Godzilla 1985 - Reconstruction Project (Released)

Godzilla 1985 - 1080p version update

I’ve begun working on the 1080p version of Godzilla 1985. I’ve ripped the uncompressed video track from the Kraken Blu-ray of The Return of Godzilla and added it to the project file, where I’ve boosted the contrast and performed a bit of white balance adjustment to alleviate the mediocre black levels and slight green tint of the Toho transfer. From here, I’ll be approaching the rest of the reconstruction in a slightly more organized fashion than I did for the 720p version, making a few separate passes over the project:

The first pass will consist of synchronizing the 1080p video with the existing 720p version. I’ve already begun this step; it’s a lot easier having already done it once, and I’ve gotten through the scene of Maki and Okumura being rescued from the fishing boat, which probably took me less than an hour. (I may also replace the stock footage from Godzilla, King of the Monsters! using the Criterion transfer.)
The second pass will consist of re-working the “patches” from the Monsters HD transfer that I used to cover various titles, captions and location supers in the Japanese version. This will mean re-aligning some of them and adjusting the colors somewhat, since unlike the 720p version I’ve actually done a spot of color correction on the Japanese source.
The third pass will be completely re-doing the subtitles on the Russian dialogue. I’ll be using a rip of the Australian VHS that contains the original theatrical subtitles as a source and as a reference for the position and timing. (I’ll also be using similar means to more accurately recreate the “100 MILES SOUTH OF TOKYO” location super.)
The final step will be applying film grain to the entire project, which will hopefully lend some consistency to the visuals as the video switches between SD and HD sources. This won’t be a cheap, default video effect; I’ll be using the same stock 35mm grain plate I used on my Destroy All Monsters project.

After that, I’ll probably be making two separate renders of the finished project. One will be an MP4 file in the original aspect ratio that’s encoded at a somewhat lower bitrate to keep the file size down (basically designed for convenience), while the other will be an MKV file encoded at a similar bitrate to the original Blu-ray source, using the appropriate codecs and dimensions for Blu-ray burning (I’ll probably include chapter stops as well if I can figure out how to add them).

I’ll keep you guys posted on my progress!

Sounds great!

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?

And does anybody think that LFL could create a better version than Legacy?

Yes. Scanning right off of the negative and doing an accurate grade to an unfaded release print would destroy Legacy.

Is the negative still around? I’ve heard varying reports.
And do you think they’re willing to do an accurate grade? And could they resist the urge to mess with things?
I guess I asked the wrong question. It’s not a matter of could they, but would they.

At some point in the film the protagonists should stop to watch all the previous SW films in a marathon, and we should see it unfold in real time.

Yes! This way we can have the older characters say things like:

“Well, this isn’t how that went down…”
“Gungans aren’t even real!”
“That’s not what happened at all!”
“I guess they did all their research by talking to unemployed drunks who were children at the time.”

I like this.

Well, that makes room for some hope then…
But the fact that it’s hard to get them interested at all is reason for concern, right?

And does anybody think that LFL could create a better version than Legacy? I’m very interested in that. I can’t see them putting in the research, time and care Mike and Harmy have put into their versions.
I can’t see an official release being better than Despecialized if they turn Legacy down.

The Special Editions simply don’t work without the prequels. We’re never told who Hayden is in any version of the OT, so if someone who hasn’t seen the prequels watches the 2004 or 2011 version of ROTJ, they would be utterly confused when Hayden shows up.

One would assume that Hayden was the ghost of Anakin because he’s right next to the ghosts of Obi-Wan & Yoda.

Why would anyone assume that? We just met Anakin and he didn’t look anything like Hayden.

The more I see of Krennic the more he reminds me of JeJerrod in earlier and superior draughts of Revenge of the Jedi. I wish there was a way of making JeJerrod less weak in the final film.

Somehow make his deleted scene in the third act HD and reinstate it into the film.

Not really enough though is it? I would replace him with a new scripted performance.

By 2040, CGI will become so photo realistic and the software to create it so inexpensive that this will certainly be an achievable goal to the common man within that timeframe.

That’s a nice thought. There’s only so much fanedits can do currently, but technology like that will open up a whole new world.

You’d still have to deal with the legalities of using someone’s likeness though, and you’d still have to find a convincing voice actor.

Nah. Just cast me.
