I see I've made my mark on these sets. =) Cheers.
As I was using it, "Classic Edition" is supposed to refer to my special version of the first Star Wars ... I don't think the O-OT was called that in other versions. Hmm. Shrug.
Nice work. I agree with MebeJedi that I'd rather see the original posters tho'. I don't much dig Vader on Deleted Magic either. I'm a Biggs man.

Han's shooting first, like the entire film, is edited identically to the original edit.
Han saying "Yes, I'll bet you have" was the most difficult editing job of this project, and required transitioning from laserdisc footage to DVD footage of Han's face during the shot.
2004 footage was used for the Obi-Wan/Vader duel, but the brightness/contrast on the sabers was altered to make them look more like lightsabers. In fact, this brightness/contrast alteration was done for the entire film.
In the first shot aboard the Falcon, Luke's saber was recolored to look more blue.
All the best.

=)
Let me get technical a moment.
I've said plainly that I'm not planning to do Empire or Jedi, but that I'd love it if someone else was inspired by this project and restored them in a similar way. Restoring the complete O-OT with no Special Edition material, and the original laserdisc soundtrack, from the 2004 DVD and the laserdiscs.
I was talking to Gene Ragan today, who works for Macintosh. He was working on his own version of ANH, and stopped when he saw that I'd already done it! But I gave him a little bit of advice on things I'd learned doing my own version of ANH, that he might want to use in Empire.
So, here you are:
---
You work for Apple, eh? Points. I'm a Mac man myself. I did Classic Edition in FCP and DVDSP3.
When you edit together the laserdisc and DVD footage, you'll find that sharpening the laserdisc shots at about a level of 23, and color correcting them a bit, does wonders in making them register to the eye the same as the DVD shots.
Normally you wouldn't do this of course, but since the laserdisc shots go by so quickly, and need to look, in passing, the same as the DVD shots, it's definitely necessary to sharpen them, and that makes the whole trick work.
It is also sometimes necessary to try and use both LD footage and DVD footage in the same shot. If you color correct and sharpen the LD shot to match, put the feather up to a nice degree on the LD or DVD stuff and crop it carefully, the effect can be astonishingly good.
Add black bars separately over these combined images as a new layer.
You'll often need to apply a slight fisheye effect (.5) to the DVD, or sometimes the laserdisc, to make the new transfer look like the old one. You might also need to do distortion and change the aspect ratio slightly to make the DVD and laserdisc match up as exactly as you can. This takes practice. Place the images over one another with the top image at 50% opacity, and then futz with it until the part of the image you need to match matches.
If the DVD or laserdisc section you're adding moves, you move your crop points using keyframing to match it - you may also have to alter your color correcting with keyframing to make this less obvious. Watch the shot a few times and make alterations or add layers until the difference is no longer obvious.
You will want to go back to the Special Editions for certain shots. In Empire, a lot of the film has been overly blue tinted in the DVD version. Luke in the bacta tank and the surrounding scenes come to mind (visible on Wookiee Groomer's cuts). And you need the original SE anyway to restore the original Emperor and Sebastian Shaw. Sven Brooke collects the Special Editions in DVD quality from satellite TV airings - slbrooke at tiscali.co.uk - and so does my good friend Russ Dawson - Russs15 at originaltrilogy.com.
Hope that helps! Cheers ...

I don't mind people profiting off of Deleted Magic a little bit, but if they're charging more than, say, $10 a disc that's pretty ridiculous.
Spicoli - Nice cover! Koo Stark!
The color scheme on Deleted Magic is a little off, and I miss Tosche Station in the background of that Luke/Biggs shot, but this is one of the better versions. With thanks to all the versions previous. =)
Strange to see a "disc art" image that isn't the official one, but that one is nice ... Star Wars in red instead of yellow tho'? =)

