Original Trilogy Extended Edition (* unfinished project * - lots of deleted scene info*)
Time

Oh, and if you are doing any roto work, I have always found this an invaluable read.

http://grail.cs.washington.edu/projects/rotoscoping/roto.pdf

and if you prefer a non node-based system, even though it is old, Autodesk Combustion 2008 is fast and efficient for frame by frame painting/cloning.

There are a plethora of better tools than photoshop for this kind of work, that will make your life a truckload easier.

e.g. NukeX has a free trial (http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke-product-family/nukex/trial/) or a Personal Edition which is free, and lets you learn the product.

Grab some paint tutorials and give it a go.

e.g. http://vimeo.com/12758392

or jump to the Paint and Roto section here:

http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke-product-family/nuke/learn/

Grab the PLE version below whilst learning, then you can use the 15 day trial once you are up to speed :)

Info Wanted: a good preservation of 'From Star Wars to Jedi, The Making of a Saga'?

Captured it via a BlackMagicDesigns card and using a CrystallioII as the image processor, from a DiscLord VHD Player.

Silverwwook, not sure if there are any 3D VHD titles no on BD yet?

Yeah, we have the fastest ADSL2+ available here (24000/1000), and the upload speed is at best around 1000kbs, makes sending things of any size near impossible.

e.g. This is the result of the best case upload test. So, a GB of data takes about 3 hours to upload. So an 80GB LD capture takes 240 hours, or 10 days non-stop.

Upload TestResults

You uploaded 1 MB bytes in 9.69 seconds.

I think I have every Star Wars LD release, including a weird PAL master disc, The Keep, multiple THX1138s, Blade Runner in various versions, the SE discs, TPM, a bunch of Disney discs, I'll have to check and make a list.

But just the SW stuff and Blade Runner and THX would pretty much fill a drive.

I also have the OT on VHD discs, as well as Jaws 3D and a bunch of other VHD titles.

Could Disney, in theory, clean up OT negatives, scan them in 4K, 8K or whatever and then just put it in storage for foreseeable future?

They have already been scanned. Look at the changed scenes in the SE. Most of them are based on a scan of the OT, with SE crap *added*.

So Lucas was being a bit misleading, at the very least, the elements had been scanned prior to the real restoration work happening.

Try the 'spleen, if you've been invited.

First off, I am a huge fan of this project. Alas, I have been trying to get behind the velvet rope of The Spleen forum, but to no avail. When I could not get in, I tried teh Paradox and JDownloader. Unfortunately, after 4 attempts, my checksum never matches up. Also, Jdownloader is waaaaay bloated with spamware. I am so excited to watch, but I cannot seem to get in.

If an invite the Spleen is around, I would be extremely grateful. Thank you for the consideration.

It's on usenet, drop me a line if you need an account to use.

Enjoyed the blaster gag too, always nice to have an Easter egg in these previews.  Regarding the colors, I actually really like the new Bespin colors, but I wonder what the new color reference means for our perennial argument about Hoth colors... if I recall, your last Hoth samples were using the color-boosted GOUT reference.

As for Hoth colours, having seen a few ESB 35mm prints now, the snow colour ranges from bluish to white, to mildly purp;e depending on the scene. There is no real consistency to the colour grade on the snow sequences, the colour is all over the place on the original prints.

If I can get a hold of good condition discs, I can make a good rip out of it. On my last capture of ROTJ (non-SE), it was plagued with crosstalk, so I'm going to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Here was my idea for the process of preserving the discs: Capture in DV -> Remove Pulldown and convert to 23.976p -> Convert to Anamorphic 16:9 DV file -> Render to MPEG-2 & AVC.

You don't want to capture in DV, the colour compression is horrible.

No it doesn't unfortunately, but it includes parity drives in a RAID configuration.

I'd love to be able to afford a complete backup, but all 3 films, and multiple prints of ANH & ROTJ means an awful lot of drives.

Currently, best-case at the native resolution of the scanner, stored in OpenEXR, it is around 17TB per film (including a parity drive).

So around 4 or 5 x 4TB drives per print.

Unfortunately 4TB drives don't hold 4TB of data, you are left with less than 11TB from 3 x 4TB HDDs.

Then you need drives to be able to work on the cleanup, and store the finished results.

It turns out your need exactly one shitload(TM) of hard drives.
