The Mono Mix Restoration Project (Released)
Time
Linear PCM is uncompressed (lossless) digital audio, the same format used on CDs and most studio masters. It can be sampled at 48 or 96 kHz with 16, 20, or 24 bits/sample. (Audio CD is limited to 44.1 kHz at 16 bits.) There can be from 1 to 8 channels. The maximum bit rate is 6.144 Mbps, which limits sample rates and bit sizes when there are 5 or more channels. It's generally felt that the 120 dB dynamic range of 20 bits combined with a frequency response of around 22,000 Hz from 48 kHz sampling is adequate for high-fidelity sound reproduction. However, additional bits and higher sampling rates are useful in audiophile applications, studio work, noise shaping, advanced digital processing, and three-dimensional sound field reproduction. DVD players are required to support all the variations of LPCM, but many subsample 96 kHz down to 48 kHz, and some may not use all 20 or 24 bits. The signal provided on the digital output for external digital-to-analog converters may be limited to less than 96 kHz and less than 24 bits.

Dolby Digital is multi-channel digital audio, using lossy AC-3 coding technology from PCM source with a sample rate of 48 kHz at up to 24 bits. The bitrate is 64 kbps to 448 kbps, with 384 or 448 being the normal rate for 5.1 channels and 192 being the typical rate for stereo (with or without surround encoding). (Most Dolby Digital decoders support up to 640 kbps, so non-standard discs with 640 kbps tracks play on many players.) The channel combinations are (front/surround): 1/0, 1+1/0 (dual mono), 2/0, 3/0, 2/1, 3/1, 2/2, and 3/2. The LFE channel is optional with all 8 combinations. For details see ATSC document A/52 <www.atsc.org/document.html>. Dolby Digital is the format used for audio tracks on almost all DVDs.

MPEG audio is multi-channel digital audio, using lossy compression from original PCM format with sample rate of 48 kHz at 16 or 20 bits. Both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats are supported. The variable bit rate is 32 kbps to 912 kbps, with 384 being the normal average rate. MPEG-1 is limited to 384 kbps. Channel combinations are (front/surround): 1/0, 2/0, 2/1, 2/2, 3/0, 3/1, 3/2, and 5/2. The LFE channel is optional with all combinations. The 7.1 channel format adds left-center and right-center channels, but is rare for home use. MPEG-2 surround channels are in an extension stream matrixed onto the MPEG-1 stereo channels, which makes MPEG-2 audio backwards compatible with MPEG-1 hardware (an MPEG-1 system will only see the two stereo channels.) MPEG Layer 3 (MP3) and MPEG-2 AAC (also known as NBC or unmatrix) are not supported by the DVD-Video standard. MPEG audio is not used much on DVDs, although some inexpensive DVD recording software programs use MPEG audio, even on NTSC discs, which goes against the DVD standard and is not supported by all NTSC players.

The Mono Mix Restoration Project (Released)
Time
Why do you think mono PCM is not legal audio format for DVD ??????????

A DVD-Video disc can have up to 8 audio tracks (streams) associated with each video track (or each video angle). Each audio track can be in one of three formats:

* Dolby Digital (AC-3): 1 to 5.1 channels
* MPEG-2 audio: 1 to 5.1 or 7.1 channels
* PCM: 1 to 8 channels.

as far as I know, only DTS is not officially supported.
BTW I was trying to say that I want the cleaned-up mix
Or could you at least upload your synched PAL AC3 to some normal server ? I'm online from a cyber cafe so I can't wait 4 hours to download the file. Quicksharing.com is INCREDIBBLY slow (started with 200kbps, but went to 10kbps after a while !)

Anywhere to keep up on news, or gossip about the archival editions coming?
Time
I would be happy if they would release it the same way as Alien Quadrilogy - that means on every film disc 2 versions of the film - the theatrical cut + the "director's cut", both wonderfully remastered, plus a bonus disc for every movie full of making-of documentaries, scripts, photos and most important - ALL DELETED SCENES. Also some bonus disc with all classic documentaries. Perhaps maybe discs with the Holiday special, the Ewok movies and all the animated shows. But I'm afraid this will happen only in my dreams

