Idea & Help Wanted: Making of Star Wars 16mm Library Rental
Time

PDB said:

This could be an amazing resource, beside the Star Wars films they have 16mm copies of (including what others have mentioned):

Indy films

Close Encounters

Ghostbusters

2001

Star Trek 2

ET

Independence Day (eh)

War games

Edward Scissorhands

Shrek

Fantastic Voyage

Explorers

Short Circuit

Forbidden planet

Planet of the apes

Princess Bride

Dracula

North By Northwest

The Birds

39 Steps

And that's just from a few minutes of searching

A lot of those are available on 35mm for either loan or rent. If there is any real interest (i.e. people willing to cover the cost of rental and freight etc.) most of those could be sourced from 35mm instead of 16mm.

Star Wars 1977 releases on 35mm
Time

I'll put money it is just the exposure on the camera that took the photo of that tech strip, all the whites look blown out in that image.

Hey, do you happen to have any screens of another training shot, one of the ones where the lightsaber always looks white on the video transfers? Mike Verta has confirmed that it was clearly blue in every shot on theatrical prints in '77, and the bootleg videos from the original release seem to confirm this. But I'd love to see another screen from this "inferior" print if you have one.

Sure just post me which frame you want and I will dig it out.

The individual frames from this print aren't that bad, but I am not using it as the damage is extreme in the print, and the contrast isn't as good as some of the others. These frames have had cleanup done, but not colour adjustment, and the cleanup wasn't complete (you can still see plenty of damage in those two images), it is just as far as I got before moving on to better prints.

Star Wars 1977 releases on 35mm
Time

I had a few PMs about the cropping on the Tech image I posted in the neg1 thread.

I am cropping off the rounded corners etc. leaving just a little more in the image than the theatrical cropping, so, yes there is some cropping of the image, but a bit less than in the cinema.

The scans have the full frame including sprockets and soundtrack, so it is archived in its complete state, but I prefer to have the finished product closely match the 1977 theatrical presentation.

For reference, here are the two Team-1 images from their Before & After videos they recently posted, that show pretty much the full frame.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

The image I posted is uncorrected, and from a sub-par print, so don't take it as a reference. Team negative one recently did a 'before and after' of this scene, you might want to grab an image from there to use as a reference, as I think they said they corrected part of this sequence.

Anyway, I'll put more details in my own thread when I get through this round of scanning, didn't mean to clog things up here, just answering the question posited re the Tech.

Well, we're still waiting on the Tech Release you mentioned last year. But yes, it will be fun once we all get some releases going for Star Wars fans.

Team Negative1

 This Tech?

Since I posted about it, other prints came to light, I abandoned this as I got better prints to work from with less damage and better detail.

As mentioned in my thread, I am busy scanning prints at the moment, and am about a year away from having cleanup done and getting to a final image.

Info: 35mm print based restorations - massive set of prints for sale...

Well, yeah, if I could have found someone else to tackle what I was doing, I absolutely would have them do it instead!

Regardless though, feel free to make a case for a restoration, in detail and why you think it is important, and others might feel the same way and run with it, or you form a team with interested individuals and work on it as part of a group, or whatever.

But I'm always interested in hearing what films really need a preservation effort, and why.

No, but post them here, one at a time, take your time to write the post and detail which film, and why you think it would be a good restoration project (i.e. what is it specifically about the BD or DVD release that is no good/changed/could be better etc., and someone might agree and run with it.

Feel free to put any requests in this thread.

Some boards are very specific with placement of threads, to keep them easy to read and follow. Some moderators keep a very tight ship, so don't take it personally. It does make for a much easier to navigate site, but I also enjoy the more free flowing sites, they can be more fun,  though it does often make it hard to find information. There are all kinds out there.

I tend to ramble, and go off topic all the time, and post in the wrong place, so am quite used to my posts being removed without warning :)

Just wanted to check in that no one on the team mistakenly thought hiding their voices would protect them from the ire of Disney should the hammer ever come down. Nothing more, nothing less.

No dissuading here, I sincerely would love you guys, Disney, or anyone to restore all movies to an insane quality level and then we could all get some sleep.
