Print it to 16mm and then Puggo can preserve it @_@

...and then someone will video bootleg it.

...and that bootleg will be duplicated by the VHS traders.

I kneu this we're tha ways the callours should am:

Oh my God, look at those wonderfully saturated 70's hues. What bulb was this projected with?

wow. looks like we've come full circle.

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread
Time

i like the prequels, all of them.

the third one the most. then the 2nd,

and lastly phantom menace.

i saw each one in the theater near opening day

or on opening day.

i've watched the prequels a LOT more

than the original trilogy on DVD. in fact,

at some point, i'll have these on 35mm

film at some point in time.

i prefer watching them over jedi, and

empire (which i also saw in the theaters

once each). of course, star wars is my favorite

out of all them. and i don't mind the revisions

on dvd, special editions or blurays either.

i watched the clone wars movie in the theater,

and have been following the tv series from the

beginning.

i'm hopeful about the live action series too.

bring on more star wars, is all i have to say!

I actually think a Jar Jar Binks spinoff movie could be either genuinely hilarious or so unfunny that it becomes unintentionally hilarious. Either way, I for one would like to see it.

there are some clone wars episodes that

are jar jar centered.. some funny, and

some unintentionally so.

 You mentioned gate weave.

Is that do to the scanning or is that how it was filmed?

I know that the GOUT had rely bad gate weave that made me seasick.

yeah, i know what you mean.

there is some inherently in the movie.

we will be minimizing what we can through

stabilization and cropping.

Of course, my ideas are only good when the end result is projected film. Since this specific project will be digitally viewed no matter what, not much to say except "do a good job".

;)

if we were REALLY CRAZY, (as if we aren't already),

we would get it printed back to 35mm film..

using some laser to film:

lots of good information

here:

pricey!

Is the bottom video the cleaned up version ? Because I think it looks worse than the original in some places. What's that black "thing" on the sky in the shot where Luke runs up the stairs to the Tosche station ?

yup, as mentioned above.

but this is just playing around.

there's a lot more tests, and much

better results coming using dedicated

software compared to scripts.

there's a lot of artifacts and anomolies

in these images. some aren't as noticeable

in the video versions.

i hope to post more soon.

ok, just to make things more confusing..

how about this..

there's a movie theater that i go to

that will allow for private screening of films

for a rental fee. i brought up star wars,

and this project, and they said sure they

can do it, as long as it not advertised or for profit, etc..

however, due to the soundtrack, and cleanup

etc.. maybe we'll ask them to project the

digitally restored version from a file or bluray.

so the chain of media would be:

======================================

35 mm film -> scanner -> digital restoration -> digital projection of film

if there wasn't any artifacts or aliasing, would an average

person be able to tell that it wasn't film being projected?

(most likely).. but maybe someone wouldn't notice it right

away.. it's still going to have reel change marks, etc.

half the time i'm watching it on screens or projected,

it 'feels' like film.. because of the gate weave, dust, dirt,

scratches etc, that are still currently there.

I'm not sure which parameters you are using but the artifacting is probably a combination of not enough "pre-blur" followed by too much sharpening.

yup,

there's a lot of parameters to play with!

so that's why i'm just messing around

with some of them. i might have tweaked

a few settings, but the final ones will be

more conservative.

Watching star wars - frame-by-frame slow motion : Cool stuff

ok,

after describing every single shot

in star wars: (need this for a project)

it took about a week to go through it

with breaks..

i realized there's a lot of cool stuff

in star wars that most people have never seen.

(well at least, i've never seen them before)

maybe it doesn't count as watching it.

because basically, you're stepping through

all the shots.

i'm NOT talking about bloopers, or continuity stuff,

colors, or cropping issues either..

but weird things on the screens, strange symbols,

reflections of the crew..

i like the greedo dummy 1 frame:

------------------------------------------

i'm sure there's lot of other cool things

in there if you look..

here's a better version of the dummy.. ha ha

will be looking for more cool things soon!

here's just a preliminary test

of han shooting greedo.. there's

some color correction done to it.

it was completely red tinted to

start with.

we won't be using it.. but i just

wanted to see what some of the

avisynth results looked like.. part

of it is very nice.

up..

but it looks nice in parts!

first up. one of the luke at tosche station

sequences..

this is ONLY using the avisynth script,

and not the full blown editting suite

with cleanup plugins..

there's a few weird artifacts, and the some

of the larger damage is still there.

it's a decent starting point..

top-original

bottom - cleaned plus some sharpening

the file properties:

==============

time : 61 seconds

Audio: PCM 44100Hz stereo 1411kbps [Audio 1]

Second, film has infinite resolution.

Oh really?

Information on film goes down to the atomic level.

Oh, so not really. Cool.

I thought that a 4k scan was just over what a 35mm film frame had on it?

Maybe you need 5or 6 k for 70mm?

depends..

you can do 4k/8k scans of 35mm too.. it's not dependant on

the film.. just depends on how good the source is to take

advantage of it..

very cool..

i never did own a VHS deck, and got one a few years ago

for the first time.

i've missed out on watching ANY of the VHS versions.

at some point, it would be nice to have EVERY version

that was on VHS digitized.

what about BETA though? did it ever come out on those,

did anyone preserve those?

i like seeing all the news about the VHS versions lately...

exciting..
