Info, & Help Wanted: Star Wars "Story Of" LP's (The Definitive Collection)
Time

I have all three albums and I could feasibly do lossless (WAV) transfers of all them and create WAV & FLAC sets for trading. I could even create 24 bit 96 kHz high-resolution versions and create DVD-A/V versions.

My 'Story of Star Wars' LP has not even been played yet - I have an absolutely mint copy. (I also had the box set of the cassette version so played that instead - to death, in fact. By the end of the 80s it had stretched so much that it was probably twice its original length!)

My Adventures of Luke Skywalker (Story of Empire LP) seems to be very clean. I bought it 2nd hand, but it's in excellent condition. Again, the version I  played at the time was the cassette release.

But I played my Return of the Jedi LP a LOT back in the 80s (no cassette!) so it would potentially need some attention in terms of pop/crackle removal.

But I guess if I went to all the effort of doing this I may as well create my own releases because I'm also a professional designer who has created a lot of CD and DVD art in the past. In fact, if memory serves, I actually started a full hi-res reconstruction of the 'Story of Star Wars' vinyl art and booklet a while back...

RETURN OF THE JEDI story LP (Released)
Time

Can't wait for this. I bought the original vinyl release the day it came out. I still even have the receipt. it cost me £3.99 from WH Smith.

I have the original album, complete with booklet.

I was thinking maybe someone could create a fresh looking cover, different in someway maybe !!

I'm a professional designer (who also frequently creates 'bootleg' art) and I'd be very tempted to stay as close to the original artwork, as movealong did with his efforts. I feel these projects should be about preserving the the original release as much as possible.

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

I have a German copy of the special edition in German...well, kind of German.

I bought a knock-off copy of Star Wars on DVD in Moscow from the infamous Gorbushka (Russia thrived on black market products).

I couldn't believe it at the time because Star Wars hadn't been released on DVD yet (it was officially released in 2004 and I bought my Russian copy in 2003...and it isn't a VHS or laserdisc rip).

I couldn't work out how they got a copy!

Anyway, when I watched it I found that the title crawl was in German and the movie has the German title 'Krieg de Sterne'.

weird!

Idea & Info: Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining' PAL complete/preservation edition
Time

Yes, I agree. I hadn't thought this through, had I?

I will probably downconvert a BDrip.

As an aside, something else I want to preserve about this movie is the soundtrack, which has long been out-of-print and never even made it to CD. It'd be nice to have a lossless version with high-res scans, etc

Does anyone know if anyone else has tried this?

Idea & Info: Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining' PAL complete/preservation edition
Time

As many of you may know there are three versions of The Shining:

146 min (original version)

142 min (cut)

119 min (cut) (European version)

The 146 minute was cut after initial test screenings so is most likely completely unavailable.

Now, commercially, the 142 minute version is only available in the US as a R1 NTSC

The 119 minute version is only available outside of the US as R2 PAL

However…

…back in the 1980s  the longer (probably 142 minute version) was broadcast on UK television, therefore  PAL 720x576.

I want to try to track down copies of that broadcast to recreate the best possible edition of the longer version of The Shining in PAL.

Can anyone help?

Info Wanted: what is the best version of Star Wars theatrical preservation?
Time

Great, thanks for the links/information, Moth3r.

Someone has also pointed me toward:

'Star Wars Theatrical V3 DVD'

Posted by...........: Dark_Jedi

Any idea how this one differs from the others?

Indeed, can anyone explain, in a nutshell, what the basic differences are between these various versions (to save trawling through many pages and potentially hundreds of posts!)

For example, the despecialised is 'not 100% authentic'- how does it differ?

all the best

Info Wanted: Walt Disney presents the story of... (Albums) - has anyone preserved them?
Time

I have The Rescuers on vinyl, though it's quite scratchy and will take a lot of work to remove the pops and crackles. I also have The Jungle Book on cassette, which I played so many times as a kid that it stretched.

I have mp3 copies of both. No lossless, unfortunately.

I'd also like to see these records preserved as lossless with hi-res album scans...

'Let It Be' - has anyone done done a quality preservation? (Released)
Time

There has been recent release of Let it Be. It's taken from an uncropped 16mm print and the sound is great. Don't know if it is any help:

The Beatles
Let It Be Film Documentary
Twickenham Film Sudios (first part of January 1969)
Apple Studios (January 22 -31, 1969)
London, England

Audio & Video Restoration by Hobnail 2011

Source: the original Uncropped Fullscreen 16mm Stereo version from a very high quality German print (see additional notes below)

Lineage: Demonoid > my hd > Planetrock

Includes
Full Menu & Chapters
Also a Bonus
An additional feature has been added in the form of optional captions which provide the exact date for each scene

Video attributes:
Video compression mode: MPEG-2 (DxVA on)
  TV system: 525/60 (NTSC)
  Aspect ratio: 4:3
Display mode: Both Pan&scan and Letterbox
  Source picture resolution: 720x480 (525/60)
  Frame rate: 30.00
  Source picture letterboxed: Not letterboxed
  Bitrate: 6.93Mbps

Audio attributes:
  Audio coding mode: Dolby Digital
  Sampling rate: 48kHz
  Audio application mode: Not Specified
  Number of audio channels:2.0
  Bitrate: 448 Kbps
  Number of audio streams: 2

Source Notes:
Let It Be was originally conceived as a TV documentary and was thus shot in 4:3 on 16mm stock. Later the decision was made to format it into a feature film, necessitating a pan-and-scan transfer of the 16mm film to a widescreen 35mm frame. The original 4:3 version was then left largely unseen by the public, with most broadcasters opting for the widescreen version or the shrunken 4:3 version released on laserdisc.

