Yeah, probably not. I just like the idea of doing anything with Finn in this one.😕
It’s such a shame they wasted Finn. Him and Rey meeting (and their budding friendship/relationship) was one of my favorite bits of the trilogy early on, and his back story was something we hadn’t seen before. After TFA, though, he clearly wasn’t a priority for any of the writers, and was just “also there”.
Here’s a hybrid of versions A and B of the Falcon end shot!
Falcon Shot - Option E
pw: fanedit
I’m glad there was support around Option A, and I can make that available along with any other versions people want, but I think I agree with DominicCobb and others’ feedback that the Falcon was a bit small and receded too quickly. So for this version, I made the Falcon bigger, recede slower, and matched as best I could snooker’s motion in the back half of Option B. I also increased the length of the lightspeed streak so its more prominent.
Unfortunately I don’t think cutting from her smiling in the original shot to her mouth open in the BTS shot quite works.
If this is the same take neerb placed into the edit a few pages back (replaced the audio and kept the same video), then I think it works well! You don’t need to change any shots.
I like D. 😉
D or bust, really.
I mean, right?
Alrighty, what I can do is make A recede a bit slower, show a bit more of the silhouette of the falcon over the sun, and make a longer lightspeed streak. That should synthesize the best of everything, or a close approximation!
More options for the final shot!
Falcon Shot - Option A
Falcon Shot - Option B
Falcon Shot - Option C
Falcon Shot - Option D
pw: fanedit
Option A = original comp with the newer model, now with an adjusted path to smooth it, and sped up the light speed jump.
Option B = snooker’s 2nd pass, now more integrated by adding motion blur, heat distortion, and making the engine glow more blue.
Option C = a recreation of snooker’s original pass, which had the Falcon slowing and making a wider turn to jump. It’s not exactly the same, I made a few small adjustments.
Option D = craziness.

Hey I just want to say thank you all for the feedback and enthusiasm for the falcon shots!!! Going through it all, I have ideas how to tweak the two current options, and I might play with a third option trying to recreate snooker’s first pass. That way, we’ll have several good options for people to choose from. Who knows, a part of me wants to play with the falcon just going wild with barrel rolls and flips as a joke (although these sorts of things tend to turn into actual shots once you go down that road)!
(this is me social distance applauding)
jonh! Amazing work as always!!!
I’m so sorry to hear, Holly. Like others have said, you’ve contributed incredible work and your talent is unmatched. I hope you’re able to get whatever you need.

Wow, neerb! That’s great! It’s a more humble delivery, and her voice quiver adds emotion to the line.
Edit: on the other hand, maybe she sounds a little less confident, which maybe undercuts the pride of the moment that she had in the original take? Just a thought!
Ok, here’s two options from me and snooker! I think both options work, and no hard feelings either way, since they really were a collaboration!

Falcon Shot - Option B

I made a couple of adjustments to Option A based on the last bit a notes, and made the hyperspace jump a bit more visually prominent. One of the reasons I had it down was to try to realistically show the haziness across a desert at dusk with the heat distortion and sand kicking up everywhere. This is why the Falcon starts to get distorted as it gets further into the distance and moves in front of the sun.
For the turn, I had a little pulse of the engines (both visually and in the audio) as if to show Rey accelerating. This was to try to make the shot more dynamic, but I could tone it down. And regarding the “fatness”, for Option A I added a bit of lens distortion towards the beginning of the clip to try to make it look more photographed and to try to match the Falcon’s appearance at the beginning of the scene when Rey approaches Tatooine. We could easily adjust though if it’s too much!
Here’s an update to the final shot:

I made the falcon bigger, engines stronger, adjusted light speed jump direction, and smoothed the path a bit. There’s also a few other small enhancements, such as light wrapping as the falcon crosses the sun at snooker’s suggestion, and applying the general camera shake of the shot to the ship so it’s better integrated!
I also will be posting a version of snooker’s soon. He rendered out the falcon as a separate element for me to comp in, so we will have options!

I like that idea snooker, but I’ll think you’ll need some interaction before cutting from Chewie to the sandcrawler. It might be weird to see a shot of Chewie at chess and then quickly cut to an exterior.
It’d be like establishing a scene twice.
Snooker, that’s a great idea and implementation!
I agree that the establishing Tatooine establishing shot should remain, either before or after the chess scene: first I thought before seemed most logical but I think Knight of Kalee might be right! It would be a nice buffer between the scenes to fade into the chess, and then cut to the Tatooine wide to show where they’re going.
Solely because when I watched it in the cinema an elderly woman started bursting with laughter. 😂
That’s amazing. This is why I’m okay with Darth Maul’s appearance in Solo.
Someone in the row in front of us just went, “whaaaaaaat?”
This is looking great. I actually think there isn’t enough engine glow in snooker’s. If anything I’d push the engine glow even more so that one doesn’t immediately notice any inadequacies with the model.
I agree.
This is another reason I like the previous clip a little better, I also think the movement doesn’t quite work as beautifully as it did in the other clip… But props to Poppasketti for giving it his all and trying something new! 😁 👍
Haha! Those are good points! I can bring the engine brightness up, although if you look at the rear shot of the falcon at the beginning of the scene when Rey is arriving at Tatooine the glow is much tamer (more realistic if that’s a thing?). I think the stronger glow looks more like the OT than ST, which certainly works.
Yeah, I’m still newish to cinema4D, but I think I can smooth the motion. I had to recreate the path from scratch so it’s a bit of a do-over, but I think the better model is worth it!
Also snooker has a new version that’s quite promising too so we’ll get this shot looking as good as possible!
Here’s a new pass! I downloaded a new 3D model of the falcon and brought it into cinema4D and recreated the flight path. After chatting with snooker, it turns out it’s the same model he’s using. I think his engines look better, though! So we’ll see what options we come up with!

Haha, Hal! Hadn’t thought of that about jumping to hyperspace in atmosphere. I don’t remember where you stood on the lightspeed skipping scene (probably heavily trimming?) but didn’t they jump in and out of a few atmospheres in that scene?
(Although I guess that was an emergency… and damaged the ship)
Here’s my take on the Falcon shot. Lots of tweaks I still need to do, but this works as a proof-of-concept, I hope.
Yes snooker yes!!! And I agree, you have a better model. If you’re using After Effects I can send you a null layer with my flight path. Or, if you like, you could send me your model and I’ll apply it. Either way!
Slight update to the end shot. I made the falcon darker, less thin, toned down the blue, and a couple of other small adjustments. Still have to things I want to tweak, though!
