The 60th Anniversary transfer was done with the scanning settings fubared. The setting was far too bright which made the lighter areas blow out in darker scenes, like the cummerbund. I have actually seen that Dumbo cel and his pants should be yellow and the cummerbund an aqua/cyan colour.

I think going back to film releases will be our only chance of a good colour reference for these movies.

This guy made a pile of mods to a Pioneer CLD-99  LD player, including a video output bypass that circumvents the circuits that (in their heyday) cleaned up the video signal before piping it out via RCA or S-Video. His mods apparently produce about the best video signal you can get out of a laserdisc player. I can't thoroughly explain it, but for all the tech-junkies, it might be worth a visit to his youtube page. If anyone could produce the best copy transfer off of the CAV GOUT discs, I'm sure he could. He's also on AVSForum here, if anyone wanted to petition him.

I've been scouting for a set of the SW LD's for awhile now.

that being said...

CAN'T Wait for 2.5! The blu-ray burner is hooked up and ready to go!

I have done these mods and more to an X9, it does improve the signal, but only a little.

16mm stock is fantastic, if you get an original 16mm print it is a gorgeous thing to behold and much better than Super8.

However a lot of 16mm prints are cheap reductions done from a battered old print illegally on the side in a lab. Like those DVDs made from people who videotape a movie in a cinema. It isn't the DVD medium that is the problem, it is the source. Same with 16mm, if you can find an original it is a beautiful thing, but the reduction dupes are often awful.

Yeah we had 1" and 2" machines at the TV station I used to work at, as well as U-Matics.

You are probably right Pug, oddly all the tapes I have been given to transfer from the mid to late 70s have been CV tapes! I have only ever been given one EIAJ tape to do. I was basing my suppositions on my very small sample size.

I'm surprised it would be recorded on either format, Star Wars wasn't on TV until the end of 1982, and even then only on pay per view. CBS didn't ait it until 1984.

It will be interesting just to see a recording from the time, ads and all. Let's hope it is on EIAJ.

I have a CV2100 and an AV 3600. To get 'tracking control' we dicker with the drum entrance and out guides, it is clunky but it works!

The super8 versions have the correct colour, correct gamma and no blur applied.

They were taken straight from the original Disney negative and graded to match the theatrical prints. The LDs etc. were taken from ?? and graded to suit CRT televisions and resolutions, so they have a vertical blur applied, totally different gamma and hue adjustment to suit NTSC standards and brightened. Hard to say what other changes may have been done in the telecine process, the lighting definitely is messed with.

The Super8 prints should also have about twice the resolution of a LD, but will have extra grain from the Super8 film itself. Find two copies and average them though and most of the Super8 grain will disappear and you will be left with just the original negative grain.

This guy just sold a Snow White and Pinocchio

If someone in the US wanted to ask the seller if he could pass on their contact to the buyers. I've done this before and often the seller is happy just to pass your email address to the buyer. You could then invite them here :)

I think we go to the films instead of trusting LDs or DVDs.

Derann had access to the Disney negatives to do their transfers, and the Super8 prints are gorgeous as a result and true to the originals as they were done before the computer age could get a look in.

I propose that I purchase the Super8 prints, scan them at 2K to preserve them, then resell them to be able to purchase another print etc. I would likely lose a bit each time, if nothing else just in shipping, handling and dollar fluctuations etc.

So I'm willing to do this, but if anyone would like to help out with costs, it would be much appreciated. Derann made a lot of these (for sale in Europe mostly, they didn't have US release rights) so we can put feelers out and may even be able to borrow prints or swap them etc.

What do you think?

Wrong thread for all of this really, but I am bidding on the tape version. The Super8 is the cineovision transfer which is only of interest for the mono soundtrack really.

The tape is most likely CV and probably recorded from a TV broadcast, but still could be interesting. It might be EAIJ Type 1, which could indicate a dupe from something else which would also be interesting. I have a CV deck, but not an EAIJ one, either way I'll pick it up if it doesn't go for much.

It is 1/2 inch, so as Puggo said, most lilkely one of the two.
