I just did a little research. White got a reduced sentence because his lawyer was able to successfully argue diminished copacity.
He’s saying that he was able to get such a reduced sentence because they were sympathetic to him murdering Milk.

If I thought someone had a gun and started shooting them and in the process killed someone else, I would immediately be thrown in jail. Why is it that cops, who are supposed to be trained to prevent these accidents from happening, get a bunch of leeway? They should be better than this, and if they aren’t, then they should be held responsible.

Also most of these wishes aren’t for “presents” or “Gifts”. Getting a girlfriend isn’t getting a gift, is finding a treasure and it’s something you have to do for yourself women aren’t objects to be given or taken.

I’m scared to death of car accidents. I had a horrifying near miss a couple years ago that easily would’ve killed me (though thankfully probably not anyone else) and ever since I’ve been really cautious and often avoid driving at all.
I don’t think anyone is, or should be, begrudging him for taking offense. To play devil’s advocate, the problem is that at this point in time a lot of people simply don’t view the use of the word “retarded” in any form as inherently offensive. It’s just a fact. It isn’t seen in the same light as the n-word. A lot of this depends on culture or upbringing and stuff like that. I had no idea that anybody found it so offensive that it should be designated the “r-word” until a year or two ago. I just didn’t know. Immediately attacking someone for using it, especially when not as an insult to any real person, is an unfair response I think. I haven’t read everything in the thread or the aftermath because I want to avoid as many specific TLJ spoilers as I can for now so I may not have gotten the full gist of the problem so I probably just shut the hell up and go back to lurking for a couple more days. Anyways, I really hate to see Frink banned over this since I love him so much.
I wouldn’t allow any site merchandise if I were you. Profiting off of other company’s brands is very dicy legally and is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

If you makes you feel better, most of my ranting about people is compulsively typed when my mood swings and aren’t always representative of my thinking at other times, and I generally keep it in the support thread or the bitching thread.
I actually said something nice about Return of the Jedi earlier, and a few days or weeks ago (I don’t remember, time is a blur to me) I started saying nice things to get my mind off being negative. Other than complaining about how awful Christmas is, and cordially stating why I don’t care much for TFA or R1, I think I’ve been doing better lately.

I’ve been way to hard of Jedi lately. It’s a solid movie. I do still think it’s a big disappointment, but I was watching it earlier and the nostalgia came back and there’s some great stuff in it.

the guy giving the orders on the video of the shooting is not the same guy that actually fired the shots. The guy giving the orders was the sergeant of the guy that fired the shots.
They had no idea if there was or was not a third person in the room that had not yet come out.

Okay, thank you, I didn’t see this comment a minute ago. I got some of this because I read the guy’s comments, but apparently for some reason that’s no substitute for watching an hour-long video. I think the first point just shows that both officers are guilty. The second seems week to me because that shouldn’t have any bearing on whether they execute the surrendering man. As for the rifle, how does executing the surrendering suspect prevent a guy with a long rifle from shooting them? Like I said, it’s incompetence at best, murder at worst. That “good cop” in the video should find either of those to be huge problems. It’s the good cops that make excuses for these bad ones, always, and that needs to stop.

I wasn’t referring to you specifically, I was referring to the Christmas culture in general. And yes, most people that are uncharitable piles of self-centered trash don’t shut up about the spirit of giving that supposedly has to do with Christmas. The boring religious element, while irritating enough to me on its own, also makes the consumerism that defines Christmas all the more hypocritical.
While the underlying argument you make that greedy consumerism is wrong, many people are selfish and uncharitable, and it is hypocritical to attach such behavior to the religious element assigned to the season—while all of that is true, at the end of the day it comes down to what attitude you intend to take, and how you intend to behave.
I behave no differently than I do any other time. I get more irritated because the holiday pisses me off, but that’s it.
Yes, commercialism is bad, and wrong, and people are hypocrites. But you have to decide whether or not to let bitterness fester in yourself about it. Being bitter will not help you feel better about yourself, nor will it bring joy to those around you. You do have valid points, but being bitter isn’t the answer.
I’m bitter about everything, this is just one extra thing on the list. I try my best to bring joy to those I interact with. Most of the time I fail, but I give a give it a shot anyway.
Also, the religious aspect, while boring to you, for many is the most important part of the holiday regardless of how society has commercialized everything else.
I know that it’s the most important part of the holiday for many people, I just don’t find it compelling. I still find it boring and it’s association with trampling people at the store and buying cheap stuff amuses me.
