Prototype Mono Pre-ANH "XP77:4EB" Edit (Released)
Time
Sounds good. Now all we need is a version with the original mono *and* stereo mixes...
As I said before, someone did one. I have it lying around ... pre-ANH crawl. Sub-TR47 transfer, but decent. Used clips from it in Deleted Magic. You use the audio button to switch from stereo to mono soundtracks.

Got it from Sluggo ... it's not something that's supposed to be widely passed around though. Hasn't been torrented.

EDIT: Oop! Just noticed this thread ... Looks like you're talking about the same pre-ANH mono edit that Sluggo gave me. Haven't read the whole thread yet.

Thanks Hiphats ... thanks for your IM as well.
1. Key scenes with alternate audio from the original mono version of ANH should be included. Some of these scenes already have in the clips we've seen so far. The scene where Aunt Beru shouts "Luke, Luke!" after Luke sees the unfinished holographic message from R2 isn't there thus far.
I actually forgot Beru has a line in that scene when doing the first cut. =)

I'll remember when putting together the DVD edit.

The "Blast it, Wedge" line will also be included.

I DO now have a nice DVD of the VH1 special "When Star Wars Ruled The World" ... at last.

Also, major editing on my feature film Gods of Los Angeles is complete.

AND, I'm buying a DVD burner this week.

So, I can probably get back to work on Deleted Magic when I have some free time.

I'll be working on a test DVD of the cut so far, as well.

More to report when I have something to report.

I'd like to post an official call for help here. Are there any tech-savvy PC folk out there who can do nice full-quality, fullscreen captures (using a screen capture program) of the Declan Mulholland as Jabba the Hutt clips seen on the Making Magic CD-ROM, and the Alternate Cantina and Luke/Treadwell scenes seen on the Behind the Magic CD-ROM?

You would have my eternal gratitude.

Info Wanted: a Pre-ANH edit of Ep IV?
Time
There's already a version of the pre-ANH version of Star Wars on DVD. Was made a few years ago I believe.

I've got it, it's lovely.

The pre-ANH crawl is reproduced, transfer is from one of the laserdiscs, and you can shuttle back and forth between two versions of the 70mm soundtrack and the mono soundtrack.

Clips from this version appeared in my documentary Deleted Magic.

Oop! I hadn't realized I hadn't visited this site in over a month ...

Didn't see these posts asking what was going on ...

Sorry folks! Guess an update is long overdue.

So here's the update:

I have not lost interest in the project, nor will I lose interest in the project. It will be completed soon enough.

Some work has been done - CGI master Shadowman was kind enough to redo our third draft opening crawl up properly, the way it should be done. I got goosebumps when I saw those words come up in DVD quality: "The Republica Galactica is dead ..." He has also redone the opening shot - those lame laser blasts you see on the 2004 DVD have been replaced with the original 1977-style blasts. He wasn't able to put a real starfield back into the shot, sadly. But it's gorgeous, it is.

He's also working on some material for the Biggs scenes, and some other ... stuff.

As for the rest of the film: well, it's time for excuses here.

The problem is, I saw the VH1 special. I saw it, but I didn't have a good copy of it. And I immediately realized that with all those great making-of shots in the VH1 special, I would have to reedit the whole damn thing to include them.

And I wouldn't be able to do any more editing on Deleted Magic until I had it.

Problem is, I saw the VH1 shots online - I didn't have a proper copy of the special!

I have been waiting for my copy to arrive for ... well, months now.

A long time back, I asked Skot Kirkwood of the swcutscenes list to get me some good full quality captures of the Alternate Cantina, Declan as Jabba the Hutt, and Treadwell scenes from the Behind the Magic and Making Magic CD-ROMs.

As I write this, he still hasn't. I'm still waiting on him. And waiting, and waiting.

I'm also waiting on him to get me a full quality TIVOed copy of the VH1 special. He's just managed to grab one for himself ....

This was all requested months ago, but still isn't here.

So, I've just sighed and moved on to other things.

Right now I'm finishing up work on a feature film called Gods of Los Angeles, and creating merchandise and CDs for Neil Innes (singer/songwriter from Monty Python and the Rutles - neilinnes.org).

But .....

The second these items are in my hand, I'll have some very cool stuff for you.

WORK WILL CONTINUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Oh, and Mark - get me them notes on the Death Star run, woncha?

Well, the new website is officially up now ... T'Bone did the original design of course, then I did a redesign, then he did another redesign and it looks all pretty now.

Enjoy.

And yep - the non-corrupt version of part 2 is there.

The trailer has now been downloaded from starwarz.com 1174 times in the last week and a half or so, and the rest of the parts are almost as high. Combined with the 9.4 GB from orangecow.org, this has officially gotten out of hand ....

At this point I'm saying the final DVD will be available in early 2005.

The CD-ROM derived material looks excellent on a TV screen despite the low frame rate. If you didn't mind watching it from the CD-ROM, you definitely won't mind watching it in this.

