Does anyone know how or know where one can find the music only version of the Last Jedi soundtrack? I can’t for the life of me figure out how to use it in my edit.

And since it’s streaming, the sound would be lossy. So none of this is really ideal. Thanks, Disney.

I wouldn’t think this would really matter if you are just using it to smooth over some cut points.

It wouldn’t matter so much for that use, but I was actually hoping to make a score-only version of my fanedit. Not a huge deal, just a bit of a bummer.

After some research, the isolated score is only available through Disney’s Movies Anywhere streaming app, so the only way would be if someone could do a “stream rip” (is that even possible?) or an audio recording of the stream.

And since it’s streaming, the sound would be lossy. So none of this is really ideal. Thanks, Disney.

Hal, I know you excised the Phasma fight completely or had plans to do so. I did the same in my edit and the transition itself works well, but when I watched it back in the context of the entire film, their escape from the Dreadnaught felt empty and lacking to me.

Wondering if anyone here has had a similar feeling about that. I’m probably just overthinking it, though.

There were a few points made about the music and I have to agree, in TLJ it’s pretty weak. I’ve listened to it a few times and seen the movie just recently, but it’s not growing on me. The Resistance theme was bland in TFA and here it just feels overused. I would have really enjoyed new pieces for individual scenes like ESB. Rose gets a theme but it’s bleh. There are no Asteroid Field moments. Even scenes like the Throne Room would have been given a unique tune back in the old days - which is where all the best stuff here (Luke and Leia, TIE Fighter Attack) comes from.

No.

Yes?

I love John Williams and I always will, but his work is not what it once was. His 1980s work is probably the best that has ever been in the film industry, so admittedly its a bit unfair to have that expectation.

His TLJ score is very good, but as Mocata said it can’t hold a candle to his OT stuff.

Well fine but Mocata said it’s “pretty weak.”

I always did place pretty low in reading comprehension.

I’m late to the party here… but again, regarding Canto Bight…

Does anyone else have a problem with the whole “Rose hates rich people” element? Frankly, I would like to take some of the “real world” politics out of that sequence. I get it, war profiteering is bad, but do we really need a conversation about it in Star Wars?

I’d rather cut out that sequence, and never have Rose mention it.

I second this. It’s oddly detracting from a subplot that already detracts from the movie itself. “Political commentary,” if you want to call it that, feels cheap when it doesn’t say anything genuinely controversial or bold.

Yes. I’m generally not averse to political commentary in film if it’s done subtly or cleverly woven into the story. TLJ has the most ham-fisted political commentary I’ve seen in recent memory.

Unfortunately removing it also removes almost any further character development for Rose, which is why I left some of it my edit. I did remove the “Now it’s worth it” line, though. That was the worst.

Rey is by far the most disappointing thing in the ST to me. DSIII is a close second.

Devil’s avocado!

While the character of Rey is a bit underwritten and a bit too perfect, Daisy Ridley is so charismatic and her performance is probably my favorite aspect of the sequel trilogy.

How the character of Finn was “expanded upon” in TLJ is probably my most disappointing aspect. I think a big missed opportunity.

A minor continuity error I noticed is when Poe is speaking with Holdo for the first time. She says “It’s commander right? Wasn’t it Leia’s last official act of command to demote you? For your Dreadnought plan?”, but that wasn’t Leia’s last official act of command. Right before the bridge explodes she orders The Raddus to stay out of range of the First Order’s barrage and to have maximum rear shields or something like that. I know it could be explained that Holdo just forgot, but the order that’s keeping everyone alive seems like a pretty massive point to forget.

That line was especially annoying. A good leader shouldn’t be passive aggressive.

It’s a great line. You’re supposed to be somewhat skeptical of Holdo at first. And Poe was trying to pull a fast one by introducing himself as commander.

I feel like there could have been a better way of doing that. Especially since we’re supposed to think she was right the whole way through by the end.

I feel like there could have been a better actress to play the part. I don’t find Laura Dern to be terribly convincing or engaging in much of anything she’s done.

For me personally, I’ll remember this as the “Defeminized Edit II: No ‘Admiral Purple Hair’ Edit (even though it’s easier/quicker to type ‘Holdo’)” - with the tag-line of ‘only a man can sacrifice himself - or sacrifice a woman to the dark side’ edit (read in one of those deep gravelly voices that did the 80’s film voiceover trailers).

I mean it does say almost exactly that in the thread OP:
“This edit was originally created as an HD 2.0 version of the infamous Defeminized edit…”

So I guess that’s fair.

Things happen between movies Adywan. Poe is right next to the girl who helped save his BB unit along with his new best pal Finn but he would wait until the ending of the next movie to say “oh, thanks by the way. Rey, right ?” Doesn’t make any sense. Not a huge continuity issue, but still it felt weird and forced at the end of TLJ.

In this specific case nothing could’ve happened between them between the movies. Maybe between scenes, but not necessarily. I see your point though.

Yeah, this is something the audience can assume happened off-camera. To me it just feels odd for two of our principal characters to introduce themselves to eachother for the first time after two full movies.

This does not seem like a workable option to me, because the character of DJ will return in Episode 9

Sounds like you know something we don’t, Hal 😉

My two cents: I cut out a lot of the egregious CG creatures in the casino, cut out the slave children completely and shortened the fathier chase by quite a bit. I also cut out Rose’s “Now it’s worth it” line.

That really works for me, but it all comes down to personal preference I suppose.

I think I’m going to have to kill my edit. My editing skills are pretty bad and it looks like most of what I want done is going to get done somewhere. Not many seem to want to remove Phasma, though.

I didn’t remove her completely, but I axed the Finn v. Phasma fight at least. It was pretty easy.

No Phasma Fight

Oh gosh, that last shot would be on my cutlist too.

And if you cut the fight, might I suggest you try to cut her completely? It’s super easy to do. ^_^ You do that and yours might be the edit I go to.

Haha, not a fan of Snoke’s dead face, huh?

I’ll probably play with removing Phasma completely and see if I can make it work seamlessly. If there’s no fight, then there’s little reason for her to be there at all.

I’m leaving the ending alone; to me it would be a mistake to remove it in a fan edit. But it’s just MHO.

Here are two clips required in order to remove BB8 with the [Rich Evans] AT-ST [/Rich Evans]. The only problem, apart from potential less-than-perfect editing, is that we do not see BB8 explicitly rejoin our heroes until Poe cuddles him on Crait. Might be okay, though. I took a lead from Buzzclub (the German TLJ edit thread guy).

Just a small criticism of Phasma 2. The audio crossfade is a little heavy from when they’re running to the shuttle to when they blast out of the shuttle bay and the music gets “mushy”. I did a quick cross-fade right on the cut and the score flows more smoothly I think:

Shuttle escape

Also, re: the ending. I don’t really see any merit in swapping the order of scenes, especially since up to this point every film has had a final scene without any (English) dialogue.

Every film has also had an ending involving the main characters 😉

Leia only has 15 seconds of screen time in Rogue One, she’s no main character.

True. And that’s why Rogue One’s ending (among other things) didn’t work at all for me.
