Tarantino has famously refused to compromise, fighting for the ear-slicing scene in Reservoir Dogs when its distributor Miramax wanted it toned down; releasing his martial arts epic Kill Bill in two parts rather than making cuts. But the two films that make up Grindhouse have now been prised apart and re-edited. Both will now come out in the UK as stand-alone movies, although Tarantino says Grindhouse will eventually be seen here on DVD and also perhaps in repertory cinemas. 'It won't disappear,' he says, as much to convince himself as me. 'After the movie was over, I grabbed 20 prints and stored them, and Robert has 20 prints. So we can show it when it needs to be shown.'
But he insists that Death Proof is not a compromise, that in countries where there was no tradition of trashy double bills - so, most territories other than the US, the UK and Japan - the plan was always to release longer versions separately. 'A case could be made that my compromise was Grind-house,' he says, and if he doesn't believe this then he's a far better actor than critics have given him credit for. 'Because me and Robert had to cut our movies way down for it to work as a double feature. We wanted to create an experience. It was very challenging to cut your movie to the bone, and I only had the strength to do that because I knew Death Proof proper would go out too.'
