other prisoner set the light off? Basically, what you said is: the last prisoner set the light off if he has been into the room before, but this can lead to an error. Let's asume only ONE prisoner is called for 5 straight days, and he sets the light off when he is called again the last day. So another prisoner gets called, it is the 6th day and the light is off, so he claims to be the last one, and is wrong.

I say it's mathematically impossible, DanielB says it can be done. Anyone else here might want to give an opinion, so we can decide once and for all if this one has a solution?
