Movie Blockbusters: The 15 Greatest Hits of All Time.
Time

For me this is a good example of letting people know something exists, and those with an interest will re-find it.  The problem for me is knowing there's all these things i'd like to see, but I don't know they exist.  Like the ESB Parbot doc., what other SW docs/interviews/etc might have been made back then and much of societies' just forgotten.  But with a title or a scrap of information, interest to re-see it can build and in time, someone will get it back out so those interested.

This '15 Greatest' doc is pretty bad, with a strong air of hoity-toity.  The SW interviews are standard fare, Fisher is chatty but gets cutup and a loud laugh track, Hamill's in promo mode explaining his character and the sequels direction.  and Ford is reaching the end of his interviewing so he's aloof, as he knows he won't have to do interviews he doesn't want very soon.  and this could be one of the first major appearances for Anthony Daniels.  Plus another live performance from Williams.

Would have thought the thread dedicated to all the SW Documentaries would have turned into a list factory of titles.  But the general interest of these forums swayed away from the non-movie material for the time being.  Hopefully more people with memories like skyjedi2005's will post about things they remember seeing.  Recently the stuff on youtube has had a resurgence of foreign SW stuff, I would guess there are other SW Japanese documentaries for the OT and possibly a few for the PT.  The odd SW themed commercials never seem to end.  And OT themed variety shows from European countries are probably still untapped.  it's rather endless the media produced which celebrated the movies.

Click on doc. 1 for a run down of the liquidation.  Lots of equipment.

Story got some press a few months back.  Seems Lucasfilm sold off the company in 2006, and since then investors have had issues with the books...

The job rant thread-unemployment, bad jobs and everything in between
Time

Am working for another company behind in payments.  My last few jobs have been like this and when the company/individual goes bankrupt, i'm the looser.

Took some courses for a new career over the summer, but everyone wants you to work for free for a period of time.  Yes it might work out, but well good for someone.

Looking for job ideas where there are worthwhile results.  Thinking of things like typing up transcripts for deaf people or something like that.  Simple things to feel like your making some positive contribution.

George Lucas on Oprah's OWN
Time

http://www.oprah.com/own-oprahs-next-chapter/Oprahs-Next-Chapter-George-Lucas

Various clips from the show there.  Generally the interview is so cut up it lacks depth.  Plus Oprah ends most segments with, that's great stop right there we got it save yourself.

The interesting part is seeing George seem to be content with something outside his Star Wars life.  So playing arm chair psychologist, is there a correllation between the times George is in a relationship and the type of work he does.  Were the 'Linda Ronstadt' Years the same as Willow?  As these 'Mellody Hobson' Years have given rise to 'Red Tails'.  In these non-dating years, does GL conform to the Father role and it's just work work work... on Star Wars.

GL and LR in 84: http://www.ronstadt-linda.com/artpeo84.htm

Willow in 88: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096446/

ok maybe not.  as most of the projects shortly after 84 are Ewoks and Droids cartoons.

The other revelation is that George is a stalker.  George and Mellody retold their meeting story and it was George plane hoping with Mellody... You're going to NY, i'm going to NY, you're going to XYZ, i'm going to XYZ.  until she understood what was happening.  Cute in a rich creepy way.

This interview with the recent 'retirement' statements could be a sign that all his talk about person projects getting accomplished could be in his future.*  Who knows maybe GL will make an online venue like Funny or Die where his personal stuff will get the chance to go viral.

The end of the show interviews 'Red Tails' actors, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard.  Too short, as they spend camera time doing non-movie discussion.

* The problem with this idea is that the SW live tv show is going to eat up a big chunk of time.

Some ideas/notes for a Yoda article.

"Irregardless of your opinion if digital or puppet is more believable..."

45 shots containing Puppet Yoda were changed for the blu-ray.  Which is 2% of TPM's ~2,246 shots.

Lynne Hale diaries (end of ep.5)  has bronze model of the new puppet Yoda and Stewart Freeborn.

Making of TPM doc. 49:30 Frank Oz (while looking at Watto previz) "You don't need me" George Lucas "Things are definitely changing"  same discussion but a phrase to use at the end of the article.  GL: "We'll always need you."

The 'Puppets to Pixel' doc from AotC, chronicles the evolution of the original model.

Quote from that doc:

09:00 - AotC meeting on Digital Yoda

George Lucas : "The secret is to make him look like a rubber puppet.  The problem we got to last time was to make... when they made the upgrade didn't look like the older puppet anymore.  So... Then everyone complained that he didn't look real.  But he looked better then before yes they made him better but people don't like that.  They want him to look like he did before, in the first film."

Mention first appearance of digital Yoda in Star Wars in Concert.

Multiple blogs wrote about the blu-ray revision:

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/01/gizmodo-australia-visits-lucasfilm-interviews-star-wars-effects-guru-dennis-muren/

As fans of the films know, George Lucas has been happy to update and make changes to the original films over the years to achieve results he feels he always wanted to achieve back in the ‘70s. We asked Muren how he feels about updating effects from his work thirty years ago – from wholesale changes to touching up obvious imperfections.

“I was all in favour of doing some redos on the original Star Wars because we ran out of time on that. I wanted to redo about 30 or 40 shots and George wanted to redo some other ones. At some point I think it is OK.”

