Star Wars Colortiming & Cinematography (was What changes was done to STAR WARS in '93?)

Wow, what activity. :)

I like that you mention the warm and golden quality of Star Wars as that is exactly how I remember it, especially the scenes on Tatooine, slightly old fashion. I also think that sometimes people may mistake the warm 70's look for very saturated colors, this frame is a perfect example of that nice 70's look. Those pics of the Derann print also display it, very nice.

Haven't seen this one before, was it posted on his site? Another thing that stands out to me about this frame is the darker blue on R2-D2, see how far removed the look of R2 seen in modern transfers is compared to this, even compared to some earlier transfers to some extent.

here is our version:

(these are all raw non-corrected frames)

That picture was originally posted by Mike in the Despecialized Edition thread.

Here are the other images from the screening which he posted there:

Mike's original posts are in pages 122 and 123 of the thread. He explains more about the screening, how warm projector bulbs were in the 70s, and how the same print projected with modern lighting looks different:

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

That might be a fair compromise.

I'm CONUS, too, so the shipping for me would not be a big deal - maybe $50-60 tops to ship the hard drives. However, for people who were interested, like Harmy, it could get really expensive really quickly. Not only would they have to fork out the money for the terabyte harddrives, but they would incur huge shipping costs. I just shipped 10 DVDs to a South American fellow and he had to pay $58 in shipping - and that was the dirt cheapest way. I just don't want our non-CONUS members to get shafted because it will be a huge file...

Would one be able to do a 1080p OpenEXR? I read a bit about it yesterday, but am still a little confused about what it does. Does it make the files smaller, using a better compression ratio or something?

shipping is a pain, especially if its multiple drives.

openEXR supports 1080p, with non-lossy compression, and

a whole lot more. it would reduce the filesize, but not by the

amount that would make a huge difference for this issue.

this is the latin american dub i have been lookin for ages!

can you PLEASE upload these track, so we can use it for harmy 2.0

thanks in advance!

good to know..

however, we're not done with it yet!

also, it might have to be re-synched, since

it's not GOUT.

and finally, we have to replace 'han shoots greedo'

scene, because that's in english. we are hoping

to get an original from the voice actor that played

c3p0.

Well, the issue with the X0 captures is that the GOUT had already come out when they were finally released, and had become rather irrelevant since the GOUT was a digital copy of the laserdisc master tape.

This is something completely different.

However, I also feel that a very small minority will REALLY want the raw captures. In this case, it should be relatively easy to post a hard drive.

Just sayin.

for an intermediate solution,

a 720p downsample using openEXR

might be a lot more manageable.

we're still messing around with the files.

but if that's a few hundred Gigs, that MIGHT

a lot more reasonable.

The film frame scans are bluish because 8mm projectors used tungsten lamps. When you project the print, it will look like it does in the photos taken off of the screen. (The colors in the pic of 3PO and R2 fall somewhere between Mike Verta's photo of the IB Technicolor print with the 70s projector bulb, and his photo of the same scene with a modern xenon bulb.)

I have to agree. I think that by as many people having the raw files as possible, that the "preservation factor" is the most it can be. It's like some of the studio audio files and bootlegs that leak occasionally; once they're out there, their rarity is diminished. Also, who would've thought even 5 or 6 years ago that a slightly large download would be 16gb? I think that as time goes on, the ability to download huge files will become more commonplace.

unfortunately here in america, the internet speeds are

pretty terrible. even 5 years from now. so that's not

going to change the fact about trying to get several terabytes

of data.

i HAD highspeed internet for the first time 3 years ago.

and have download 5 terabytes or so during that ENTIRE

time.

honestly, i wouldn't even download this if that was the

only way to get it. it's not worth the hassle, imagine

the headache of dealing with partial files, incomplete

files, PAR's etc.... i'm really thinking online is not

realistically going to be an option at all. someone else

will have to pick that up. i'm only going to be dealing

with just the possiblity of one hardware copy, and

that's it.

the thing is 3 people (including myself) already have it.

so we've backed each other up for redundancy. that's

all that we might need for the short term.

The 720p parts, is that a result of the capture resolution being too low? (the raw files) Or did you guys purposely scale it down that much because you felt higher wouldn't have brought out more detail in those shots?

that had nothing to do with it.

all work is being done for a 1080p release.

i just have some of it in 720p, because it was

quicker and smaller to preview. also some of it

was rendered with cleanup, and it was a lot

faster to do it for 720p.

Project release formats - what should we be using these days?

Why is the blu ray still so shit then if ILM has access to such technologies as this.  They could not even get the color right.

Sorry to derail the thread but Lucas has access to the best tech money wise its very strange the final product does not reflect it.

the irony (pointed out to me by cinch),

is they developed the technology we might be

using, to save their own film(s)!

and by the way, i think the blu-ray versions are

very good for what they are trying to do, especially

with all the extras and bonus material.

i'm amazed at all the detail and clarity in the pictures.

most of the colors seem pretty good to me to, but i'm

not really an expert.. just an average home watcher

that's used to the SE versions.

getting ready for preview 0:

=============================

1) All 6 reels completed in raw format

2) some of the reels have been slightly

   color corrected

3) resolution is a minimum 720p, with a few

reels in 1080p

4) sound is a temporary Stereo soundtrack

synched up

5) watching in on 24" /1080p monitor, and will

rewatch on 2 other screens

========================================

private clean up notes will follow,

but i will post general thoughts about it also..

this is a major milestone in the first preview,

and we will get to previews 1 and 2 later on

as the cleanup and color correction are done

on the reels.

===============================

most of the cleanup has been done in order.

however, the original crawl , intro, and han

shoots first all need special attention and

will be dealt with separately in trying to

restore them to an acceptable state.

Well, my largest upload was Harmy's Despecialized Edition Remastered MKV and I have quite a slow connection, so that's not really a reference. However, I've seen people uploading untouched BDs of a tv show season, which comes in at 200+ GB, with a speed of several MByte/sec.

So if you know somebody nearby with a fast fibre optical connection...

this is still several times that in size!

so unless someone wants to do this..

also, think of the end results.. i'm not trying

to dissuade people, but sharing it is going

to clutter up the newsgroup, and with the

end result of just a few people using it.

again, i mentioned pooling your resources,

sharing the costs, and shipping is probably

the only realistic way to go in the end.

Usenet? 100+ Mbit flats aren't too expensive for most providers and the better ones offer like 4 years of retention. If you released the rared raw images reel by reel archives shouldn't be too large, right? Of course it would take quite a long time to upload I can image.

that might be the best and only possible way.

however, someone is going to have dedicate a lot

of time and bandwidth to upload several terabytes.

has anyone had experience with anything at this level?

how did people deal with the wookiegroomer 1080p

releases way back when? those are the only huge

releases i can think of..

Exciting! Access to the raw images would be a dream come true.

we still don't have a solid plan.. it's just way too much data

for most people to deal with.. buying drives, and shipping

drives is going to be expensive.. i'm lucky i was near the

people, and could just hand deliver most of the stuff..

-1 Can I ask how you capture this audio? Are you just recording off a projection set up...or is there some other way? (optical scans?)

Also since I doubt the film doesnt have any sort of stretching, how do you plan on precisely matching it to the film footage?

it's from a projector.

we will sync the audio very carefully.

i'm not doing it, but will get cinch to

comment on it.. and post the answer here.
