The lack of backstory and deep character development is, to me, one of the stronger points of the movie. That said: I understand how some fans, many perhaps, may be disappointed or find it lacking. For the younger fans who came into the franchise at the Prequels, they’ve always had a Lucas-controlled series where every bit of minutia is backstoried and tied into the main narrative and characters. It’s exactly how Lucas shrunk the universe and turned it into “a solar system far far away”.

This isn’t a Lucas film. We don’t get to know the characters’ histories or why they may or may not know each other. That’s perfectly ok with me. In fact, I prefer it. Star Wars77 had all sorts of hinted- at pasts, but it didn’t get bogged down in explaining them. As someone mentioned earlier, we don’t know thing one about Han & Chewie, how they met, or how long they’ve been together. Yet they are wildly popular.

Sometimes people are who they are and don’t need an arc. The Rogue One team accepted a mission and they worked together to see it through. They didn’t take the mission for personal growth or to become The A Team. They had a job to do. I don’t know the story behind every person I work with every day (nor do I care). We have a common goal and we put in the work to accomplish it. We’re not growing. We’re working.

Very good post.

Every time I see someone complain about how safe TFA was, and then I think of all the shit Disney got for a female lead, a black co-lead, and a Hispanic co-co-lead, when I think of the film killing off Han, when I think of the way the film tore up the ending of Jedi and tore up Han and Leia’s relationship (both in good, realistic ways), the way that Luke didn’t appear until the last scene…I have to laugh my ass off at that person.

Those weren’t really risks were they? They are an attempt to be more inclusive as the times would dictate any film with a large cast should be.

It’s pretty much a retro fit of Star Wars with an infusion of diversity.

Yeah, I agree with that. It’s not a risk just because some idiots who are out of step with the times got mad about it.

As for killing off Han, I guess you could say it was a risk.

I really can’t imagine that was a surprise to many people. I thought it was a given that Han would bite it as soon as Harrison signed on.

Interested to hear an explanation as to why Vader’s spending his days on the planet where he lost his arm, legs, lungs, hair, perfect skin, and wife.

I figured he chose it because of all of his negative associations with the place, so that he can cultivate angst and hatred to fuel his power. I saw a blurb from Hidalgo’s visual dictionary that said his meditation chamber overlooks the location of his duel with Obi-Wan. I bet he often just stares out at that and stews in the bad vibes.

I guess the dark side is fueled by pain… but then why no trip to Tatooine?

Because he’s never been there and the guy who told you that story was a lying drunk.

But Owen thought he should have stayed there and not gotten involved?

I was talking about Obi-Wan! 😉

It took me over two years to write it, but write it I did; my Ep. II re-write is 100% finished.

Good for you then Heather, but it’s not a final draft yet?

I consider it final, but I’m not making any promises.

I wish you’d have learned not to make promises before you broke my heart
(I know, I know. We promised not to talk about that here. Sorry. Been drinkin’.)

I personally use the “fan film” argument as an excuse to see them. I’ll simply enjoy them for what they are, SW fan films made by directors that grew up with the OT. If the film ends up being bad or mediocre, then why should I care? It’s just a silly fan film. And if it’s good, well, the it’s an enjoyable fan film.

I’m just tired of crap. I’ve seen 4 god-awful Star Wars films in a row. I’m tired of paying these assholes any money when they have vandalized and failed to restore the only good films in the series for almost 20 years.

I agree with this. I have some interest in R1 because it’s the part of the story I’ve thought about the most. My late best friend and I were working on a story where we were characters who helped the Rebels get the plans to Leia. I’m interested to see if I like this movie enough to re-write parts of our story to fit in with this, or if I’ll dismiss it and continue where we had left off. OR (if I really love R1) re-write our story so that it has nothing to do with the DS plans. (I’m making this animated comic book one way or the other.)
But I have no excitement for R1. No driving desire to see it ASAP.

The pics I’ve seen of Tarkin look terrible…

“pics”?

I googled it and could only find one very low res picture from RO.

The only Leia one I could find was the one posted above.

I saw two, but now one is gone. It was a kinda profile view. He looks somehow “dopey” in both.

Not too bad really, but I’m so familiar with Peter Cushing (from far more than just Star Wars) that there is little chance of it not pulling me out of the moment. It does looks like something I could adjust to though if the performance is good.

Thanks for your replies, guys! So, it’s just me and Dom, eh? 😉
I haven’t seen many of the movies. Just TMP, TWOK, …maybe SFS a long time ago… and Nemisis. The only one I liked was TWOK. From what I remember, TMP was just too long. Mainly because of VERY boring shots of the Enterprise floating around. I might give it another watch. Oh and I saw the first two of the new Trek movies too. Meh.
Is SFS any good? I saw it when I was very young. I know Kramer prefers it to TWOK

Star Destroyer Bridges were grey and lighted, and should be grey and lighted, not black and dark.

They’re black n’ dark in ROTJ. I just noticed this last time I watched it. Scenes on the bridge look like the characters are hanging out after close.

Darth Vader should use both hands when handling his sabre, jokes aside.

I thought he fought one handed in the OT. He certainly does for most of the ESB fight.

Monster is their best album! Most REM fans I meet harshly disagree, but for me it’s the best by a long distance.

Yes! Well, I wouldn’t say it’s their best, for me personally that’s Automatic. But Monster is hideously underrated, especially by their fans.

Agreed. Monster is fantastic.
