I understand not wanting to see a pointless sequel, I just don’t get how the original three Indiana Jones films tell some kind of story that was concluded and never needed to be revisited.

It’s not that all three create some sort of big story. It’s that TLC ended in a way that leads the character to a grand sendoff. It was the emotional culmination of the series. So yeah, he never needed to be revisited again.

It’s like if after Star Trek VI, after all the signatures on the screen and everything, they just made another movie with the original cast, and not only that, but what if it was embarrassingly bad-- Oh… wait.

It’s not really like that. STVI in a lot of ways was about aging and one last hoorah. Other than riding into the sunset (one scene), there’s nothing like that in TLC. Sulu and Scotty also returned in later ST series and only a couple cast members were in Generations. It certainly wasn’t a movie with the original cast. I’m also not necessarily convinced that a Spielberg interview twenty years after the film came out is definitive proof that TLC was meant to be Indiana Jones’ swan song the way Star Trek VI obviously was for the original cast of Star Trek.

False equivalence. What in YOLT gets in the way of the possibility of another Connery movie? I don’t recall any Connery going off into the sunset moment. Indeed, the character remains alive and well.

You ignored my Rocky example.

I dislike all the Rocky sequels.

I was referring to Chewbaka, but you’re about the Rocky sequels by the way.

You guys are completely overlooking Dek’s argument. He’s not saying simply that it the Last Crusade wasn’t meant to have a sequel, but that the film was explicitly designed to preclude the plausibility of a sequel. While you can say the former about Star Wars, you cannot say the latter. Very different arguments.

Actually, you can definitely say that about Return of the Jedi.

EDIT: Frink beat me to it.

I’m sure Bladerunner wasn’t designed to have a sequel made thirty-five years later, but it still got one and that doesn’t mean it was bad or anything. I don’t even like the fourth Indy movie and I don’t rewatch it ever when I revisit the series, but that’s because I don’t like it, not because it was a needless sequel. Rocky also was much more obviously concluded with the intent that it wouldn’t have a sequel. “There ain’t gonna be no rematch.” “Don’t want one.” But we got six anyway and some of them are great. It isn’t like they made a sequel to Dances with Wolves or anything ridiculous like that.

The high functioning autistic thread
Time

It’s relevant because I’ve been called autistic before by people trying to insult me but I don’t think that’s the case because most of my supposedly autistic symptoms developed later in life and, I think, from a specific incident. I guess I could’ve said that but I forgot. If you would’ve bothered to read my mind then you’d know all that.

I’ve never heard anyone refer to Indiana Jones as a “story.” It’s really weird considering that none of the three movies even directly reference the existence of the others.

Indy knows what the Ark looks like in a nod in Last Crusade.

And of course they aren’t literally a single continuous story, but I assumed everyone here is smart enough to figure out what I meant. They are three selective stories from the life of a character, and they all add into a good overall thingamajig.

To me it’s like complaining that the James Bond “story” is finished and doesn’t need to be continued. Knowing what the ark looks like isn’t a plot development. That’s why I said they don’t “directly” reference the others. I assumed everyone would be smart enough to figure that out.
