If people are complaining that TFA was too safe - and now complaining that it is too different - then that is no comment on the quality (good or bad etc) of the film itself. These is no inference in their statements that ‘different is automatically good’ at all.

I suppose to a degree, although criticizing a film for being too safe, does imply it would have been better, if it was less safe. Being safe is percieved as a weakness of the film, meaning it would be stronger without that weakness. Since, TLJ is percieved as not being safe, that would imply it does not have this weakness, even of it may have a host of other weaknesses. I think it goes a bit far to suggest, that a film being too similar or too different isn’t in some way meant to reflect of the quality of the film in question.

A film can be quality and enjoyable and many positive other things (as well as on the negative side - or just plain shite 😉) - though still be ‘played safe’ overall.

For me, being ‘played safe’ is not a weakness at all - especially for example… the context of TFA (as stated above, the $4b acquisition and coming after the Prequels).

this is too real.

Since when is different automatically good?

Someone actually demonstrated as well how TLJ is still generally a repeat of a lot of parts TESB and some ROTJ, it’s just no where near as obvious and in your face as TFA was.

.Val mate, a point of view in the form of a video for your consideration in regard to TFA… (done before TLJ was filmed)

Cool video. I was never too bothered by TFA being derivative. It seemed to be pretty honest about that. And it seemed to serve a purpose of giving the audience the familiar together with the new so that a brand new Star Wars stories could stem from there.

Me neither - after the Prequels and the $4b acquisition it was understandable that they played it like that - with lots of PR on the appreciation and love of all things OT.

TLJ on the other hand goes out of its way to do a deconstruction of the events of episodes 5 and 6, even though it had infinite possibilities where to go from the end of TFA. And for some reason it is heralded as being completely different from anything that came before by its fans and critics alike.

Just my opinion - I thought that TLJ went out of it’s way to change fans’ expectations of what was to come given the set-up of TFA - to challenge those expectations and perceptions and taking the story in a new unforeseen direction. (I didn’t see it as deconstructing ESB & ROTJ).

Right now, does anyone really know how Ep IX will play out? And that’s in pretty cool place to be (I think, especially as JJ was the director who understandably ‘played is safe’ somewhat with TFA and is now back for IX).

The sequel trilogy doesn’t feel like Star Wars to me. It is “The Star Wars Experience”. Familiar tropes being coupled with updated visuals with a thick layer of a shallow social commentary on top.

I’m sorry you feel that way mate - I hope upon Ep IX will do something to get that feeling back to you - as a film in itself or looking back as a Trilogy overall.

It’ll be interesting to see members’ views after Episode IX is released and we’ve all had time to take in the Sequel Trilogy as a whole.

As of right now, a lot of the differing and passionate opinions on here and throughout the various threads… may well change upon completion and reflection of seeing everything in the ST tied together - as a trilogy in itself, and as part of the whole saga overall.

Two down, one to go… 😃

If these guys aren’t all being sucked out into space, then a similar emergency field around a small door isn’t a stretch.

Seriously people, we’re nitpicking movies where you can hear sounds in space.

Honestly don’t know why the Ties were called back, its not like they were getting shot to pieces or anything. They’d taken out the fighter launch bay and they’d just taken out the bridge. A few more volleys of fire and the Resistance mothership would have been done for.

.Val

One of the TIEs accompanying Kylo’s TIE Silencer was blown up seconds before Hux informed Kylo that they couldn’t cover their fighters at that range - the other TIE was destroyed seconds after.

(I think that’s how it went down, mate)

Hollywood’s Master of Myth: Joseph Campbell - The Force Behind Star Wars’…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0077sx7/hollywoods-master-of-myth-joseph-campbell-the-force-behind-star-wars?suggid=b0077sx7

^ a 40 minute documentary first shown in 1999.

The blurb:-

‘Documentary which tells the remarkable story of a man whose visionary ideas about myth helped shape the whole Star Wars cycle of films. Joseph Campbell’s writings are the missing link between ancient myths and modern movies, Homer and Hollywood ‘high concept’. His ideas about the universal appeal of stories involving a ‘hero’s journey’ have also influenced films as diverse as Mad Max and Babe. Campbell himself was a reluctant hero, who lived a scholerly life - he didn’t own a television and rarely went to the cinema. Yet Campbell remains a force in Hollywood. With contributions from George Lucas, director George Miller, and writers Robert McKee and Richard Adams, among others.’