What sound mixes are on the 2006 DVDs ?
Time
Thanks again
My project ? Star Wars Theatrical Hexalogy. Dual-layered anamorphic PAL theatrical versions of the movies based on the officially released DVDs including all original soundmixes (+ a slovak or czech mix for myself). I have a first version of Episodes I, III and IV allready ready, now I'm fixing small errors and when ready, I'll continue with other movies. BTW my first version of Star Wars (aka ANH) has 5 soundmixes, but on a single-layer disc, so you can imagine, how it looks and why I'm reworking it to dual-layer versions

I'm not a sound mix expert, so I'd like to ask you if you bothered to research which mix did they use. I've checked Star Wars only (A New Hope for the kids) and all I know is that 3PO's line is NOT there ("The tractor beam is coupled to the reator...), which means that it's the theatrical 1977 stereo mix OR the 1993 remix (that would make the sound coming from the same masters as the video).
I don't know anything about ESB or ROTJ.
Any ideas ?

Info & Info Wanted: Star Trek Theatrical versions - question
Time
Wow, so many trekkies here

They goofed on the TMP movie, the Director's Edition was the only dvd. Do you have the link to the article? I gave up trying to dig it up.
As I see they are currently re-designing the whole website, that can be the problem. But I probably still have somewhere the articles (I downloaded them maybe a year ago - oops, it's actually 2 years ago now ), so if you want them, I can search for them.

EDIT: By the way, I was searching out threads, for the next reply, and I noticed you asked about "The Cage", long long ago. It was released on DVD. Both the color and the color/B&W versions are on the last volume of the 2-episode-per-disc DVD set. Volume 40. I'm pretty sure its in the 3rd Season Box Set, too.

You are slightly right, it was a loooooooooooooooooooooong time ago, but I was actually searching for the complete show aired between season 1 and season 2 of the Next Generation, it had some behind-the-scenes footage plus a hybrid B&W/color version of The Cage, I've seen it only once on SAT 1 and it's title backtranslated from german was something like From one generation to another, it was hosted by Patrick Stewart. Do you know if it was released on some "normal" format ? (NOT laserdisc or something similar, laserdisc is something completely unknown in this part of Europe).
Also, the original series was never released here, and I don't want to buy it from some other country, because it would have no (usable) subtitles and my english is not that good (as you probably noticed from my posts )

You mean the X-Mas as in Futurama? Heh. Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year.
Well, that's funny, I was actually watching that episode of Futurama the day you wrote this

Happy New Year friends.

I believe the 2-disc set of the director's cut actually includes the original versions of scenes as bonus amterial on disc two. Assuming all of it's on there, it shouldn't be hard to edit together.

Yes, you're right. That's exactly what I was planning to do, that's why I have asked the question if anybody else did it allready (I don't want to waste my time with creating something what allready exists).

I will be running a PIF of the version that CW does once I get a copy of it. If anyone wants to join in on the chain, let me know after I get the dvd.

I guess with "PIF" you don't mean the windows shortcut for dos programs Is it the system "I'll send you it for free if you send it for free to someone else" ? If yes, I would be interested.

I seem to remember reading that there was a line of dialouge not present on the First Contact DVD that was heard in the theatre, the line was from Kelsey Grammer as Captain Bateson of the USS Bozeman responding to Picard's order of attack, this was widely regarded as not being true until the line turned up in the HD version.

This can be the truth, I have a DVD with the theatrical version of "First Contact" and it is approx. one minute shorter then the 2disc version. But inclusion of only one line can not be responseable for an extra minute, can it ?

PAL version is done.

Heh ? Did I miss something ? Or better said : how can I get a copy ?

ST I, TMP, only had the Director's Edition DVD release.

I was referring to a dvdtown.com article, which says that the 1. release was the theatrical, but as I wrote, the single-disc editions were not released here.
Hm, the HD files were an serious offer :-) ?

Don't you guys know if someone re-created the theatrical version of ST6 or at least what were the changes between theatrical and home video veersions ?