I've written a FAQ for the starwarz.com/deletedmagic site ... (and designed a new site) ... which hopefully T'Bone will post soon.

P.S. I apologize for taking the files off of Orangecow.org just as I'd uploaded the non-corrupt version of part 2. If you missed it, it'll wind up at T'Bone's site eventually ... I'll let you know.

Okay - as I suspected, you haven't missed anything whatsoever. That is the end of the clip.

But I know it's annoying to watch a clip that goes corrupt at the very end, so I am reuploading part 2 right now!

I actually started doing this the minute I read your posts earlier.

Cheers -

Oh, and yes, parts 1, 2 and 3 were slightly revised a while back, from the way they were originally posted. Part 11 (Jabba/Chief Bast) has also been VERY slightly revised.

I have made further additions to parts 3 and 4, but they aren't available online. They will appear in the final DVD version. =)

I am still hoping to revise the Jabba/Treadwell/Cantina material, if I can get better quality media from those CD-ROM clips.

>>Great stuff. More testament to how deticated fans churn out far superior products than money-hungry executives. The time and effort you must be putting into this is amazing!

Thank you! =) Thanks , everyone. We're now at T'Bone's StarWarz.com ... and the first parts have already been downloaded over 365 times ...

>>With all your features on alternate audio, I was surprised you didn't mention Ben's new dragon call.

Special edition/2004 DVD changes are not part of this edit, except in very minor cases. I'm basically concentrating on versions that would have been in existence in 1977.

The 2004 dragon call did wind up in part 6 instead of the old one -- this was not intentional ... I just didn't take the time to go back to the laserdisc version and get the old call. I might put the old one back on the final DVD. But I wouldn't do a comparison, as that's post-special edition stuff.

>>Also, do you plan on finalizing this in DVD format when it's all said and done?

You better believe it. The final DVD is planned to have lots of extra material and be generally glorious.

>>Very nice work so far! An obvious result of much time and care spent on your part.

Thanks!

>> Could you please check on Part 2? It appears that the end of the clip is possibly corrupt. Perhaps from an incomplete upload? I know you mentioned in another post that this clip had been revised.
Your previous post refers to a file size of 24.5MB but the downloaded file is only 24.2MB. I sure don't want to miss anything!

Yep! I'm amazed someone actually noticed this. I am on a dialup connection, so it's often hard to get files this big uploaded properly, and quickly. In the case of part 2, the upload crashed just as it was finishing. Since basically all of the file was there, I chose not to reupload in this case.

I can't download it myself, so does it actually look corrupt?

I doubt you've actually missed anything - the clip should end with Vader's aide talking to him as they walk down the hallway, with a caption about Kurosawa's classic "The Hidden Fortress."

DELETED MAGIC Part 6
"Tusken Attack/Old Ben"
(21 MB, Quicktime)

I keep skipping Part 6 when I upload the files! Here it is at last...

In part 6, we meet the Tusken Raider who attacks Luke - played by stunt coordinator Peter Diamond. We also meet some unknown actor named Sir Alec Guinness. Don't know if you've heard of him.

A good point, Gravos - thanks. I will try to include it in the final DVD version. Already wiped part 4 off my hard drive for now, though!

Funny - I've gotten a whole lot of comments on Part 4, when I haven't offically posted it yet! Or told anyone it's there .... you sneaky folk, checking my directory.

Here it is:

DELETED MAGIC: PART 4
"The Homestead"

http://orangecow.org/videos/deletedmagicpart4.mov

A day in the life of some jawas. We meet Luke again for the first time, Beru gets her mono mix voice out, and R5 explodes.

Aaand ... here's the revised part 3 ...

http://orangecow.org/videos/deletedmagicpart3.mov

This version has some extra fun with 3PO and R2 in the desert, and uses better media for the Biggs scene (courtesy of Russell Wagus).

NEW CLIPS!

Yep - I've edited a whole lot more of Deleted Magic, my deconstruction
of Star Wars ... and I'm trying to get it all posted on the web for you.

My connection is very slow, so this has been slow going at best, but I
am uploading a LOT of videos - parts 4, 5, 7, Treadwell, Jabba/Bast and
the revised parts 1, 2 and 3 - all will be available for you very soon.

This is gonna be good, folks.

With many thanks to Russ Wagus, Rowland Wafford, Ruben Ortiz and Mark Johnson.

Okay, let's start it off --

  http://orangecow.org/videos/deletedmagictreadwell.mov

The Treadwell Scene ("Sparkle in the Sky") ...

Luke's deleted first scene, this was in black and white and soundless
on the Behind the Magic cd-rom. This is my edit. Ruben Ortiz created the "sparkle in
the sky" animation, and Mark Johnson created the edit that inspired this
(with the help of Brad), and provided the sound files and Treadwell
sounds.

Apologies for the quality of the video in the Treadwell scene - I am still
hoping to get better media for this scene, and other CD-ROM scenes. I
have gotten in better media for the Biggs scenes, though, with many
thanks to Russ Wagus.

  http://orangecow.org/videos/deletedmagicpart5.mov

   DELETED MAGIC: PART 5 -
   "The Search for R2"

There is a part 4, but as I type this, it hasn't been uploaded yet, so I'll
just show you part 5.

