STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Ady,

Great to hear you're almost back on track already. I know you were concerned when the meltdown occured that it would take month and months to redo all the effects, but it sounds like you've been able to bounce back faster and better. Was that because the Adobe After Effects files and elements were still intact? Not knowing a lot about that program, I admit I am curious. Keep up the fight.

Adywan,

So glad to hear that the second pass with all the doing-over has had some positive results. I believe I stated when you had the computer meltdown:

With all of your experience and reflexive knowledge now, I believe anything you may end up losing you will be able to bring back faster and possibly better (to your eye, because to mine it was already perfect) than before.

You know the movie visually better than anyone at Lucasfilm, that's for sure. Check your e-mail by the way. Happy birthday, Ady', even if it is early or late - got a gift for you.

Keep up the good work, we'll keep the wolves at bay.

Hey Adywan and vbangle,

Just showed a Star Wars fan and friend of mine at work the redone Tie Fighter attack and he flipped out of his seat with excitement. I told him of the recent computer woes and right then and there he whipped out his wallet and gave me $5, all the cash he had on him, but still, that's the effect this Revisited is having on even the casual fans.

Adywan, look for that $5 in the form of a Paypal transfer Saturday. I promised my friend I'd contribute his cash to the cause.

Adywan,

Glad to hear from you and know that you haven't given up. This will be hopefully the only major setback. Check the rest of the ship and make sure there are no more attached...chewing on the power cables.

2008 isn't that far away really. I could stand with a little more time to look forward to it. And if something does happen, don't hesitate to ask for help.

Adywan!

My gosh, I'm SO SORRY to hear that. I know right now you feel like giving up and throwing in the towel. I can't say I wouldn't in your place. However, I'd also walk away for 24 to 48 hours and simmer and try and put some distance between me and the frustration. Right now I know you're caught up in the stress of it all. A year or more of work that MIGHT be gone, but then again, it MIGHT NOT. I firmly believe right now, as careful as you were with backups and your equipment, the majority of this WILL BE RECOVERED. Just take some time to breathe and be calm, at peace...passive.

Let's say worst case scenario, it isn't recovered. Then what? I'm not you. I don't know how you react or how you process thought and emotion. I can only tell you what I see and what I think the larger community is seeing. Adywan, you have accomplished so much more than anyone thought possible outside of a miracle with this edit. You have brought Special Edition haters and Prequel fans together and you have given EVERYONE who loves Star Wars the first real glimmer of a finished work.

For more than a decade, I was searching for the ultimate Indiana Jones hat from Raiders of the Lost Ark. It took another fan such as youself, Steve Delk, to finally make what the original hat maker could not. He slaved and slaved and made the best Indiana Jones hat since Harrison Ford ran from that boulder and he had SO MANY setbacks, frustrations and moments of panic. Now, every Indiana Jones fan is in his debt.

I already feel I am in your debt. You got me interested in Star Wars again, something that was my only passion for 20 years before the prequels squelched it. I freely admit, I would hate to see this all lost, all of your amazing work gone forever. But really, it's only gone if you take your talents elsewhere. People beyond this forum are raving about this edit. I have people at work who have never been here who already told me they now feel shortchanged by the official DVD and ache to see your version. Then there are those across the Internet, all waiting with anticipation for November. You have done the impossible. Not only in bringing this almost-29-year-old fan back from mothballs, but galvanizing the Star Wars community in a way that hasn't been done since the 20th anniversary and the anticipation of the not-so-special editions.

Adywan, your work does not deserve to be a piecemeal series of fragments incorporated into another edit. Your work has always had a supreme vision. Fight for it. I'll do everything I can alongside you to resurrect this edit. Yes, it's that important to me and I believe many others here feel the same. With all of your experience and reflexive knowledge now, I believe anything you may end up losing you will be able to bring back faster and possibly better (to your eye, because to mine it was already perfect) than before.

Whatever I can do to make this edit a reality, no matter how many setbacks, no matter how long it takes, I said I was willing to do. I stand by that statement. I lived in the UK for almost five years - If it gets so extreme that you need simply an extra set of hands to burn DVDs or write labels on them with a marker - give me a month's notice and I'll grab a flight. If you're $50 short for a needed component, say the word. Your work has proven your worth.

I only hope the rest of this board realizes what I instantly saw a few weeks ago. Star Wars Revisited is not simply Adywan's to lose, everyone. It's everyone's to lose. We have one chance to make this happen. Let's not waste it.

Adywan. I stand behind any decision you make. Call your play and I'll back it.

With the utmost respect,

Wookiee Groomer!

Just wanted to tell you I left you a message on the a.b.starwars message board - I don't know if it's uploaded yet, but I wanted to thank you for the ESB HD! Unfortunately, I'm missing the first two files - they seem to have flown the coop. Any way to reup those? I'd really appreciate it. You've made a lifelong (29 yrs old) ESB fan very happy!

Hey guys,

Pardon my ignorance, but I have beaten my head against a wall trying to figure out how to find and access this atl.binaries newsgroup and while I understand torrents backwards and forwards, I do not understand where or how to get to this mythical newsgroup. Could someone help me please?

Wookiee Groomer, I'll happily compliment your HD posts as soon as I can download that Premiere HD copy of ESB, I just need to know how to get to it!

