2016 High-Res Star Wars Soundtracks
Time

Speaking of mastering, the last decent master was released - what - a quarter of a century ago at this point?

That’s where the discussion should start, really.

Yes, 24bit is an attempt to sell you the same thing for the thousandth time, but in reality you’re not even getting a comparable product vs your ‘cheapo’ cd you picked up in the early 90s without even thinking of whether it’s going to sound any good at all. That’s the real kicker.

There better be tons of deleted scenes on the Rogue One Blu-ray when we get it

Watching this last night, I noticed several scenes in the trailers that are not in the film.

‘Several’ is putting it very mildly:

I’d love to see a Dangerous Days-style, in-depth documentary on the production of this movie one day.

Scatterbrained initial impressions.

I still can’t believe the sense of place this movie exudes in every single frame, sometimes to the point of being downright detrimental in a few scenes (CG Tarkin and Leia, although not too bad on their own, are extremely distracting as a result).

I do wonder how much fighting it took for Edwards to convince Disney to let them let him make it AND leave it this way.

Nitpicks as far as CGI characters, pointless Hollywood amounts of exposition aside… I loved it. Didn’t even notice there was no crawl. This is how they should have rebooted Star Wars in the first place: by placing it in the hands of a talented director who has a clear vision, and is capable of staying true to the source material without copying it mindlessly for maximum marketability. And my god, did this movie feel like it took place in a real universe. This is the director’s clear forte - I love it in his movies.

It puts TFA - a mindless corporate product you have to dissect for every tiny trace of sincerity - to shame. I can only hope this movie makes enough billions of dollars to send the right message to the suits (and that it’ll be interpreted correctly, but that’s another discussion).

I am very impressed, very, very happy, and extremely grateful to Gareth Edwards for pulling it off when I really did not believe he could, or be allowed to.

Please, Disney, let Rian Johnson have as much (if not more) freedom with Ep. VIII.

Many more viewings are already scheduled and will follow.

In what ways did TFA completely nail it, either in terms of filmmaking or in terms of continuity?

My favourite shot in the whole film is Rey sliding down the sand hill. I don’t know why, but the music and way that scene was shot just feels so genuine. You get the feeling she’s done this before. I also really like the scene where Rey is washing dishes, and looks over to the elderly women also watching dishes. I like this scene because you see the sort of realisation in Rey’s eyes that she may well be doing this until she is that age.

My favorite scenes as well. Great character moments peppered with solid worldbuilding. Introspective, beautifully shot.

It’s going to take a lot to make Kylo Ren deserving of redemption in my eyes after what he’s done.

I doubt it will ever happen, but Chewie ought to be the one to kill him.

I hope they are going to redeem Kylo Ren. It would be a waste of good drama otherwise. Snoke seems like a generic baddie with little to build on - certainly much less interesting than Kylo Ren, whom they already spent time developing.

Speaking of whom, I am curious as to what they’re going to do with Chewie now since he’s in for the ride - for the time being, at least.

Please do not beat that horse again. And definitely don’t beat it in here. The situation has been explained elsewhere. And frankly, I’m sick of having to rehash it.

Don’t worry - it was just an off-hand comment after trying to post something for the first time. First time I’ve logged in since the move.

I wouldn’t mind a link with an explanation if there is one, though.

I hate the new forum.

The movie I didn’t care about all that much. Exactly what I expected, down to all the beats, copious amounts of flashy, pointless service, copying Star Wars way too much, Abrams being Abrams and all that. The old cast were a crutch at best.

It’s not bad overall, it has some much needed heart, there’s good characters in there (as mishandled as some of them are) etc, but I can’t praise a movie just for not sucking as hard as the PT / for being an actual movie as opposed to any of the PT abominations. That’s such a low bar it’s not even funny. I’ve seen it all done before, and done better. Do better, Rian Johnson. Or rather: let Rian Johnson do better, Disney.

Abrams played it extremely safe and that’s why they hired him. I kinda wish they got someone else.

I don’t even feel like seeing it again at this point, frankly.

That's Gabriel Köerner's concept for a reboot Enterprise, which 90% of websites will use thinking its the JJprise.