Info & Info Wanted: Star Trek Theatrical versions - question
Time

I’ve just bought all 10 double-DVD versions of all Star Trek movies and I was surprised, that (at least) the movies 1,2, and 6 are NOT the theatrical versions.
I like the “new” versions of these movies, but I would also like to have the original unaltered theatrical versions of these movies. I’ve read somewhere, that parts 1 & 2 where released a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away … ) on single-disc editions, but these were NOT released here 😦
A couple of questions :

  1. Does anybody here have the single-disc editions ? Do they contain really the theatrical version ? If yes, are they still “available” somewhere ?
  2. Was ST6 also released in it’s theatrical version ? Because even the VHS tape I’ve bought AGES ago (around 1993 ? ) has the “special edition” with the alternate ending (the assassin was not a Klingon, but “Odo”) and added scenes (“Klingons have no tear ducts”). The sleave of the DVD actually does NOT note that it’s not the theatrical version.
  3. Are there also other “special editions” on the 2DVD sets, or are movies 3,4,5,7,9,10 the theatrical versions ? Because I didn’t note any changes.
  4. If the theatrical versions of some of these movies were NOT released, are there some “restoration projects” going on ?
    Thanks

my memory isn't that bad, is it? (in SW '77 - Luke misses with the grappling hook?)
Time
OK, maybe I'm also crazy , but ...
When I was young, I have seen at least 5 different versions of Star Wars. My first Star Wars source was a probably 50th generation copy of a terribly washed-out pan&scan version with english audio with polish voice-over and russian subtitles. It was in the time when I didn't know english, polish or russian so I didn't undersand a word but I loved the movie :-) Later, I have seen several times on PRO7 a german version, I loved the names Ce Drei Pe O and Er Zwo De Zwo :-) and btw it was in the time when I didn't understand german :-) . Then in the late 80's / early 90's I have seen several times a czech version (finally a language I understand at least slightly :-) ) and I had also an official P&S VHS, which I can't find :-( . Then of course I have seen the Special Edition in cinema, TV and VHS and I have also the offical DVD.

I have NEVER heard the Radio Show, I have NEVER read the comic book and I have read the novell last year for the first time. That's only for those of you, who think that my memories can come from there.

I remember these things (from unknown version/s) :

The "hook & bridge" sequence was like this - Luke damaged the controls, shot the hook, but missed. Then he was kissed by Leia for "inspiration" and the rest was the same (second try, second kiss). I always thought it is a good joke and a great example what a young man can do, whan he's kissed by a beautifull girl :-)

Luke meets Biggs in the hangar. Really, for me it was always there. Since 97 I read everywhere that this scene was added back to the special edition and I never understood what the hell are these people talking about, untill I saw the EditDroid bootleg about 2-3 years ago and I was shocked that the scene is not there !

Another but shorter scene - the rebel meeting, after "that's impossible even 4 a computer" Luke says that hee used to shoot wamp rats at home, and they don't have 2 meters . THEN he looks at the guy, gives him his hand a says "Luke Skywalker", the other guy shakes his hand and says "Wedge Antilles". The rest is the same.

Help Wanted: Original subtitles
Time

Hi, does anybody have screenshots of the Alien languages used for all SW movies ? That means for eaxample one BMP/JPG for one line of text . I don’t care about the quality of the background or the quality of the subtitles. I am creating a theatrical hexalogy of Star Wars (Episodes 1 and 3 are done), but to make it the “true theatrical versions” I want to use also the correct font.
Please help if you can, thanks.

Adding an audio track to a DVD?
Time
I think both Japan and USA use NTSC, right ? The only difference should be the region code...

