...one other thing to note is that the metal curved plate seen off to the left (actually it's a base plate) is the same texture as the four squares...

The easiest solution would be to make it darker in color...so that it almost blends in to the background (and is thereby differentiated from what we see of it within the "printer tray". But I would definitely agree that it looks odd. It always stood out to me as just a bunch of crap that was thrown down to achieve the look of the gadget they needed for the shot. Either that or the props guy hadn't finished working on the piece and they asked for it on set.

I don't think dialogue makes the stormtroopers more menacing. On the contrary - if they have the need to spell out even the most basic orders (blast them, stop that ship), then they really don't seem to be a really competent force.

It's a command structure....it's not because they're stupid...but because orders (especially in high stress situations) are always barked out....even when the orders are blatantly obvious.

Personally I think having them completely silent makes them less credible as a source of danger to the protagonists. Like I said in my last post...I wouldn't want spoken lines everytime we see a stormie on screen......but I think only 2-3 instances in the entire film where a stromtrooper says something would make them more credible. One to three word sentences only....like "yes sir" or "move"....that sort of thing.

Mockups are one of the best things that happen in here and will always be welcome. Having said that, here are my thoughts on the stormie voices in ESB:

I think ESB stands out from the other 2 OT films for a number of reasons, one of which is the increased dramatic tension our heroes are placed under during the events portrayed in the film. ESB is a character film above all else....and way more so than IV or VI. As such I think the focus pulls inward...from gazing out at this strange new universe and all its marvels (as in the cantina in IV), to a more intimate, "close-up" view of our main characters. We really get to know them on a deep personal level and have less time for the "look it's a space alien" or "hey, a new spaceship...let's see what it does" kind of moments. I think the storm troopers (who Han and the gang spend the entirety of IV running away from) are given a more secondary/background role in ESB....in favour of giving Vader more screen time, and making HIM the threat. I think the story of ESB held up so well that stormie voices were probably never needed as it would detract attention from what's going on in the foreground.

I DID like a couple of the additions (though it would be nice to hear them with original dialogue instead of recycled) (and yes, I know you only used what you had on hand).....the "yes sir" from the snow trooper being one of them.........I don't, however, have any need or desire to hear them say something everytime we see them on screen.......in fact many of the moments where you chose to put in a voice was actually taking away from the dramatic tension that was being built up in the scene (Han about to be tortured is a good example of this). BUT I'd say that your overall premise IS correct....they DO feel a bit more menacing when we know that they're thinking and voicing thoughts instead of just running around mute.

3rd Unit auction to raise funds for materials for ROTJ:R shoot (relevant because it's an item from the ESB:R shoot).

The cave monster that almost eats the Millennium Falcon is too obviously a puppet.  Does adywan have a fierce-looking dog?  He could film his dog trying to bite a toddler, and then rotoscope it into the place of the cave monster.
ALLOL

That's the one that got me LOLing for real too.

I'd argue for snowtroopers on the ground, in the existing shots of the exterior battle......but not an added arrival at the base, nor the troops "lighting the fuse". That whole sequence is more or less 1+?=2......and the brain easily fills in the missing "1" without it being shown to us.

ESB is in fact the OT film that Ady is changing the LEAST....and to be more accurate I should say the STRUCTURE of the film is what isn't being changed. Anything being added, removed, or altered is within the existing frames of the film.....or at the very least, if a shot IS being COMPLETELY redone, it is being done with an eye towards the original shot and trying to keep the layout or feel of the original. Entirely new sequences are not being added to this one.

True, seeing Vader's landing shuttle isn't truly needed...

well said

but muddyknees, that wasn't my only reason for this idea. That would indeed be one of the highlights, but it'd be more than just that.

lol, I was being sarcastic.

Veers tells Vader that he may land, and we then see Vader on the ground. Filling in all the little gaps and explaining things to death is a big part of why the prequels sucked....there's no room for imagination.

Don't know why the tower was blue, but it makes no sense to reveal the Executor first before the shadow

Yup, the shadow should be the shark fin.

Couple that with the direction of travel issue and I think those 2 things clinch it as far as editing structure goes.

But then there's also the lighting issue. IF the close-up of the bridge we see is supposed to be a SSD then the lighting on the SSD switches sides between shots.

I think the blue coloring was either flat out a mistake, or someone's clumsy attempt to tease the SSD with incorrect footage (which, as has already been pointed out, happens often).

EDIT: My money would be on it being a mistake....I'd guess that whoever was recoloring the SSD model from grey to blue decided that the SD bridge filling the screen meant that it must have been "the big one"....and incorrectly colored it blue. And then in subsequent re-releases they just stuck with what was already there when doing color touch ups.

Not how I meant it at all...but I can see how it might have been taken that way. I actually quite like the idea for Ep 1 or 2 (probably II)......distant, in the background...but with that same familiar cry. Would be a nice nod to the original that started it all. I took it to a ridiculous place, simply trying to be amusing.....I should have also stated that I actually liked the idea.

Just a thought - would be really cool to see a living krayt dragon in one of the edits, making the same noise Ben uses in ANH:R

Oh don't worry....George is secretly working with FOX to make one last release before rights revert to Disney. The Krayt Dragon will now make an appearance in ROTJ. In the Rancor scene it will come out of a totally new part of the cave...eat the Rancor, we cut to Luke who hears the disembodied voice of Qui-Gon saying "There's always a bigger fish"....Luke looks confused cause he doesn't know who's voice is talking to him.....but then has to escape the Krayt. It'll be very exciting...and very dense. You'll probably have to watch it at least 10 times to catch it all.

Well that's just it.....I think it more or less IS already perfect. There's a reason I've come to like Ady's approach to these films.....it doesn't add more just for the sake of it, there's reasons for things to be added....and when possible he adds them into existing shots instead of creating new ones. For example....the rebel troops are all firing away...but at what? Their guns aren't slowing down the walkers one bit and they KNOW this. Imperial ground troops being in the shots would give the Rebels a reason to be in those trenches, firing away. BUT, I'd want it added into the existing shots.....small troopers amongst the feet of the walkers.....the fact that they'd be there doesn't need to become the center piece of the scene in question......just a little extra info to fix an error in logic/continuity. The order of the shots and sequences in the film works just fine the way it is.

In my opinion ESB is the film that works the best as it is. Kersh was great at what he did...and ESB is his crowning achievement. Now, as I said, this is MY opinion...but I think that it is probably a shared one.....and as such I think any additions being made to ESB need to fit into the editing the way it is. There are things I don't think need to be added...but if they ARE added, I don't see the benefit of reordering the shots and scenes in any way. For example, I've always wanted to see more imperial troops on the ground (to give the rebs something to be firing away at)....but if someone was to do it I would much rather see it fit into the shots already in the film, with a minimum of added new shots. Just my two cents...
