Another buyer wants the print, the owner has only given me until Sunday unfortunately. If it gets close, I can borrow the rest and hope that future donations come in.

Alternatively, can you ask the other buyer to borrow the print in exchange for a copy of the scans?

Not a chance unfortunately, I know who the other buyer is, and he is vehemently opposed to scanning prints. Oddly a lot of 35mm collectors are, perhaps they feel it will degrade the price of their collections?

This project is really coming along nicely, I don't get the impatience with it, given what is involved. I am looking forward to seeing eventual updates added in from other sources (unless Poita is working on his own restoration that will remain separate). The clean up work looks quite good, but I still think that there might be some colouring issues (high on the reds and yellows) that are resulting from the imaging method. Something to think about for afterwards anyways, as you/the team mentioned you had done some preliminary colour correction.

I am working on my own restoration, but that is from different film sources than the -1 team. There are Australian prints around, but I won't hijaak their thread, just wanted to clarify that film I am scanning is not currently part of the -1 team effort.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)

I meant apart from the problem of sharing a 20TB original scan, even making a '720P' version would take a lot of time and effort. It is incredibly slow working with, and recompressing 4K data and you need at least 30TB of HDDs in your computer just to be able to have the original scan in there, and enough working space to convert it to a lower res version. Or you have to do it in chunks. Either way it is a lot of work.

Doable, but a lot of work. Even just making those low res versions of the Super8 files took days.

I can confirm that they do indeed have two ESB faded 35mm prints, so this is not the  hoax you are looking for. Move along, move along...

I can also guarantee that there is a 4K scan of an ANH print coming one way or the other, there is an Australian print around, so no need to stress.

I am not part of the team, but I can verify that the ESB stuff they are showing is for real and not some faked stuff. How far along they are with ESB I have no idea.

I've tried to color correct the whole movie to match this purple/pink tint (that might be the original and theatrical one.)

Actually, I suspect that the VHS screeners predates the theatrical prints, and that it's the reason why it's so pink overall, that they hadn't finished the color timing. But only a 35mm print would prove this to be true or wrong.

Believe me poita, if I had the money I'd donate it.

There must be some other appreciation groups out there that have a bigger userbase where some interest could be drummed up. I worked on this film so have a special interest in it, but I am so far in the hole with SW restorations and other Disney stuff that I will literally have to sell a kid to put any more in :)

Part of the problem here is that a raw scan of a single film is over 20TB, i.e. over $700 worth of HDDs. Not easy to share or distribute.

As for entitlement, nobody *has* to share anything, especially something they may have sunk thousands of hours and thousands of dollars into, but I am glad when people do :)

poita is away for a while, so we won't know anything until after he is back and has the time to provide an update.

Correct, I can obtain the 35mm version for about a grand or so, but I have no money left. If anyone wants this preserved, they would need to go hither and find some funding to get the print purchased. I can do the rest from there, but I quite literally cannot afford the print.

Correct. The Hoth scenes are not blue. More from Reel 2:

Actually that is incorrect. I have viewed two non-faded 35mm prints of ESB in the past month, and Hoth is blue, and white and grey. The grade on the original 35mm release was all over the place. Some scenes are quite blue.

It would be impossible to know the correct colours from pink-faded prints, you can do a reasonable job restoring them so that they look 'good', but the original colour balance is unknowable without a non-faded print as reference. So it will look great, but may not be original timing.

These images look really good, great work on restoring colour from the lost channles,  but the colour will be somewhat arbitrary and not what it would have been at release.

Not to take anything away from what is great work, just letting any anal archivists know that the colours chosen for this release may not be all that close to the original timing.
