Preserving "French" Original Trilogy - ANH V1.0 released - ESB in progress
Time

Actually I don't own the reels, but I'm trying to obtain them. And yes the quality looks very good !

ilovewaterslides you are right about the sound, it sounds like the TV VHS. Maybe it's because it's a mono mix.

Laserschwert, you know, french people have always wanted to do things different as the others do... ;)

Here I’ve got something cool for the french release. This is the french Greedo sequence from the french 16mm reel

As you can see the font is not the same as for the Italian or German release. It looks like Arial. I made a test and it looks good :

Are the 16mm and the 35mm reels using the same font ? I hope so and this will be my new reference for the french Greedo sequence.

Here are another 2 shots from the 16mm reels, the intro of ANH and the intro of ESB. As you can see, the french ANH has the english crawl but all the rest is in french.

Regarding the Greedo font, for everybody else that won't know what we're talking about: yesterday's screening of "Star Wars" revealed a different font for the Greedo subtitles in the italian version of the movie. Not only that, but the original translation is yet another one I hadn't yet encountered. I'll post a screengrab right away. I think it's some sort of Frutiger.

 Nice !

Maybe it's here the font that is been used in all the european translation.

Star Wars: A New Hope [SET ruLes 1.0] - AVCHD & BD RELEASED!
Time

What you have done with the OUT and SET is a very good work and it had to be done and it would be great that you do this for 2 others movies. Honestly, for me, the SET has not very interrest because I don't like the "special edition".

The OUT looks very good but I must admit that I will now prefer to see Harmy's version with the french crawl/credits that I have done for "La guerre des étoiles".

Anyway a such good preservation has to be done and you have done a great job.

I'm preparing a first release of "La guerre des étoiles".

Do you think it is better to release it as an mkv file or as AVCHD ?

There will be a second release later as a Bluray with a menu and with a better encoded Greedo sequence. Because on the first release I must have added the subtitle on a sequence who was already encoded in h.264. So this sequence is twice encoded.

I plan too to make an audio track based on the great 70mm mix of hairy_hen, but that implies a lot of work and time.

As I was kid "La guerre des étoiles" always refer to the first movie (EP4). I don't know how is it now with the young people. Are they talking about "Un nouvel espoir" (A new hope) ? Perhaps...

In fact "La guerre des étoiles" is a bad translation.

"La guerre des étoiles" is the traduction of "Stars War"

The correct traduction "Star Wars" is "Les guerres de l'étoile".

About the audio, you forgot to mention the laserdisc stereo track i've sent you ;)  To me, it may be the best source we have for the moment.

Right !

I have sync bluray audiotrack to match with the deed release. It was a bit harder as I expected.

So I have for the moment :

- 2.0 from the GOUT

- 2.0 from 1st LD release

- 5.1 recreate from the GOUT audio + hairy-hen LFE

- 5.1 bluray track

- 2.0 from the VHS of the TV release

Preserving "French" Original Trilogy - ANH V1.0 released - ESB in progress
Time

Hi guys.

I was away from the net for few days. I'm now proud to announce that my second daughter is born on 13 April :)

And now star wars things : I remade the end credits with a better blue color. And I smoothed a bit the font so that it now look a bit rounded. It's now the final version of the credits.

Laserschwert has made a beautiful french crawl and I will use it for the french release.

Now it only misses Greedo sequence. I made it with the font like in the VHS. Laserschwert can make it with the original english font. I think that will be the best.

Now I have to work on the soundtrack. I have 2 for the moment :

- Original 2.0 french track from the GOUT

- a 5.1 version of the GOUT using Dolby Prologic to make it 5.0. And I add to it the LFE channel of hairy_hen track.

Any ideas for more french tracks ?

If I had the opportunity to have the original french crawl in HD I would let the typo. But here were talking about a re-creation.

And for example in the German preservation for the Greedo sequence, are you sure you are using subtitles font and text that were in the movie when it was release ? I have talked with people that have seen the movie in 77 and they are saying that they were no subtitles on the Greedo sequence. Maybe it was the same with the German release.

It's a hard question and it's not easy to find the good answer.

I've sent you the link to the French intro via PM (Vimeo locked my account). If anyone else wants the video, shoot me a PM.

I looked at your video. It's very, very nice :)

You have done a great work, thank you very much.

Could you just redo the crawl to change "pourrant" to "pourront". It's a typo in the original crawl and I don't think it is necessary to maintain it. The "Il y a bien longtemps..." seems a bit darker to me like I previous said but It's not really a problem.
