The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

For me though, while it rehashes a lot of scenes from Star Wars (the cantina bit being the worst and most unneeded offender), it wasn’t such a big deal.

Was the bar they go to really seen as a rip-off of the bar scene in Star Wars?
I’ve only seen it once, but I don’t remember anything from that scene that copies the one in Star Wars and I was fully expecting it at that point in the movie.
I’m guessing people who have this complaint don’t go to bars.

What age did you guys get your first girlfriend (or boyfriend)? Because I’m 16 now, and I’ve never gotten so much as a playful kiss on the cheek, let alone gotten into a full fledged relationship. Is that normal or am I just really lame?

I had a girlfriend at 16 or 17. But I didn’t have a relationship that meant anything till i was 21.

I know it seems really important right now, but at 16 you have no idea what you want. You’re above normal in my book.

Yes to this. Right now you’re much better off focusing on figuring out who and what you are than trying to attach yourself to someone else. You’ll look back in 5 years and realize that you are much different person than you are now. And That’s Good.

You’re confusing disenchantment with realization.

They’re usually one and the same. First comes realization, then disenchantment.

I also think my post came off hateful more so than my intended playfulness, so I apologize if that’s the case.
You know I love ya!

I finished ST2 last night. I had very little interest in the sequel as I felt I got all I wanted outta ST1 and I usually find sequels reductive and derivative. But, after a lame opening with lame characters that would later almost completely destroy the entire season, I was quickly pulled back in! The acting form the main cast is just terrific. The kids seem real and are a joy to watch.
Ep. 7 was totally stupid and unnecessary. The dialog was terrible as were the performances by these new characters. The whole episode could have been a quick scene with only El going to find the guy who “hurt mother” and finding out ON HER OWN that hurting people don’t make anything better.
I love the first one and, despite having little interest and no faith in it, really liked the sequel. I’m not dying to see #3, but I’ll certainly be watching it.

Neither the OT nor the EU were butchered to conform to the Holiday Special or include “holidayisms”, so your argument is invalid.

That’s not in the OT.

  • Death of Chief Bast aboard the Death Star needs to be reconsidered, as he appeared in SWHS a year later.

That’s not in the OT.

  • Kashyyyk, as shown in SWHS (and drawn by Ralph McQuarrie), eventually appeared in ROTS.

That’s not in the OT.

  • According to “The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episode III”, Itchy appeared in ROTS.

That’s not in the OT.

  • Lumpa appeared in several EU literature, and Waroo is a canonical character since Aftermath: Empire’s End.

That’s not in the OT.

That’s not in the OT.

So it seems that both OT and EU include several mentions to SWHS

None of that was in the OT.

MY thoughts on various changes

I don’t see anyone wanting a CG Clive Revell to replace Ian in Jedi and the PT.

The original Emperor from ESB is my favorite. I love the look and, even more so, the personality. Cunning, smart and sinister. I love Ian in ROTJ too, so I don’t bark much about it, but I really would have liked to see them stick closer to the original representation.

Referring to the 1981 version always irks me because we all watched Star Wars on VHS for years without having any problems with that subtitle being in the crawl, but now it’s apparently a crime against cinema.

I got no problem with the subtitle, but the way it’s implemented is the first in a long line of lazy changes.
Ady’s Revisited has the subtitle and the original timing, making it my ideal version.

It’s time for me to come clean with you guys…I’ve never seen the unaltered OT.

And yet you still argue that Hayden in ROTJ makes more sense than Shaw.

LOL

It’s not like I’ve never seen the footage. I don’t think I need to see it within the context of the whole movie to take a stance on it. To me, Shaw as Anakin is a plot hole.

Old good guys die, ghosts are old men. Old bad guy dies, ghost is young man. It makes more sense that he looks like someone you (and Luke!) saw 5 minutes before than someone you haven’t seen in 6 hours (during a marathon) and Luke has never seen in his life.

If he’s the same guy from 5 minutes ago, why does isn’t he bald and gray?

For the same reason Obi-Wan isn’t still cut in half and Yoda isn’t still sick.