‘The Galaxy Britain Built: Droids, Darth Vader and Lightsabers’…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b09k5l6w/the-galaxy-britain-built-droids-darth-vader-and-lightsabers?suggid=b09k5l6w

^ a 60-minute BBC documentary first shown last night.

The blurb:-

'The Galaxy Britain Built celebrates the British contribution to the original Star Wars.

Presenter and Star Wars fan David Whiteley uncovers some never-before-heard stories from the geniuses who helped build the galaxy, from the costume designer and art director to the man who made the lightsaber. It was a time when science fiction films were not box office draws, and very few people in the industry believed in George Lucas’s vision. But his first Star Wars film ended up being a very British endeavour.

The programme documents the behind-the-scenes talent that helped bring the galaxy to life in the late 1970s. It also looks at how the British talent continues to be part of the Star Wars legacy to the present day.’

‘Just perfect.
Dutch journalist to new US Ambassador: you said there were ‘no go zones’ in Netherlands, where are they?
Ambassador: That’s fake news, I didn’t say that
Journalist: We can show you that clip now.
Ambassador: Err…’

Time

I saw TLJ for my 2nd time today - the CGI scenes I thought I had issues with on my 1st visit have dissolved (a different & better screen, I think), and thought the story overall played out better too.

Yes, some of the humour is over the top in a couple of places - and felt a little forced - but that’s the subjective nature of comedy, and the humour in the previous films have often divided opinion down the years, so no real surprises here - it did shift the tone/impact of a couple of scenes for me.

The Canto Bight scenes also didn’t stick out for me as much a 2nd time - it was also more noticeable the abuse the fathiers were suffering - whip marks to their bodies etc. And also appreciated that this is a reversal of the Mos Eisley from Star Wars somewhat - this place too is wretched hive of scum and villainy - just at the other end of the scale (‘give a man a gun and he’ll rob a bank, give a man a bank and he’ll rob the world’).

The Progs, Ahch-To milk dispenser, fathiers, and Crystaline Critters - a nice spin and reminder that the Force is an energy between all things - including nature, and the importance of that.

Really thought Hamill nailed it (and his scene with R2 really resonated), the cgi on Snoke was very nicely done (and so what if his backstory isn’t explained - or if he isn’t Darth Plagueis etc - he is another strong dark side user, where his lust for power and control led to his arrogance and blindsided his beliefs as to what was before him). Carrie did great - some real emotion and her wit shone through here. Driver & Ridley were quality - as was the support cast too.

(I even noticed an actor from an old UK comedy I liked - Channel 4’s Teachers - Kurt of ‘Kurt & Brian’ fame, the hapless pair with great chemistry - was a Rebel pilot in this).

There are still questions and a couple of missteps for me - yet the talented fan editors on here already have some intriguing ideas…

Left the cinema with a smile once again - but with a more fulfilled feeling this time - and TLJ will still likely be in my thoughts for a good few weeks to come - and that’s what a good enjoyable film should do, isn’t it? (For me, anyway.)

It certainly didn’t go the way I was thought or expected it to go - that too… nice one 😃

I’m now very much looking forward to seeing how Episode IX plays out.

We haven’t heard mention of Wedge Antilles either. I’d like to see Wedge come back and help recruit new pilots or something.

They apparently offered Lawson a part in TFA - undoubtedly as one of the Resistance officers. He turned it down because he thought the part wasn’t big enough, which I find odd considering the size of his roles in the OT.

A larger part in IX - as Wook alludes to - something like he trains / or has been training up rookie/new pilots would be most welcome to see, especially if Poe is more of the Rebel Leader character in the next film.

I’ve been glad that Lando hasn’t been in the ST so far (as I think any inclusion in those stories would have seemed forced for his character), but it would be odd if he’s not in IX, after setting up the whole regroup and rebuild the Rebellion thing at the end of the movie.

I agree - even if it was in the form of a hologram like we got for Maz in TLJ; something like ‘I’m sending you some help and resources that may be of use to you’ etc in his own unique style, of course 😃

Having seeing Wook’s idea - I prefer that!

I’d bet the Solo movie is going to show off Lando’s gambling skills in a major way.

I hope so.

Of course, Jar Jar is the key to all this y’know…

😉
