These two Senator theatre pictures seems to have been taken with the exact same exposure settings.
The R2D2 canyon shot seems to have more or less the same brightness level as the GOUT but the shot with Luke looking at the sunset is clearly much brighter and with higher contrast.The question remain though if it was a 'deliberate creative decision' to make the sunset appear darker in the GOUT (1993 telecine) or simply the effect of the colourist trying to hide the defects from a noisy and faded print, which is what I tend to believe.

And you're right, now when I've seen the Japanese Special Collection transfer recently it is more close to it in color than the "GOUT." But I don't know if this picture is any true representation of it's original cinematography and colortiming, I just got very nostalgic when I saw this photo and thought to myself, this is how it's supposed to look. But I guess we'll never know...
also the Canyon scene with Artoo being captured is very bright compared to the "GOUT" release.

i checked out the star wars spreadsheet, pretty cool..
i'm working on my own frame reference guide,
and it matches up somewhat with the shot guide.
although i only have information for the DVD - US NTSC GOUT.
there is an issue with the frames being off by
a few for each VOB on the disc, because when you
combine them, the frame count is different.
i might use your shot descriptions..
i still have 3 more VOB files to go, the last one
is a short one.. i'm not going to annotate all
the credits though..
i'll post the exel spreadsheet when i'm done:

i was 10 when it came out..
waited a few months from when it opened in canada.
most of my friends had seen it already. but they were
talking about it all the time..
we used to have lightsaber battles. and bought
action figures. my original r2d2 and c3po figures
are on my kitchen counter, and i see them
everyday... i also still have my star wars bedsheets
in good condition! ha ha ..
i collected all the bubblegum card
sets. i remember coke had a promo of matching
characters with a plastic picture that you peeled
out from under bottle caps and you could
redeem them for money.... bought the comic
books. read the novel. there was a newspaper
comic strip that had different adventures..
and when splinter of a minds eye came out,
that was really cool to.. i remember hearing the
meco 'disco' theme from star wars on the radio.
i bought the soundtrack on vinyl, which had
a cool poster... i drew all kinds of artwork on
my own.. i always wanted to be luke as the
character i associated with..
i only saw it once originally in the theater.
and the second time was for the re-release
in 1979 before 'the empire strikes back' came out.
when they added the episode IV to the crawl.
that was it... never saw it in the theater again,
until the SE came out.. i've still only seen the
original less than 5 times to this day.. and yet
it's my favorite movie of all time.. and i can't
wait to see a restoration of it.

well, i concede that at a pixel level basis, they are not EXACTLY
the same...
but for all intents and purposes, when overlaid there is a
high confidence factor that they are derived from the same
font family, and probably were the same. the differences arise
from printing to film from the original elements, and the gate
weave making some letters, like the 'A', appear in a different
position.. i tried comparing outlines, and they matched up for
most of the letters, but again, were not exact pixel-for-pixel.
i guess it depends on what level of precision you want to go to..

part of the issue with my images, are they are at different
aspect ratios, different brightnesses, etc..

It isn't just the spacing, they are in fact different fonts. The SW version is Univers, while the ESB version is Helvetica. I know msycamore said they use the same font, but look at the top of the "t" in "Production." In SW, the dot of the "i" is completely over the head of the "t", while in ESB, the "t" and "i" are almost the same height. When I typed it out in Univers, it matched SW, and when I typed it out in Helvetica, it matched ESB.
So to clarify, the LFL logo was different on every movie, but "ALTA" was the same on SW and ESB and changed for ROTJ.
why do they match up when you overlay them?
i thought there would be a lot of differences, and
it wouldn't be close. but it seems to be.

I think it still needs a Lucasfilm logo on the spine, above the THX logo, though it wasn't there on the original VHS box. It was a catalogue number there, but this is designed for Disc 1 of the GOUT and I can't for the life of me figure out its catalogue number.
i like that poster also, but my favorite has always
been the hildebrandt poster..

The images you just posted are still lossy reduced conversions; the background details are too fuzzy, vague or crushed for me to compare them to the Senator screenshot. I have to use the paneling on the right wall as my reference, but the whole right side just shows up as black on these screens.
Do you have access to the full-size frames right now?
Also, I made a mistake in my framing chart - I used the modern Panavision aperture of .825 x .690 instead, which is actually a little smaller than the older .839 x .700 aperture that was in use in '77. I'm found an even higher-res scan of an older SMPTE RP40 chart; this time it's the complete frame, including the soundtrack area.

Empire came out a little bit skewed as you can see and if you look at the 't' in Production you'll see that it isn't exactly the same font as on Star Wars. And as we have listed on 005's comparisons, the '97 SE's seems to have left the original ALTA alone except on Star Wars, which now have had three different ALTA with the '04 release, only one change behind the Greedo confrontation. ;)
actually this is more proof they are the same,
here's the overlaid version, using your shots:
except for the top A, they match up again.
i haven't done a frame by frame lineup of
both star wars and empire. but besides gate weave,
they line up very closely.. i don't have jedi yet, so we
can't compare those.
