jonh, are you suggesting we reshoot the reshoots?!
jonh, are you suggesting we reshoot the reshoots?!
Changing someone’s hair in motion like that would actually be extremely difficult, and I think anything I came up with would probably look worse!
For obi wan, anakin and luke, I have photographed my hand, and for yoda, I did a montage with the ROTS yoda arm …
frankensteins
That is brilliant!!! Awesome work, as always, jonh!
Red or green?! So I shrunk the bodies some more and added a little murkiness to the water to help cover. I also made each face slightly different.
Palpatine Clones - Red
Palpatine Clones - Green
EDIT: I extended the clips to show the entire scene for context, specifically for the red. The original scene had both red and green vats, so I kept that, and just changed the large main vats to red. Switching everything to red would mess with the coloring/reflection/lighting too much.

a cartoonishly large schlong.
🤔 Now that’s an idea!
Much better, only thing I see that could be nitpicked is his size, mainly the broad shoulders.
Definitely digging the red though.
Yeah, that’s a tough one. The shoulders are tricky, but will take another look when I can!
Can I just go on record as saying that my god, Poppasketti, you certainly do not get enough credit! You are honestly one of the most talented VFX people I know!
Thank you, that’s very kind! But I think there are many at OT.com and in this thread that demonstrate at least as much talent. It’s what’s so fun about being here!
Darth Sadifous suggested making the fluid red when first discussing this idea, and as soon as I tried it I liked it. It brings color contrast to the scene, it feels a little more Palpatine to me, and I found the green vats a bit cliche. I could try the green, though, if that’s what people prefer!
Ok, here’s a version without the lightning scars and scaled down a bit! Still need to tweak the track a little.

Yeah that was my question too. People seemed to think it should be more post-lightning deformation Emperor Palpatine than Senator Palpatine. I could try the other way though!
Have you tried to give them slightly different expressions?
I could look into that! It seemed to me like all of the Snoke’s had the same look, almost like the incubating star-baby in Space Odyssey.
It be cool if someone could replace the vats of Snoke clones with ones of Palapatine instead.
I’m not sure if this is something for this edit, but here’s a first pass at this idea:

Also, I just want to say I love the work being done here. It’s really fantastic and inspiring to see!
Poppasketti, if you’re still out there listening, tell us what you think you could pull off! 😄
What would the heads look like? Senator Palpatine (middle-aged Ian McDiarmid) or the lightning-deformed emperor?
Already sent the PM!
Thanks guys! And thank you, Ash, for posting to the spleen!
Ha! Whenever you get to it is fine, Ash! Thank you!
Poppasketti, how did you put that together particularly the voice itself?
So I tried to follow an online tutorial, but it only got me so far, and I had to layer more on top of it. First, I recorded my voice with a Yeti Pro and applied the effects, which I’ll list below. Then, I had to supplement some sounds from Kylo’s actual dialogue (Y’s R’s and T’s) to fill it in. I also duplicated my voice clip and cranked the gain way up to try to create some clipping distortion as well, and then turned the levels on that clip way down to balance.
Here’s some specifics on the effects, though I’m not sure how well this would work as a template:
You can use Adobe Audition and even Premiere, which has Audition’s filters. My effects stack is as follows top-to bottom:
Note: first I would gain the audio up so it’s clipping or almost clipping.
Pitch Shifter (set to -2 semitones for my voice)
Distortion (cranked the positive way up; this is the filter you have to play around with the most as it’s very hard to dial in. What helped me the most was keeping the positive smoothing at 0, while the negative smoothing and time smoothing at 30)
GuitarSuite (compressor: 60 / filter: rez / type: lowpass / freq: 2800 / resonance: 85 / Box: Non-Amp Clock Raduio / Mix Amount: 50. Make sure the bypasses are unchecked except for the Distortion Bypass)
Amplify (set to -30, the distortion filter really cranks up the volume and needs to be offset, and if I touch the clip gain it changes the other effects)
Parametric EQ (brighten the sound by bringing the 3000hz and 9000hz frequencies up 5gb)
Studio Reverb (set preset to “Great Hall”, move Dry to 100 and Wet to 50. NOTE: I think it sounds better if this effect is in the audio track mixer and not the clip)
After finishing the V3 no-Palpatine version, I went back and looked at the Palpatine version and, as often happens when stepping away from a project for a few weeks, I noticed something I wanted to fix.
I still wasn’t happy with the sound mix for the Palpatine Contact scene, so I redid it. I have already uploaded all of the new files with the date “042020”, as well as the lossless audio, AC3, and DTS files for those who’d like to simply remix the audio themselves (the video is unchanged).
This is a relatively minor change, but I definitely recommend it as it’s an adjustment to a key V3 scene. I’m sorry for these post-release tweaks and fixes, as I know many have bandwidth limits and can’t just download new files all of the time.
Thank you everyone for the feedback and support! This project became more elaborate and rewarding than I ever imagined!
Here’s another quick pass of Kylo’s “You Were Right”.

Link to my cut of Rey’s vision while training in the forest. In this edit she is Rey Nobody, and she killed her parents: https://youtu.be/cJGP1fDZtWE
This is really well done! It gives Rey some early motivation/intrigue in the film, and it’s also just really well cut together!
Edit: Haven’t seen Don’s version, I’ll have to go back as I must have missed it.
Not a father, but into the dad jokes!
Stu, I like your ideas and glad you started a thread. Excited to see what you put together to share!
Glad we got something going, even if it needs more work!
idir_hh, I recorded with a Yeti Pro into Adobe Audition, pitched it down, and then added a couple distortion effects to it. In premiere, I also added a couple sounds from other helmeted Kylo dialogue to texturize it a little.
Just made a tweak to it, same link!
Yeah I agree, I can tweak that “right” a little further!
Loving the progress on the force ghosts, and that Anakin morphing work is wild.
- Some sound clip or soundalike of masked Kylo Ren saying, “You were right” to replace “I never lied to you” before going on to say, “Your parents were no one.”
I tried my hand at recording my own voice and processing it to sound like a helmeted Kylo-Ren to try and tackle this one. Let me know what you think:

“workstation situation” is a great album title.
…

Thanks Mind|Of|A|Child! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
FreezingTNT2, yeah Ash pointed that out before. Leia and Luke have a force connection at cloud city, when Luke is hanging from the antenna.
I’ll say it again: Representation is not politics. Representation is not an agenda.
This. So well said, EddieDean.