1) Use some ripping tool (e.g. DVDDecrypter, DVDFabDecrypter ...) to copy BOTH DVDs to your harddisk.
2) Use PGCDemux to demultiplex both movies to elementary streams and let it also create a chapters.txt file and a log file. (Of course, use different directories for different films!)
3) Now use IfoEdit's "Author new DVD" feature to create a DVD which will have the streams you want - that means use the video stream from the japan version, use all the audio streams from the Japan version which you WANT (skip all you don't want) and add the wished audio stream from the US version, and if you want you can also add subtitles the same way. Plese note- if the audio streams were originally multiplexed with some delay, don't forget to write the delay to the left part of the IfoEdit window, you can read the values from the log files created by PGCDemux. Also load the chapter start frames from the chapter file created by PGCDemux. When you put all your wished streams (with correct delays) to the IfoEdit authoring window, simply select a new output directory and click on Author button.
4) If you don't want menus, you are done. If you want the original menus, open in VobBlanker the DVD from which you want to take the menus (I guess it will be the american DVD). Find the PGC which represents the movie (search for the correct time if you're not sure and use the preview window) and click the Replace button on the right, in the window which appears select the movie IFO file (probably VTS_01_0.IFO) from the directory, which contains the DVD you have created in step 3 with IfoEdit. If VobBlanker throughs an error message (like new audio stream not found in the original PGC or something like that) simply click OK, we'll repair it later. Now I would recomend to go through ALL the PGCs and cells in the DVD and blank all the stuff you don't want to have on your disc, I usually do this to remove the Warning screens and trailers for other movies (or replace animated scene selection menus with still menus)and stuff like that, but this step is optional. When you're done, just select a new output directory and click Process button.
5) If VobBlanker wrote an error about audio streams in the previous step, open the newly created DVD in PGCEdit. Click OK on every message which might appear and when the scanning is finished, close the scanning window. Now search for the main movie in the left column (look for the time and use the preview window - the "`" key or the eye icon). Right click the main movie PGC and choose "Domain stream atributes". Check if all streams are listed. If some streams don't have the 2-letter language code written, write it. If you don't see your added audio stream there, but only the audio stream from the original DVD, close this window and double click the main window PGC. You will get a big window from which only the audio stream list is currently interesting for us. You should see something like a column with numbers, simply click the row under the last row with some number and with the slider select the number of the stream you have added , eg if you added your stream as third, it will have number 2 (the numbers start from 0), so select number 2. Click OK for the message and now go again to domain stream atributes. It should show you an error, just click OK and PGCDemux will fix it. Now you should have all your audio streams listed, probably you'll have to write the language code to it, if yes, do it.
Now, you can (if you want) to correct the buttons. For example if you have thrown out some of the original audio, you will probably want to hide the button which activates that language, or if you have blanked some pgcs in VobBlanker you should also remove from the menus buttons, which were leading to them. PGCEdit has a powerfull menu editor, it is activated via CTRL-M or right-clicking and selecting edit menu buttons. There are several methods how to remove a button, I recomend to hide and jump to undeleted button, or how is it called, just play with it if you want.
Save the DVD.

Wow, this section really needs screenshots, but I hope you understand what I was trying to write.
6) If the resulting DVD is too big for a standard DVD5 and you don't want to use a dual-layer DVD, open the resulting DVD in DVDShrink. When you archive the DVD, please select in the options Deep Analysis and the thing under it (adaptive error compensation ?) . This will take MUCH longer, but will give you best posible video quality.
7) Play The resulting DVD in some software player, which can read DVDs from directories - WinDVD, PowerDVD... If you didn't get some commercial DVD player to your DVD drive, you can use VideoLAN, but leave this only a your last hope, because it has some weird behaviour on some DVDs.
8) If the final DVD behavies as expected, open it in PGCEdit, and use it to create a ISO file (it's somewhere in the menu, search). When your ISO file is ready, run ISOBurn (you can also start it from PGCEdit) and burn the ISO file.
If you don't want to make the ISO file, you can burn the directory with the final DVD with Nero, but Nero is not free and ISOBurn is :-) and ISOburn is reported to have better burning results.
9) Watch the DVD on your desktop player before deleting the files from your disk !

So, this really needs screenshots, but I hope you'll understand it. If no, feel free to ask.

That were questions 1 and 2.
Question 3&5 : the answer is I DON'T KNOW, sorry. I don't even know how a laser disc looks like :-)
Question 4 : capturing from VHS - there is no general answer, it really depends on your PC and VCR. How is the VCR connected to your TV ? Is it possible to connect it the same way to your computer ? The most primitive (and cheapest) method is to buy a TV tuner, connect the VCR to your TV, connect your TV to your TV Tuner and in your capturing software try to find the VCR signal as a new chanel. It works 100%, but the results are not the best. Much better way would be to connect your VCR directly with your PC but it;s impossible for me to write which exact cables do you need, if I didn't see your hardare. But simply you have to connect video output from your VCR to the video input in your capture card (or at least a TV tuner), the same goes for audio.

Question 6 : One word only - google.
Question 7 : Of course, it's illegal. But who cares ? :-) Honestly, if you'll keep it for your self and not sell it on eBay or sth. you don't have to be afraid.

Hope that helps you.

Color-correcting
Time
Hi guys, I'm trying to color-correct the "Making OF Star Wars " documentary, my source is terribly green.
I've tried to use the AviSynth function RGBAdjust, but when I lower the green level, the video is suddenly violet :-(
Any ideas how to do it the right way ? It doesn't have to be AviSynth, of course.