“But going back and trying to continue updating it based on the newest technology, I don’t know what I think.”

“Garbage mattes, definitely. It really messed up the original VHS tapes of Star Wars because everybody thought it was that way when it came out in the theatres, but of course they weren’t. It was just the transfer wasn’t done quite right.”

“So I’m all for getting it the way you saw it in the theatre – maybe that’s a better way of putting it.”

“As long as the original version is always available, then I think beyond that you can do whatever you want. Based on the generation who is seeing it. But I think the original version should always be available.”

Ovan Marekal wrote: Yep; neither SaveStarWars nor SecretHistoryofStarWars have been updated in months. I hope he hasn't dropped off the face of the earth...

Research takes time. (as does finding work / making a living)  The actions which lead to the creation of SaveStarWars took place 25+ years ago, and there have been minimal developments since.  These kind of articles shouldn't be expected at regular intervals.  Although when there are increased official SW activities, sometimes that leads to new developments taking place.  But it's never clear where the new article might come from.

With TPM coming back to theaters, is there a related topic or idea which could be expanded into an article?  Feel free everyone to toss out ideas.  An article similar to the SE changes could be done for TPM.  The changes were more additive then revisionary (until the Yoda puppet replacement), but trying to determine why TPM got recropped in different ways could be something to postulate about.

'Tribute to the Last Physical Yoda Puppet' - would you read something with this title?  The article could get into shift between digital and physical effects.  Talk about the people who did the puppetry, etc.

John Simon on Star Wars

Anchorhead wrote: I disagree with that statement.

Thanks for the perfect opening remark.  (good job without coffee)  This was part of the point of this post.  There's been complaints about the NYTimes article where George comments about 'retiring' and how people are pointing fingers at internet posts which were negative.  Yet critics like Simon have been critical since the beginning and George has said 'he didn't care what critics had to say about 'Star Wars'.*  Simon wasn't alone, but i've just been fascinated by his interaction with the SW phenomenon, thus the quote collection.

Now if I wanted to be a dick, I could have replied to Anchorhead with:

You disagree with the statement on vestigal prettiness, but you're ok with the bovine comment?!!!!

But really I think Simon is clouded by Fisher's family history when these statements were made.  If Simon's remembrances of Debbie was that perfect, then the offspring from that cad Eddie are what spurred these statements.

But those TPM quotes are just weird on a whole other level.  And i'm constantly fascinated where people draw lines with people's statements.

Lucas' Red Tails

Hoth-Nudist wrote: I thought the airmen deserved more, and certainly deserved to have a quality filmaker tell the story instead.

FYI Red Tails director is Anthony Hemingway.  Who has directed TV shows like 'The Wire', and CSIs.  And has been assistant director on multiple films.

If your complaint on 'quality filmaker' is on what material was shown, then that's George's decision.  As he's stated that a film prior to the actual war footage and one after about the Civil Rights movement when the soldiers return, could be made.

Words from John Simon on Star Wars:

"One of [George] Lucas's particular achievements is the manner in which he is able to recall the tackiness of the old comic strips and serials he loves without making a movie that is, itself, tacky. 'Star Wars' is good enough to convince the most skeptical 8-year-old sci-fi buff, who is the toughest critic."

Carrie Fisher is "bovine and unappealing"

via: http://hauntedbog.com/worstcritics1.htm

John Simon, New York, (June 20, 1977), collected in the book, Reverse Angle (1982)

"Still, Star Wars will do very nicely for those lucky enough to be children or unlucky enough never to have grown up."

John Simon in National Review, June 13, 1980

"The Empire Strikes Back... is malodorous offal... everything is stale, limp, desperately stretched out, and pretentious.. Harrison Ford (Han) offers loutishness for charm and becomes the epitome of the interstellar drugstore cowboy. Mark Hamill (Luke) is still the talentless Tom Sawyer of outer space - wide-eyed, narrow-minded, strait-laced. Worst of all is Carrie Fisher, whose Leia is a cosmic Shirley Temple but without the slightest acting ability or vestige prettiness."

via: http://kirjasto.sci.fi/brackett.htm

"Diverting piece of nonsense."

These movies try to keep children; stupid children forever.

And that I think is wrong.

http://old.nationalreview.com/movies/simon061499.html

As for Queen Amidala, I'd say her name comes from the Yiddish, a madela, a girlie. Natalie Portman, who portrays her, as well as her decoy doppelgänger, is both Jewish and quite a girlie. The name of the beautiful 9-year-old blond boy, Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), derives, surely, from manikin, i.e., little man, and what a little man he is!

*omit*

The heartening thing about The Phantom Menace is that overwhelming armies of evil can be mowed down by a handful of stalwarts with computer-game ease because the Force is with them. "Feel, don't think," Qui-Gon counsels, and I can report that the second part of the advice was scrupulously heeded by the filmmakers.

In the wikipedia entry on Bruce Vilanch:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Vilanch

there's an uncited note that he may have done script enhancement on Raiders. (and Die Hard...)  Sounds completely crazy that one of the main writers of the Holiday Special would have been asked.  ...but sometimes reality makes me a fool.

This can't be correct.  anyone know?
