Are There Any Visually Striking Moments in the PT?
Time

Surprised to see so much love for the battle at the beginning of ROTS. To me, it just looks like the intro to a video game with live (although wooden) actors in some shots spitting out dialog that doesn't mean anything to anyone. As RLM pointed out in their review, there too much crap on the screen. It's just a big mess of ships and explosions everywhere and I dunno who the good guys or bad guys are because they changes ship designs between each movie. But that really doesn't matter, because we soon find out that it was just a flashy opening scene with no barring on the rest of the movie. sigh.

I did think the Naboo city looked great. Except that there were no people anywhere. It's like a ghost town. Too much fighting on the dance floor I guess.

(anybody know if Bob Cobb is on the design team? If not, they've done a fine job at re-creating his style).

You mean Ron Cobb, and I can't find any IMDB credits for him past 2006. (With the exception of a documentary on Dark Star, but that could be archival footage.) Would be nice if he worked on Prometheus though.

Yes, I did mean RON Cobb. I haven't found anything that points to his being involved in Prometheus either, but the Prometheus it's self as well as the ground vehicles look like his designs to me. Maybe they were taken from his design work on the first two Alien films?

We just don't know how things will play out yet, maybe humanity is plunged into a sort of technological dark age?

Riddley has stated that the difference in tech is there because he didn't want to make a movie that looks like it's from the 70's. Simple as that.

If the movie is good, I won't care about these differences and will chalk it up to the idea that this is a big top of the line scientific research vessel and it has more advanced tech than the much older oil rig we saw in the first film.

...How I'll rationalize it's existence 87 years before the medical facilities we see in AlienS however, I just don't know...

Does Scott consider any of the sequels canon, though? If he doesn't, then he probably isn't going to go out of his way to make Prometheus mesh with them.

I'm confused. What do the sequels have to do with anything? The tech in Prometheus doesn't even match Alien, which is what ray_afraid is talking about. No one is talking about the sequels.

Well I'm talking a bit about Aliens. For me the first two films are cannon, so I'd like it if Prometheus fit closely into that world. But again, it's not a deal breaker for me, at least not until I see the film. Other than the touch-screen tech everything else looks like Alien to me.

Ok, so the tech thing has started to bother me, a bit. Like I've said in this thread,  I can buy that the Prometheus is a newer, state-of-the-art scientific research vessel and the Nostromo a Mack truck so the differences in tech seem appropriate to me. But I watched Aliens last night and was struck with how the design team really nailed the world of Alien. Everything looks like it could exist in the world the first film created. But there is no sign of Prometheus style touch-screen tech anywhere. Certainly the medical facilities and other locations we see would feature this kind of tech if it existed in this world, yeah? Especially when you take into account the time between the two films. So i did some digging around on the topic on found this Q&A with Riddley Scott and co-witter Damon Lindelof. They touch on a number of things like using real practical sets apposed to CGI (hooray!), Scotts decision to shoot in 3D ("it works like a son of a bitch" he says) and Scotts decision to make the tech in this film sleeker and more modern instead of the grungy look of Alien. So there ya have it. Lindelof gives the defense some of us on this thread have subscribed to (nuclear submarine vs. oil rig), but it seems the difference is there because Scott wanted it that way. "Creative decision". A bit disappointing, but it doesn't break the film for me. From what I've seen the Prometheus' touch-screens are the only things that jump out at me as being from another world. The costumes, creatures and vehicle/prop design all look very 'Alien' to me (anybody know if Bob Cobb is on the design team? If not, they've done a fine job at re-creating his style).

My favorite part is force-pushing the crowd. This one alien says "STOP PUSHING ME!" over and over again.

I remember that! I also remember the Darth Maul fight at the end being frustrating as hell. I recall sitting there in frustration wondering why my determination to finish the game was so strong when it wasn't very good and I hated the movie. Them was dark days...

That's because it's made now and isn't meant to be a setup for a film from 1979.

It's a different story set in the same universe it isn't a route map to Alien.

As for Nostromo being a Model T.

It travels faster than light, it keeps the crew in cryonic suspension and it lands and takes off in one unit.

The two ships practically do the same thing to the same level of sophistication only one is a space truck and looks dingy and older and the other is a science vessel/corporate ambassadorial/store window ship and looks flashy and new.

It's surface details and surface details change extremely fast (I noticed this morning looking in the mirror).

I'm with this logic all the way. Perfect sense to me.

I wanna point out that from what I know about the film, people who are interested in this only as a set up to Alien are in it for the wrong reasons and will be disappointed. To make a Star Wars analogy in regards to this as a Alien prequel, this won't be "Ah, so that's how Anikin became Darth Vader" it's more like "Ah, so that's how that dragon skeleton got there". Which is possibly a much more interesting story.

...did that make sense?

I could be wrong. There's a lot of conflicting info out there.

Ah, I get it. Thanks for clearing that up. I thought that was a fairly random phrase for at least two or three users to have chosen!
My favorite part: SilverWook is still ready for the trials and he's the one who explained it!

Well if he earned the title, might as well keep it. On a horror forum I frequent I'm close to 1,000 posts and at that point you can customize your title.  How exciting!

Well, that is an important part of a fan edit...  Is it not?

That implies that every thread regarding a fan edit can touch upon this topic. It really is it's own topic when seen this way.

Every thread regarding a fan edit should touch on this topic. There isn't much point in creating a thread for an edit that won't be distributed. Maybe the discussion has gone on too long or maybe it's not the right time to discuss such matters, but I'd certainly like to know how, when and where I'll be able to get this thing. And it's not as if this is detracting from the major topics of the day or burying an important discussion.

Yoda seems to be looking at him and he seems to be offering Luke a hug. That actually makes this more believable than Haydens head which isn't acknowledging anything that's happening in the scene at all. He's just standing there looking like a jerk.

To say Hayden isn't acknowledging his surroundings is patently untrue.

He's obviously ogling Leia. =P

Ahh, hadn't thought of that. I figured he was having second thoughts about killing the Emperor. I mean, he just went from being one of the most feared and powerful people in the galaxy to a ghost at a teddy bear picnic in the woods. Not really an upgrade.

NEWS FROM ADY: Recently he attempted to upload another video, this time using a 25 second leader as he used on his last YouTube vid (which worked) but FB denied this one as they have his past ones and gave his account a temp ban....so he'll be absent for a little bit due to that. On the up side however, he has re-rendered all the files damaged in the Great "April Fools" Hard-Drive Crash of 2012....so NOTHING has been lost.

Thanks for the update! Good to know nothing has been lost. Do you what the video he was trying to upload was?

Nah. It's still a scene from the sequel to a cool movie, though.

Fixed.

BEGONE, YOU PITIFUL HALF-MAN!

It's just a very lame remake of the original! At the beginning, all the guys are down on their luck just like the 1st (but shouldn't they be heroes at this point? they did save the world after all and that seemed appreciated at the end of the 1st film...) There's an ancient evil that wants to consume our world just like the first. The hotel sequence from the original is replace by a court room scene, the marshmallow man is replaced by a walking Statue of Liberty I really could go on and on. It's everything shitty Hollywood sequels are known and loathed for.