Hey all,

Hope everyone is well out there. While I await Adywan’s Star Wars Revisited with anticipation, I have acquired an HD copy of The Empire Strikes Back from its broadcast on Cinemax. While it is broadcast in HD 1080i and not the slicker 1080p common to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, I am very impressed with the details that come through compared with even the 2004 DVD. However, while I am happily stunned with the detail I am equally stung by the not-so-Special Editions to the film, namely the Wampa, Boba Fett’s “new” voice, the loss of Luke’s joke on Dagobah and the useless Vader-lands-on-his-shuttle scene.

I can live with the Cloud City expansion (sans the Lando intercom scene in an ideal world) and while I’m not totally sold on McDiarmind’s new performance as the Emperor, I could also live with that if the line about “the young Rebel who destroyed the Death Star blah blah blah offspring of Anakin Skywalker” was removed. It lacks all subtlety.

The only problem is I have not the skills to do this kind of thing, just the master file itself. I don’t know if it’s even possible without some anamorphic OUT footage that could be upconverted. Even then it would definitely look crappy edited into an HD stream. I’m probably living a pipe dream as I type this. Too bad the 95 percent of the original Empire that is in HD has to go to waste…

Oh, I’d also like to give a very-much belated shout out to OCP for his excellent ESB Classic Edition (It’s the only one I watch) and to the maker of Building Empire. Truly amazing work and endlessly entertaining. Thanks guys for teaching me even more about my favorite movie than I already knew and allowing me the ability not to cringe through Lucas’ bad additions when I watch the film.

Thanks all for reading this. If anyone wants to talk ESB, feel free to PM me.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Someone asked me today if I wanted an HD copy of the original Star Wars to watch. I said, "Eh, it's only the Special Edition, which I can't stand. I'll be more than content upconverting Adywan's eventual DVD resolution version to HD through HDMI for the rest of my life. That's what I want."

I hope the editing continues to go smoothly, Adywan. I can't express what a service you are doing and the way you have found that tenuous place where both OUT and SE fans are excited and impressed is to be commended. I find that most SE haters like myself disliked the changes in story, character and mood - It seems you are also of that camp of preserving story and character and mood, just polishing and enhancing what is already there, not pulling us out of the experience. Also, because your restoration work has been so thorough, at a scene-by-scene level, new shots (both yours and SE) don't stand out like they used to with the 1997 SE. They feel more organic and interwoven. It's brilliant.

I know the extended Alderaan Jar-Jar scene is a special feature and I'm grateful for that rather than have it in the film. I honestly do not feel I can dictate creative choices to you because I have not the talents you are putting into this project. I do not think it is my place to judge. I would like to say one last thing - I don't know if a decision was ever reached to preserve the Jabba scene in the movie or not, but I know you were thinking about deleting it. I hope you do delete it. It repeats dialogue from the Greedo scene (which now looks amazing, by the way) and ruins the reveal of the Falcon by the heroes two short scenes later. The scene destroys a little bit of narrative impact and writing-wise, it is redundant.

However, I know that if you choose to keep the scene, you will have a good reason for it. Unlike my thoughts on Lucas lately, it is nice to see evidence that Adywan's judgement can not only be trusted, but euphorically supported. Keep up the great work and if something goes awry, let us know. I know I'll jump in and do anything to help. You have my word.

Thanks for the information Adywan and DE. Puts something out of my mind that was nagging me. Oh, and DE, I've seen your SE and it IS something special, despite previous comments from others. It's certainly 1000 percent more than I could ever accomplish. Much thanks to all of you out there who keep hope alive. It's hard these days to be a vintage era Star Wars fan. Most of the time, you don't feel like someone's got your back out there in home video land.

Where do PAL versions of these projects generally see the light of day? 'Spleen and Demon' catch most of the NTSC versions, but I rarely if ever see a PAL version on there. Also, I was thinking it might be worth it for this very special project to invest in DVAtlantis and simply convert the PAL version to NTSC myself. Does anyone have experience with this software? I hear it preserves the PAL image quality much better than other methods.

Keep up the incredible work Adywan. November can't come soon enough.

Gosh, I hope there is an eventual NTSC version of this. I watched the Tie Attack clip and honestly found myself getting excited in a way that hasn't happened since I saw Return of the Jedi in the theater in 1983. Unlike sitting in the theater for the 1997 SEs, adywan, your work has captured my imagination. I'm getting excited about Star Wars again, something I didn't think would happen. I'm having a hard time explaining it to my friends and family, who know that I walked away from everything but the OUT in 2002 after AOTC was such a disappointment for me.

Not only is this a super polish, but you've also apparently given us the benefit of seeing Jar-Jar die like he deserves with each viewing. I only wish I could have seen those other initial clips, the Alderaan sequence, the original trailer, the effects montage, etc., all of which have expired on rapidshare... Oh well, maybe they'll be posted again by someone who has saved them.

Thanks again Adywan, I'm waiting for November. Incidentally, if there is anything I can do to help, anything at all, PM me.

Adywan,

I have a technical question. Being a film professional and home video guy myself, I know this is not the result of your efforts but likely the playback of footage in the UK here on US programs or something, but the dialogue is SLIGHTLY higher pitched and seems slightly sped up Is this a PAL thing? - Is there an adjustment I need to make on my viewing software, and if so what is it, or will there at some point be an NTSC version of this to view? I hope so, because I have a feeling after this is finished, it's the only version of Star Wars I'm going to want to watch.

It's not the way I remember it, but it sure as hell is the way I WANT to remember it from now on!