Your aspect ratio is way off...nasty interlaced noise on the opening logo, and the stars have heavy ghosting, like your running a sharpening filter way too high....other than that they're O.K.

Yes, I asked, it's just a temporary video track, so I need other people's opinions. That interlacing stuff is really a problem, when I put the EditDroid video into AviSynth, the script's fps is 23.976 instead of 29.970, cce creates also an mpg with 23.976fps ans when I put it in DVDLabPro, it creates an 2:3 pulldown which screws up the video unbelievebly. F*ing NTSC ! Never had these kind of problems with PAL, where the fps is always 25. The stars - I was also thinking they're too sharp, thanks for confirming it.

Aspect ratio - anybody knows how tall should the black bars be ? I did it according to ADM's guide and it looks like that.

If you want to know what I think - some people just can't wait 3 months. You'll be able to do your own time-corrected audio add-ons then (I say time corrected, but what I mean is that the video/audio is in sync all the way through the movie; as it may be slightly off compared to laserdisc).

No, I won't. These *holes are NOT releasing the new discs in Slovakia because LucasFilm or who didn't allow to put a czech sound mix. And it's too expensive for me to buy it from US, it's actually one of the reasons I'm doing it.

Thanks about the info about the 6track mix, if I don't get more detailed information I'll just do a 5.1 "remix" of the stereo mix. So all I need now is the stereo mix

ROTE doesn't have "a bit better quality", it has MUCH better quality (I know what I'm talking about, I've compared the scenes in 1600% zoom).I just hope I will live enough long to get an official Lucasfilm DVD with ALL the cut scenes

And what about the subtitles ? Is there no project with english subtitles ?

Help Wanted: with my small OT preservation project ...
Time

Hello friends, I’ve just started to do something which I wanted to do since I’ve got the EditDroid Discs. The plan was originally to simply multiplex the better video from the second release with all the audio mixes from the first release, but the more time I’m spending on it, the better I want to do it.

So what should it be ?
Disc 1 : The recreation of the 1977 movie - that means the original crawl (non-“episode IV”), plus the mono mix, the original stereo mix + a 5.1 mix (which would be my attempt to recreate the original 6 track mix) + isolated score mix. Video would be a combination of the new EditDroid release + Empire of Dreams. It will also the Mark Hamill TV intro & outro (probably selectable).

Disc 2 : A “repaired” version of the Special Edition - correct lightsabres, removed garbage mattes, corrected editorial misstakes… This one will also have a new commentary mix created from the official one and a lot of interviews.

Disc 3 : The Documentaries - devided in 3 sections - Pre-production, production & post-production (exactly as the Alien Quadrology bonus discs) with brand new documentaries created by me from many sources, all scripts as slideshows (Alien Quadrology owners understand), and of course the Deleted Scenes in post-production section (all I can find, not just the common “Bigs scenes”).

Disc 4 : Star Wars Legacy - the holliday special, the making of star wars as told by c3po & r2d2, the muppets show …

I hope I’ll make it till christmas

But I need help:

  1. The opening crawl - has anybody this ? The EditDroid discs have a recreated crawl, which doesn’t look right compared to Empire Of Dreams I tried to combine the incomplete crawl from EOD with the EditDroid crawl, but you can guess how it looks like. Does anybody have the original crawl or at least a better-than-EditDroid looking recreation ?

  2. The sound mixes - I thougt that at least one of the EditDroid discs will have the original stereo mix but some trustable people here claim they don’t . I’ve read here that Neil has the TRUE theatrical stereo mix and many of you also. Can somebody upload just the audio somewhere ? I mean somewhere like e.g. rapidshare or mail , because I’m not getting online from home, so bittorent or usenet are not an oppinion for me. I’ve read Neil made a flac file - would be ideal, or maybe even mp3.

And what about the 6-track mix ? Any ideas ? The only thing I know is that it disn’t have the “The tractor beam is coupled to…” line and that is definitely not enough for recreating the mix !

  1. Deleted scenes - I have only Deleted Magic and Return Of The Ewok, does anybody have some more scenes ?

  2. English subtitles - I really need well-timed English subtitles. I’m too lazy to rip it from the official DVD and search what has been added to SE .

So please if you can help me, I will think of you when this project is done
