Honestly, I am surprised it crossed $100m.

Yeah. It’s full of actors nobody likes or has even heard of and the premise doesn’t sound like anything that’s been successful before.
It’s really baffling.
/sarcasm

Exactly, a full of stars, can’t miss release just like most Hollywood bombs, especially those from this year…Baywatch, Ghost in the Shell, etc. Which is why I am surprised that this film is as successful as it is…it went up against a new Star Wars release, had quite a bit of controversy regarding it’s seemingly overt sexualization of one of its stars and is another big studio psuedo sequel to a movie from another century that during its own box office run was not super successful, barely cracking $100m in its domestic run. So yeah, it is a surprise, as was the notion of finding a Jumanji apologist on a Star Wars forum…crazy.

I am there for the occasional group buy but not much else. If I may ask, is it the community in general or a particular faction/person?

Mixture of both. Every once in a while I run into some obnoxious asshole on there who thinks he’s the shit though I guess that’s typical of every forum. For some reason they just come off more arrogant there than most other places I comment at and that’s saying something. I’ve ran into a few obnoxious guys around here but mostly I’m use to things around here. I feel tense on that site almost every time I visit it. I don’t feel tense here.

That sucks, but sadly can be the norm sometimes as people tend to find their courage behind the anonymity of their computer.

‘Star Wars’ Franchise Crosses $4 Billion, Eclipsing Disney’s Lucasfilm Price’…

After a few rocky years, Disney proves yet again that is no dummy.

Even if the three films were prequel quality movies, they’d still be turning profit this year. SW is like printing money. If I was a billionare, buying LFL would be a no-brainer for 4 billion when blockbusters are making a billion anyways.

Yes, which why I said Disney was no dummy, meaning they (The Disney company) knew that they could ‘print’ their own money by giving an audience hungry for more Star Wars just that, more movies…the term ‘no dummy’ although a bit antiquated, is actually a compliment and means that they were smart or made a smart decision.

But I thought it was doing terrible?

Lol.

There has never been a film in the Star Wars universe that performed ‘terribly’ at the box office; even the PT films all made money with TPM performing the best of the 3 and breaking the billion dollar threshold.

My original point was in regards to claims of Rotten Tomatoes reviewers purposely giving TLJ poor ratings out of spite for Star Wars; my suggestion was that the percentage of second weekend drop would be a better indicator of the general public’s opinion of the film. The drop was 67.5% which I stated was BvS territory. Wook made a good point about the holiday being partially to blame and sure enough, the next week saw an uptick in movie ticket sales.

All in all, it will finish 2nd overall in the series behind TFA (with unadjusted gross) and Disney will be happy. And I know that you don’t care about box office numbers, but studios do and often times sequels to films are made or sh#t canned due to box office performance. Truth be told, I am kind of a box office nerd, so for me it is just interesting to see how films perform or don’t in some cases…

I’m old enough to remember when the holiday season was a terrible time to open a non holiday film/non kid’s movie.

Yeah, me too. The first real Christmas ‘blockbuster’ I remember was Titanic which debuted with so so box office numbers and not so great critical reviews, but for some reason, the general public loved it which led to its extended stay in theatres. Of course the LOTR films coming out seemed to help cement this new trend. As of this weekend, however TLJ is almost a full $200 million behind TFA over the same time period; but with little real competition, TLJ could surprise some folks.

At least the Jumanji remake didn’t beat it. That would have been embarrassing. 😉

I am predicting at least a few Oscars for Jumanji; it is a quality film with a brilliant narrative.

Kidding of course…it is no where near Fate of the Furious quality.

Projected 68% percent drop in movie ticket sales this weekend; that is Batman vs Superman territory. TFA dropped 39% from its first weekend to its second. We can speculate over the ‘real’ review numbers, but box office numbers will generally indicate how the movie going public really feels about a movie; case in point, The Justice League which will most likely finish its box office run with less than $700 million worldwide.
