ILM - Disney+ 6 part documentary series
Time

Yeah hopefully they do more with the 90’s and 2000’s era. The 1st season seemed to focusing on a 20 year timespans ealy/mib 70’s to early/mid 90’s. With a teaser on the future of ILM. So the next season should be Mid 90’s to 2010’s.

We already know they officially still have the original elements of the original effects for the different catalog of movies.

For this season I’d love to see how they made the water effect for that 100foot wave for “The Perfect Storm” in 2000.

The new 4K02 35mm preservation project is started now (in the other forums) with print in hand and all stuff set to go when ready. So far it has a bit under 50% funding covered to get the scan and storage.

I can confirm over at the other forums. Donations is needed. The Scanning has been covered but they still needs funding for Hard drive storage and Gas to get it to the scanner.

“Here’s a few screenshots of Light & Magic vs SSE. I simply did a screen recording of the documentary (using Quicktime) of the shots I wanted to get screen grabs from. Probably not as high-quality as other ways, but you still get the idea that they are different sources. The Silver Screen Edition cleaned up many or the marks and dirt that are so apparent on the documentary”

Well, I’m watching the final episode now and I can tell you they are 100% for sure using the fan-made Jurassic.Park.1993.35mm.1080p.Cinema.DTS.v2.0 release - I compared it and it’s pixel-for-pixel exactly the same, except they graded it a tiny bit more towards teal.

Wow I don’t know if I should say that’s awesome or what. So a scan from fans but a bit more teal. Interesting.👍

Some of the dirt and scratches are identical, but some aren’t. The similar spots are probably just specks from compositing though, which of course would be the same no matter the scan. The D+ version seems to be a tiny bit less cropped as well.

I hope we get more screenshots soon. I need to figure how to do screenshots.

Just goes to show that they “still” have sources of their own. And they shouldn’t butcher it with DNR or stylized colors.

"Think they’re referring to this interview. He doesn’t necessarily specify which version.

https://lwlies.com/interviews/gareth-edwards-rogue-one-a-star-wars-story/

“On day one, we were in Lucasfilm in San Francisco with Industrial Light and Magic and John Knoll, our supervisor, he said that they’ve got a brand new 4K restoration print of A New Hope – it had literally just been finished. He suggested we sit and watch it. Obviously, I was up for that. Me, the writer, lots of the story people and John all sat down, we all had our little notepads, we were all ready for this. I’ll add that I’ve seen A New Hope hundreds of times. So I was sat there, ready to take notes and really delve under the surface of the film. You have the Fox fanfare, then scrolling text with ‘A long time ago…’, and then the main music begins. Next thing we knew it had ended, and we looked around to one another and just thought – shit, we didn’t take any notes. You can’t watch it without getting carried away. It’s really hard to get into an analytical filmmaker headspace with this film. It just turns you into a child.”"

The version Gareth Edwards saw was likely the current Disney+ version since it was in the works at the time.

Almost certainly since he mentioned at the time they just completed a new 4K restoration.

I remember him mentioning/referring that it was the actual original version. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me. If he didn’t then yes, it certainly would be the D+ version.

I remember this to. He said it had the original effects and everything. He watched it around filming Rouge One.

And around the same time a box was found in the falcon room. With many unused/ used footage.

Don’t get too excited. None of the film footage is newly scanned. It looks like they’ve used Topaz Video Enhance to upscale the footage because its got a huge tell tale sign of any bright image bleeding into the next frame causing artefacts. As you can see in this one, the laser in the previous frame is visible in the top right of the image. The same happens with every laser in that one shot in this video. That’s a dead giveaway that this type of software was used.

There’s also the old DNR smearing going on in some of the footage

But at least it does look like we are going to get some BTS footage from the OT that we haven’t seen before

What I meant to post earlier. Some members on TSWT have found that these might be upscaled from a different source that is mot GOUT

So they upscaled… GOUT? I don’t think so, the colors look nothing like it and to my knowledge there hasn’t been other official OOT sources available for decades. The footage they show is quite rough and doesn’t look like remastered or final product, I don’t care if it’s upscaled or not. Still the scans look new from anything we’ve seen before, which basically is the GOUT for the past 30 years. And by new I don’t mean recent, but new as in not used before.”

Agreed. I think this is an unseen scan instead of an upscale of something we already have access to. As mentioned you can see dirt and scratches that would never have been visible in GOUT. (white specs on Han for instance)

It also has blemishes not an any of the prints we have (so not on the negative), nor are they in GOUT. (black spots on right and bottom)

Yeah if it’s an upscale, it’s definitely not of GOUT. I’ve used Topaz to upscale them myself a few different times, with different models, etc. and they never looked even remotely this good.

It’s possible they are experimenting with AI DNR, as opposed to AI upscaling.

GOUT vs 2019SE (D+/4k master) Dull Color, Dull Contrast, DNR, motion smearing... Ew
Time

It has bugged some people about the issues that plague both the GOUT and The “new” 4K master. A short summary…
We know the GOUT 2006 bonus DVD is mainly sourced from the 1993 release of the original trilogy. But it is full of many issues. Low contrast. Dull shifted colors. And DNR motion smearing.
We presume that the 4K master is mainly sourced from the 1997 Special Edition (SE) re-scanned in 2012, likely for the “upcoming” 3D release of the Saga, later used for the 4K master. With even more fixing and changing. But this Suffers from similar Low Contrast, Dull Colors, And DNR frozen Grain and Smearing.

Although the new 4k is way better then the 2004 Master (DVD/Blu-ray 2011). The 2004 master Suffered from the complete opposite. Super High Contrast, Oversaturated Odd Tinted Colors, DNR and fake Grain. It has been heavily talked about and I think the studios listened to our pleads

But should we ask ourselves why?
Why Does the 4K master suffer from similar problems as the GOUT? Sure it is sharper and more detailed than the GOUT. Why would they try an make a new master look Dull like an old non reference master?

Lets discuss below…

Have the Disney+ versions of the OT been released on DVD in North America?
Time

The US release was very weird a few years ago. In September of 2019 they re released the 2011 version both on individual DVD and Blu-ray (with the current covers). Then in March 2020 the 2019 Disney Plus version was released on 4k/Blu-ray combo individual or saga (either 4K or Blu-ray with the same covers of the individual DVD or Blu-ray re release of the 2011 cuts. It’s confusing. I still see the DVD release of the individual DVD release in Walmart or target here in the states not sure if they have been updated
