STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

Finally seen it. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first 3 seasons, they were OK but much worse than Clone Wars, but the 4th season was the best one. And the last bunch of episodes, absolutely beautiful.

I have a non-spoiler question - is the bearded guy in Return of the Jedi actually Rex?
Also it’s pretty obvious what will the new show be about 😃 I can’t wait!

There’s something about Filoni’s Star Wars sensibility that rubs me the wrong way. Having watched Rebels, it feels remarkably sterile, existing in this purgatory between epic adventure and serialized drama.

Before I have seen the 4th season of Rebels, I would agree with you. But after finally having the chance to see the (almost complete) 4th season, I think that it’s getting better and better. And don’t forget - he is the main reason why Clone Wars was as good as possible.

I said that as a joke when George said he’s making Kennedy a new head of the company. Now, after seeing the 3 movies she is responsible for, I say absolutely seriously “please, let Kennedy take care of the business side of things but make Filoni the creative boss”. She was a great producer, and a good business woman, but please give the franchise to the hands of a guy with a vision.

It’s an OK movie, maybe even above average, the villain is surely above the MCU standards, the story is average, and most of the CGI effects are just horrible. To be honest I have seen it last week and if you asked me about any plot details, I would have problems remembering them, similar to highly forgettable movies like Age of Ultron or the Thor sequels. The fact that a group of people who doesn’t in reality care about superhero movies is trying to make it political, is just sad. It’s just a superhero movie

I’m really proud this thread isn’t a giant bitch session about how Discovery Changed Things Now It Sucks. We may be growing up as a forum.

Oh, never mind.

Didn’t Trek already change things enough times and disappoint enough times that STD doesn’t move the scale that much?

Actually not really. They have done some minor makeup changes through the years, but they were surprisingly pretty consistent over the years, with not really that many inconsistencies.

International Audio (including Voice-Over Translations)
Time

Oh God, I remember that version 😃 One of the bootleg VHS tapes which I had before the first official VHS release. I’m glad that the times of voiceover dubs is long gone and I hope it will never come back.

History? Well that would need a bigger history lesson. Short version - we (Czechoslovakia) used to be a typical communist country, a satellite of the USSR. Between the end of the second world war and 1968 we were officially a communist country, but at the same time we were pretty “open”, In 1968 we were invaded, sorry, I meant “rescued from the contrarevolution” by our friends (mostly Soviets) who were so kind and left her “protective armed forces” in our country to steal our property and rape our women, sorry I meant “to protect us”. Our regime changed into a full tyranny, but started to be more open during the 80’s, thanks to Gorbi’s perestroika. From a cultural point of view it meant that suddenly we could watch ideologically correct American movies, but only if they were approved by a censorship commission. For example we could watch Raiders of the Lost Ark, because Indy fought the Nazis, but at the same time every, and I mean EVERY religious reference was taken out, which left us with a totally nonsensical plot, but at the same time we couldn’t watch movies like Star Wars, I guess the censors didn’t like a story about a group of rebels fighting a dictatorship. In the late 80’s I had a pretty nice collection of bootleg VHS tapes of American movies, and all of them had the voiceover, so called “rychlodabing”, usually done by one person only, or one man doing all men characters and one woman doing all women characters. This was kind of “semi-legal”, I mean it was pretty often done by people who already were or later became known actors but you won’t find any information about that work on their official bios.
Communism fell (at least officially) in November 1989, and we started to transform to capitalism (and to splitting into 2 countries in 1993), which means that first private TV stations appeared. These TV stations needed stuff to air, so they bought cheap “western” movies and TV shows and because they needed it quickly, they pretty often used “rychlodabing”, this was of course official and the era was something like 1990-1995 if I remember correctly. Because most of the people hated it, the TV stations started to do “proper” dubbing very soon, it was pretty normal to see the same movie first with the voiceover dub and 6 months - 1 year later the same movie on the same station with a normal dub.
By the way dubbing was in 90’s normal on VHS tapes, but not included on DVDs of the same movies, I think the first Star Wars release with czech and slovak dubs was the release of ROTJ.

And yes, there are different fora where people search for these voiceover dubs, but only as a historical curiosity

Things that you would like to see in Star Wars that have not happened
Time

I’d love to see a Star Wars story, which doesn’t include or even reference

 • any Skywalker
 • any Kenobi
 • Darth Vader or any cheap imitation like Kylo Ren
 • Emperor Palpatine or any cheap imitation like Snoke
 • Death Star or Death Star II or any cheap imitation like the Starkiller base
 • any left wing or right wing agenda, make it just a good old “good vs evil” story

Out of the 9 canon live action Star Wars movies we have seen so far,

 • 8 movies had a Skywalker
 • 6 had a Death Star or a similar “ball of death”
 • 9 had Darth Vader or a cheap imitation of Darth Vader
 • 6 had Yoda

I want something completely different, for example a historical piece about the fight between the Jedi and the Sith and the formation of the Republic, or go to the far future. Or do some crazy time travel story. Or some story where somebody from their universe ends up on Earth. Or some small personal story about a group of Clone Troopers during the clone wars, you could even take many of the cartoon multi-part arcs and adapt them into great movies. Just do something DIFFERENT and stop remaking and referencing the original trilogy

Hey Harmy, any chance you would (could) restore the very first / opening day or whatever we call it version of Star Wars in 720p? The one which has the differently composited 3 optical shots and closing credits? If it’s actually possible, since the only source is probably the laserdiscs

Could you go into more detail about this? I’m mildly startled that I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. 😃

I’m talking about the very early 77 version, check these threads

Yotsuya did a SD restoration : http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Yotsuyas-Saga-Preservation-and-Restoration/id/55257

I was wondering if there is a chance that the few scenes could be re-done or upscaled.