Review of the day, from Brant Snell:
---
Thanks a million for the DVD's.... Return of the Ewok was stunning, and yielded
several treasures that were new to me! But.............Deleted
Magic..........! You deserve a gold medal of your own for that. That made for one
amazing evening. Truly stunning. I thought I knew it all, or at least
most, and I learned quite a bit.
It's funny, I was going through the "Empire of Dreams" documentary the
other day, writing down outtakes, and planning on ripping them, wishing
somebody had. Little did I know, my wish was granted! I will be sure to
share this with every fan I know.
I think Lucas needs to see this, and hire you right away.
Again, thanks a million for the speedy round of DVD's! I am still
reeling from Deleted Magic. In fact, I am taking it with us on our trip
this weekend. We are going out of town with my parents, and my dad
w ants to watch it!

No sooner do you make something available FOR FREE on Myspleen, than someone tries to sell it for an exorbitant price to the torrent challenged.
The rampant overpricing is lame, but my concern is that this pisses off George more than usual.
Ah well.
Funky cover on Deleted Magic there - who did that cover? This guy, I assume? That for download anywhere? I've seen that same image used on other DVDs before. Like Tribute to George.
Oh - as for Norway. You can get DM for free via torrent of course, but I or anyone else would be glad to send you one to Norway, sure ...

Arr matey Alex! Thanks so much for the good review and kind words. What Ronto indeed ... best praise I could ask for. =)
No dual layer version sadly ... I only saved the final edit to DVD, not to any lossless type media. The disc is what the disc is.
Here's a review by [redacted].

Once again, fabulous work. The Return of the Ewok Disc was adorable (I
dig Warwick Davis) plus the extras on it are enjoyable (and
cringe-worthy a la Holiday Special... but it's Star Wars, so there's a
geek-love factor there).
Your SW: Classic Edition was seemless. Couldn't really tell when it
was SE and when it was LD. You are very precise in your editing,
innovative with your De-SE'ing, and appear tireless with the hard work
and effort you devote to this. I, and many other fans besides, thank
you from the bottom of our fannish hearts. =D
As for your short films! I watched "Trueheart," and I laughed in all
the right places. The lighting really stood out for me (in a good way)
-- effective in setting the tone. And I love that this is what you did
for one of your class projects. You captured the "Storytellers" feel, I
think.
I also watched "For Science." I gotta tell you, I loved that one. I
watched in three times (once by myself, once with my mother, and once
with my best friend). I cried all three times. Yes. I cried. LOL The
story just went ---> ZING ---> right to my heart. It takes something a)
done effectively and b) I can honestly relate to in order to get me to
that state (i.e., I'm not an overly sentimental bawling fool most of
the time). The combination of the storyline itself, the music, the
acting -- it all came together. I loved the plants/setup with
future-son tripping over past-son (and not seeing who it was). And what
broke my heart is when future-son comes upon his "dead" father's body
because he's too late... ouch. You (and Tim Carrass) did a really good
job in showing a developing story in five minutes. Thanks for making
that one and giving me a chance to watch it.
As an aside, I was thisclose to going to film school, but I decided
against it for more than one reason. Maybe if one of the colleges I'd
visited had showed a film like one of yours, I might have gone after
all. =)
Thanks again for sharing your work.

By the way, Rowman's Holiday Special disc is the KCCI version, which is by far the best version currently known to exist. If you get the Holiday Special on DVD, the KCCI version is the only version I recommend. Cheers!

I would avoid doing a prequel deleted magic like the plague. Not in a million years. I don't consider these to be true Star Wars films, though they are somewhat interesting as George Lucas films.

The end battle uses LD footage for the parts that were changed. As these are all simple space FX shots the LD shots look perfectly natural.