Previously we presented the widescreen theatrical version of the film with a new stereo soundtrack. Here we offer the original uncropped 16mm version from a very high quality German print. The extra picture at the top and bottom gives the film a different feel - more like a documentary and less like a theatrical feature. This version is totally different to the grainy, heavily cropped print released on vhs and laserdisc in 1981, and includes the same remastered stereo soundtrack as the widescreen version. An additional feature has been added in the form of optional captions which provide the exact date for each scene

A scant few subtitles in German originally marred this print. Here they have been seamlessly removed, providing fans with the first ever opportunity to watch this unique movie in uninterrupted high quality vision and sound.

Audio and video restoration by Hobnail. This DVD was produced and released for free, so don’t sell it!
Should The Beatles ever release the LET IT BE film in any official capacity, please support the artists and filmmakers and buy the official product. Produced in 2011. NTSC Region free.

Thanks to Roger & Hob

Added Notes (from Hob)
There have been some slight extra changes made to this version, mainly the fixing of dodgy synch from the original film. A couple of bits come to mind,
such as Mal Evan's anvil banging in Maxwell's Silver Hammer and parts of John's vocal on Dig It, but there were also out-of-synch moments in a lot of other
songs. It should be pointed out that many (or even most) of the cutaways and closeups come from different takes or, worse still, completely different songs.
So you can't really expect these sorts of shots will ever look right. In such cases I just left them as they are.

I also fixed the ending of Two Of Us which previously switched to mono. I'd overlooked the fact that the stereo ending can be found on one of the Naked promo
videos.

The resynched audio is based partly upon work I originally did for Unsurpassed Promos disc 4. I was then pointed in the direction of a cd compiled by
HenryTheHorse which uses the Nagras to reconstruct the movie soundtrack. This saved me all the trouble of identifying and locating all the scores of different
fragments used in the first half of the film which, in all honesty, I would not have had the knowledge to do. Unfortunately his cd was not synched to the
film images, so that meant a hellish night spent aligning it to the optical soundtrack. A couple of bits (= One After 909 and I Me Mine) sounded better
on the optical soundtrack to me so I didn't use those. In doing so I innadvertantly cut out a four letter word from George at the start of I Me Mine... here
expletive in question has been restored to its rightful place in the proceedings...

The optical soundtrack used here is actually from the BBC broadcast, which sounded noticeably better than the German one.

'Raiding The Lost Ark' - a filmumentary. (Released)
Time

Jambe Davdar said:

Thanks AvP. I will check those out when I get home.

Any of these would be good too:

http://www.theraider.net/films/crusade/tv_specials.php

Anybody know if there was a Story LP for Radiers?

Yes, there was a 'Story of' LP for Raiders, but it's slightly different than the usual 'Story of' LPs (ie, Star Wars) because there is no voice-over narration. It also goes by a slightly different naming convention "Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Movie on Record"

It's the same length as other story of LPs, though: 45-50mins long

http://ny-image0.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.246094296.jpg

It's also worth listening to because it contains sound takes that are not the same as the cinema release.

I only have an mp3 copy of this, unfortunately.  However, I do have an original copy of the 'Story of' Temple of Doom, which I could do a lossless rip of.

EDIT: I also have all the original Marvel comics adaptations sealed. In principle, I could make scans, but I'm kind anxious about opening them....

Having said that, I do also own the hardback annual UK print of the adaptation, which I don't mind scanning. Which are the 'missing scenes'?

Other stuff: I also own the Ballantine books' "Raiders of the Lost Ark Illustrated screenplay" from 1981 which contains all the storyboards....

EDIT: I'M AN IDIOT. I thought I was responding to a message on the last page. not the first. These questions have of course already been answered. lesson learned: don't post when you're half asleep!

Editdroid's SW 1977 DVD (Mysterious 720p Anamorphic LD Preservation?) (Released)
Time

Hello everyone,

This is probably going to be a silly question...but I'm getting a little confused about the numerous various versions of projects.

I'm looking for the best quality version of Star Wars that is closest to the original 1977 theatrical version.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I'm looking for a good laserdisc transfer that has been converted to anamorphic. Is that right?  I've heard editdroid mentioned and dark_jedi...but which is the best? and how do I get hold of it/them?

I hear that many people are not happy with the official release of 'star wars' original theatrical 2006...

So, are there any fan preservation/edits to better it?

sorry to be so uninformed!

best
