Okay, it’s 1am here, I’ll post one or two and then head to bed.

I’m interested in how the colour looks in these shots on the bluray.
added old dude
No adjustment other than black levels.
As you wish…
Does anyone have any particular scenes they’d like to see?
It certainly has that old home video look about it. The skin tones are a bit yellow. but I enjoy the lush look of threepio.
It was fun watching along with the experiment!
BTW, if anyone is interested in Test Patterns, and has netflix, if you fire up netflix and hit “search” and type in “Test Patterns”, they have a really great test pattern channel.
The last reel is finishing up now. I’ll be transferring the files off (that alone takes 30 odd hours) and will be creating a ProRes proxy over the weekend.
I will have the version ready for checking early next week, thanks to the people who contacted me via PM, I will break up the reels so that you have one reel each to check. Please use the burned-in timecode to report any issues.
Thanks again for the help, I’d like to ensure we find any issues while the print is still available for re-scanning if needed. For the Pro-Res, how will you be encoding that? 12bit CINEON or another log curve?
For the proxy?
It is just a low resolution file for checking for lost frames or other problems, it is just a 720P 8bit Rec709 file to keep the file sizes down. For checking colour I am using the DPX files directly, or the ProRes 4444XQ 12bit file encoded from the DPX files, but at a TB per reel, the 4444XQ files would be overkill for checking for basic scanning problems.
I’m uploading you a new version now Althor. Sorry about that, it plays okay here in the quicktime player, but I encoded a new version anyway, it is uploading now.
Is it noticeably different to the Blu-ray?
Very interesting.
My only suggestion is to calibrate your screen with some test patterns or with a calibration meter, as everything you post is really quite dark overall.
The images do look CRT-like, but the gamma is way off (too dark).
Sounds interesting.
I have a few questions.
How does the video look? Is it mapping it onto a 3D surface, or using some other method?
Can you lock frame rates?
How fast is the branching?
50GB equates to a fairly expensive cartridge.

I have spent so many hours looking at full frame, that Star Wars no longer looks right in cinemascope to me any more. Everyone looks way too short and fat!
If someone would like to check the proxy scan for missing frames or other issues, please drop me a PM.
To stop a flood of requests, I’m limiting this to people who have contributed to the project, and have the time to do this. I need to check the scan for issues before I relinquish the prints, but I am too strapped for time right now, so any help appreciated.
You know, I think you are right.
They did utilise a lot of “found objects” during the production, and I think I have identified the source of the Bacta Tank.
It looks like a Black & Decker Spacemaster.
In just three minutes, we will all be enjoying hot jedi toasties!
Yay!
Whereabouts is the yellow?
I see a lot of magenta in the flashes, but not much yellow there.
I think I’m misunderstanding what part you are referring to. Is it the flashes or something else?
Cool. I posted the image from the print a page back or so.
The actual look isn’t quite as red as in the picture, the Bacta tank is more blue than it looks in that shot, but the background is quite red in reality, it is the same on the Super8 I have which is from the French release of ESB, so originally, the scene was nothing like the Blu-ray.
I have a Super8 of ESB, it looks the same as the 35mm, just not quite as intense colour.
PSB?
One reel to go…
Aww man, I never got back to that thread!
Well thanks to an un-named studio in LA, I got to pop a reel on for projection and snap a few photos. These photos are not colour balanced, but the colour in them isn’t drastically off.
That scene is in fact, quite red.
For reference, with the same camera settings:
Questions like this are why a relatively unfaded print is so valuable in preserving and presenting how the film was shown in 1980.
The screening will be late in the year, so definitely not too late.
Jeez those amounts are high, I’ll see if I can sort a US account.
