Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

I think TPM is less obsurd and more watchable than the other two. The big reason, as already stated, it doesn’t have as much failed attempts to tie things in with the OT, like having Obi Wan learn to talk to Qui Gon’s ghost or Boba Fett being an 8 year old etc. etc. I also think that it’s just easier to sit through; sure it’s convoluted but at least it doesn’t get too deep into the mindboggling confusion as the subsequent two. It also looks the best, and has pretty great visuals (with the exception of some dated CGI), while the others just look completely fake and hideous in my opinion.

Movies generally considered "bad" that you like.
Time

I love both Halloween III: Season of the Witch and the Man with the Golden Gun, which are both generally considered to be the worst of their respective franchises. I know they aren’t objectively good movies, but I still love them.

One movie that I don’t necessarily like so much as moderately enjoy that everyone absolutely hates is Alien 3. I thought it was ok, not good by any means but still interesting. By the way, I am talking about the theatrical cut of Alien 3. I know a lot of people like the assembly cut version more; I have the blu ray anthology set so I’ll be checking it out soon.

You’re talking about the 4K restoration of the 97SE, though, right?

Probably, but no one knows exactly what was restored in that project.

True, no one knows if they restored other elements (ideally to assemble the actual original film). But they did restore the 97, based on the lightsabers.

That’s true. I think that in any situation they would restore the SE, regardless of whether or not the original version is included. My thoughts are perhaps any type of special new box set with new HD transfers might include the unaltered versions of the films.

What baffles me more than anything about the original versions of the trilogy is the fact that a restoration was done that had people working on it up until at least summer of 2013 (assuming those people weren’t lying on their resumes). Regardless of whatever versions these are why would they just never release them? Unless they’re waiting for 4K blu ray players to hit the market, which is happening this year.

They look better than the current colors. Might I ask how it looks like the 04 master? I haven’t seen the DVD in ten years.

Also, I’m pretty sure Lucasfilm uses the 04 master (with changes) as the official digital negative or whatever for the films, so I don’t see why they would have an alternate version of the 04 version without the changes and completely different colors to use for the website instead of the “official” version.

The official website used a frame from the unaltered version of Star Wars. It’s cropped and weird looking, but it’s not from the GOUT or the Special Edition.

There are at least a dozen “ifs” between this frame showing up on the SW site and confirmation of an upcoming official release of the OOT, but the color in that doesn’t look like the SE or any of the approximations of the “authentic” theatrical colors it the preservations. If this is indicative of anything at all, I wonder if it’s indicative of brand new color timing. I think this opinion puts me in a minority here, but I’d like an OOT blu-ray to look like a really good blu-ray rather than a slavish recreation of a late 70s theater experience, so the idea excites me. I dislike the current blu-ray colors because they’re ugly, not because they’re inaccurate.

I agree 100%, I want something with realistic looking colors that are at least consistent. Getting them generally accurate to the originals is a plus, but having inconsistent colors based on what might not even be entirely accurate source in the first place isn’t something I personally want, but I understand the appeal of that to a lot of purists. The thing is, that shot is NOT the Special Edition (the SE includes clouds covering the bottom sun), which I find very interesting.

The top frame of the Millenium Falcon, if that is the frame you’re referring to, looks to be from the teaser trailer, not the TV spot the article is highlighting. The frame of Luke on the homestead looks new.

I was referring to the Luke one. The colors are really weird and it’s either zoomed in or cropped. It isn’t the Special Edition though and it isn’t from a trailer

Someone with more knowledge on the subject than me should comment, but I was browsing the official website and I think there is some kind of restored frame from Star Wars on an article. Here’s the link

It definitely isn’t from GOUT, I checked, and I know it isn’t the Special Edition; the colors are very strange though and it’s either zoomed in or cropped. It’s in an article about trailers, but it is too clean to be from a trailer especially when compared to other shots.

The Library itself has prints of all three. Only the original film has been scanned digitally. I emailed them and they responded saying that the National Film Registry specifically has not received new prints of Empire or Star Wars, but copyright deposits (which he said are considered ‘archival masters’) of all three unaltered films are held by the Library of Congress. Researchers can make appointments to watch Star Wars (1977) if they need to.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I just realized that the Force Awakens essentially “retconned” (does that mean written out of canon?) the PT. The PT made clear that Vader was destined to destroy the Sith based on some ancient prophecy, and I’m assuming that Kylo Ren and that fish guy in the hologram are Sith - or at least the equivalent. So basically all that nonsense about the space prophecy and Vader being the savior of the universe was irrelevant.