Beru's 1977 voice and dewbacks start us off, but this clip is mainly a
reconstruction of the deleted "Search for R2" scene. You saw this in Empire of Dreams
- shot using rear projection, it didn't look very good, and was cut. I've
used audio from the radio drama to recreate the lost scene as best I
could. Mark Johnson provided the sound files, and the still pictures, and
the general idea.

     http://orangecow.org/videos/deletedmagicpart7.mov

  DELETED MAGIC: PART 7 -
   "Ben's Hut"  (alternate edit)

I have skipped part 6 for the moment and gone straight to part 7.

In part 7, we see an alternate edit of the scene in Ben Kenobi's hut -
reedited to match the way it was shot. As you may know, the Leia
Hologram originally came at the beginning of the scene. In the original
cut, we get this urgent message and then Luke and Ben sit around
talking. In the final cut, Luke and Ben sit around talking, before getting
an urgent message - and then have to do something about it. Makes for
a very different scene.

And .... and it's about to finish ...

a test version of the hardest and most insane thing I've done in this
entire edit .... something that took me an entire night to do ...

a widescreen edit of a scene that doesn't actually exist in widescreen.

a widescreen edit, made from scratch ...

of Declan Mulholland as Jabba the Hutt.

   It's the Jabba/Chief Bast extravaganza!

http://orangecow.org/videos/deletedmagicjabbabast.mov

    DELETED MAGIC:

Jabba the Hutt and Chief Bast

Together at last, the Hutt and the Bast! I've done brand-new edits of
Declan Mulholland as Jabba the Hutt, and a little scene with Vader and
Chief Bast (from the Holiday Special, courtesy Rowland Wafford).

What I've done with the Jabba the Hutt scene is completely insane
actually. It took me all night - I haven't slept yet.

Basically, it was bothering me that no version of the Declan
Mulholland as Jabba the Hutt scene existed in widescreen. Short clips of
it existed in widescreen, but the scene as we know it is only in Pan &
Scan.

So, I've created a widescreen version. From scratch.

I've taken the CGI Jabba the Hutt from the new DVDs, and painstakingly
painted him out of the widescreen frame, and pasted in our friend, the
late Declan Mulholland.

I had to pull out every editing trick I know to do this. I was pasting
over as many as 12 separate layers to make the shots look presentable.
And cheating a lot.

But the result is crisp, and DVD quality. The Declan Jabba scene has
never looked this good, ever. Very proud, I am.

It's still a work in progress. I only did the scene up to the closeup of
Chewie, and then reverted to an old, less well made edit seen at T'Bone's site. This is because
most of the clips I need to use are only on an old CD-ROM, Making
Magic. For this test version, I've used very poor quality copies of these
shots - but I'm hoping I can get better quality media in for this and make
the edit perfect.

Well, that's enough for now. But at the moment I'm uploading the
following:

Deleted Magic Part 4 - "The Homestead"  ... A lot of jawas, Luke, Owen,
Beru and her voice, and a lot of malfunctioning droids.

Revised versions of Part 1 (with the Treadwell scene included), Part 2
(with more commentary in the "Leia gives R2 the plans" scene, and a
better quality Biggs scene provided by Rowland Wafford), and Part 3 (with
more commentary in the 3PO/R2 desert scene, and another better
quality Biggs scene provided by Russell Wagus).

Hope you like the clips! Lemme know what you think ...

Incidentally, if you've been emailing me at ggilchri@usc.edu, that's my
USC account, which has now been shut down. Within a few days, I won't
be able to access that email at all. So please email me, from now on, at

Third Clip!

http://orangecow.org/videos/deletedmagicpart3.mov

(22.5 MB, Quicktime)

In part 3 of my deconstruction of Star Wars, there's more David Prowse
as Darth Vader, a few Kurosawa references, and Biggs and Luke part
ways.

There's a couple of special edition shots in this and part 2 that I still have
to replace with 1977 footage, and I want to do a different wipe at the
beginning of this Biggs/Luke scene, as well as replace all the Biggs stuff
with better-quality audio and video ... and maybe make the desert part
longer ...

This is not quite the final cut here.  But it's very close.

Enjoy. Lemme know what you think.

Info: The "Lost Cut" Of ANH
Time
I just posted this in the other thread, but if you missed it --

http://orangecow.org/videos/deletedmagicpart2.mov

(24.5 megs)

In part 2 of my deconstruction of Star Wars, we meet a less threatening Darth Vader, as voiced by David Prowse. Plus, Biggs, Camie and Fixer.

I have left out most of the black and white Luke scene for now, since I haven't done a good edit of this yet. I will also be using better quality media for the Biggs scenes, in the final cut.

Also in the final cut, there will be narrated "documentary" sections talking about the Biggs scenes, et al.

Lemme know what you think.