Done done done.
Printed onto the disc is the circus style artwork, poster D.
The final version is version 6.
Two shots proved the bane of my existence and had to be re-rendered over and over, causing an extra two days of work as I realized that THIS version wasn't right either ... These shots were "Yes, I'll bet you have" and "This place can be a little rough" ... In version 6, I believe I've got these ones right. The laserdisc footage is no longer obvious on the latter, and on the former, you can still see that the laserdisc is transitioning to the DVD version, but it looks natural and smooth and the quality doesn't change.
The commentary track has also been fixed a bit to remove a silence at the Lars dinner table.
The chapter menu for the final 5 chapters of the film seems to be screwed up, but through 6 versions of this disc I wasn't able to fix it. One menu always screwed up somehow.
Oh well. Apart from that ...
It's the perfect dvd of the original Star Wars, the only copy you need. And you do need it. So share and enjoy.

The first one comes the closest. In its way. The dewback thing would be better for Classic Edition, I had a hell of a time with dewbacks on that disc. =)
You can get some pretty nice quality pictures off of starwarz.com. The official DVD has a few small ones as well, which can be upsampled if you use the force properly.
Sluggo - Deleted Magic Part One? That's a hell of a way to try and force me into a part two. =) Currently no plans babe. Also, it's in fullscreen not widescreen and I wouldn't say I "wrote and directed" it ... heheheh. I did conceive and edit it. George wrote and directed, I believe. And hey, don't post 300 dpi pictures, link to them! Edit your post man ...

I really ought to do my own cover, shouldn't I ... sadly, I'm very much caught up in other things. I'm doing test versions of my own DVDs after Classic Edition!
If anyone else is doing a cover, I do prefer that the logo for Deleted Magic be blue as you see it on the site, the background a field of stars, which would probably gradient down into a white or light blue leading into a photo of Luke and Biggs, probably the one with Biggs and the binoculars that Ruben used ... Jabba could also be present, or on the back cover. If you're just showing Luke, the Gilligan hat is a must. I had originally planned a Struzan-style collage of deleted scene pics. Other back cover or element ideas: the cast out of costume, 3PO tearing the sign off the door, Sy Snootles ...
Lost Scenes and editing secrets of STAR WARS is the subtitle. You'll find it on yer official Deleted Magic DVDs. =)
If listing the title on the back cover as Orchid has, don't bother with making the end letters of DeleteD MagiC large like that, it looks a bit odd when not in the logo. The Deleted Magic font is Big Caslon, but that doesn't work so well on covers does it ... Orchid's is quite nice.

I've completed version 3, and although it's nearly perfect, there's a few shots in there which I still wasn't quite happy with. It takes a lot of skill to combine laserdisc and DVD elements in the same shot, and go back and forth from one to the other with a dissolve in the same shot, and not have it be noticeable. A lot of times, it's worked surprisingly easily. Other times, you notice the change no matter what you do. I think the hardest shot was Han saying "Yes, I'll bet you have." The laserdisc version of that shot is a bit longer, so you're going from laserdisc to a DVD shot which has REALLY bizarre color correction and generally looks poor in a way that is hard to duplicate. Anyway, it's noticeable as it's a shot people don't expect to have any fixes on it. It took a lot of tries, and I still haven't seen if I got it right yet!
Anyway, for the technically minded, here's the list of fixes:
I seem to have forgotten to include my layer of extra Han face elements on "Yes, I'll bet you have" so the D3 cut of it looked a bit odd. I've fixed (hopefully) some color correction on three composite shots in Mos Eisley (which was making the fixes too obvious - removal of Dewbacks and Rontos and things), removed a bit of sharpening on a dissolve off of Garindan (that covers the loss of the Jabba scene), and removed a repeated frame on the "trooper dead end" shot (repeating a more static frame of Chewie instead, as the repeated frame was too obvious - I'd have just cut the frame, but the sound mix is already complete and I don't want it to go out of sync).
Yes, I know you have only the vaguest idea what I'm talking about. =)
This does mean I have to render half the movie AGAIN, for just a couple of really minor fixes. Sigh.
I might do some minor fixes on the commentary, but who knows.
Aaaaaanyway, it's essentially done, order it folks. I'll make the official announcement when D4 is pressed and ready.