In other news:

http://trekmovie.com/2015/06/18/paramount-acquires-startrekbeyond-com-invites-star-trek-beyond-fan-creator-to-pitch-tv-series/

I don't believe this for a second. Guy happens to own domain Paramount wants, so Paramount (who doesn't have the rights to Star Trek on television) wants to hear his pitch. Either this isn't true at all and the guy is capitalizing on the fact that we all know the name of his concept he bought a domain for but never actually made anything, or he had the opportunity to make thousands of dollars for a domain Paramount needs and he threw it away to pitch to people who have no power to do anything with said pitch.

Besides, if this guy gets a pitch based on owning a domain name, what about the people who have a history with Star Trek (Robert Meyer Burnett, Michael Dorn, etc.) who have pitches who are being ignored by the studio?

Even if he really did get a chance to pitch anything - and that's a big 'if' - publicly talking about it basically ensures that pitch won't go anywhere. Pretty dumb thing to do.

I'll believe it when I see official confirmation.

edit: here's the first decent piece I've seen on that bit of 'news':

I'd imagine most are.

I find that deal with EA all sorts of depressing. Give me a good story-driven game, not a Battlefield clone/reskin. Hell, I'd take a crappy story-driven game in place of a Battlefield clone/reskin. Virtually any game, really.

Obviously, I'd love to see a follow-up to KotOR2 from Obsidian, preferably in the form of a finished game this time around ;) No chance of that happening with EA in the driver's seat, though.

Sorry for my stupid typo, didn't notice it.

The Internet is not known for forgiving so easily. You will have to atone for your transgression, but don't let that stop you from posting here. At the end of the day we're all pretty friendly people. As long as you're perfect or not a filthy foreigner. We don't take kindly to those 'round these parts.

Anyway, back to the actual topic. Is this the guy doing the voiceover?

Or is it someone else?

paszczak said:

I hope my trilogy is salvageable as it comes without additional editions but if Polish audio can't be removed, it's not worth it.

Quite the contrary: it's worth it because of the wear, tear, low quality and all that. If it's Knapik that audio's already been ripped, but like I said: a full rip would've been very, very cool to have for the historical value and for the nostalgia factor. I watched those tapes as a kid.

As far as I know, VHS tapes have only one audio option.

VHS does have two audio tracks, however players will only read one. When the VHS specs were first released, along one edge of the tape was the audio track, the other edge was the control track, and in-between was the video tracks in helical scan (the tracks which represent odd and even fields are pressed against each other with no space between them). Later, Hi-Fi audio was added to the VHS specification, but as I've just described every area of the tape is already used by video, the mono audio track, and the helical-scan video tracks. So in order to add the stereo audio, the hi-fi tracks were added physically underneath the helical-scan video tracks; thus they are non-continuous helical-scan tracks also. Unfortunately there is no way to select the audio, and any Hi-Fi VCR will read the Hi-Fi track (if present) instead of the mono track, however you can play the same tape in a mono VCR that does not have Hi-Fi heads and it should play the mono track and not the Hi-Fi track.

With all that said, there's no guarantee that the OP's VHS tape has Hi-Fi audio if it's a really old release, in which case it will only have one audio track. If her tape does have HJi-Fi then it is possible to capture both tracks separately using two different VCR's.

Holy carp, I did not know that. Thanks!

"Voiceover" as opposed to dubbed is a bona fide horror of home video phenomena that I've been perfectly content not knowing about until just now, thank you very much!  Are foreigners so incredibly averse to reading that they'd rather suffer that kind of cacophonous aural abuse?

And by "reading," I guess I mean either subtitles or just reading a book instead of watching a movie because this whole voiceover thing sounds entirely prohibitive!

There are fairly good reasons for it being there. Yes, it's much more convenient for the average Joe and it lowers the bar of entry (so, for one thing, kids who aren't great readers can actually enjoy watching a movie instead of struggling to keep up with it. And you want kids on board, because of that parent dough). It also means you don't have to squint at a tiny TV set from all across the room which wasn't an uncommon situation back in the day, believe me. Plus, it's MUCH cheaper and faster to produce than a full dub.

Not to mention there is an art to voiceover. For one thing, it can't just be any shmuck doing it: it needs to be a certain timbre that'll allow you to screen the voiceover out. Yes, it's possible, largely due to the fact that if you're listening to a voiceover in your native tongue laid on top of an audio track in a language you don't understand well or even at all it's only natural you focus on the former, and not the latter. It helps that people are conditioned after decades of being exposed to it.

Personally, I'm not a proponent of voiceover, but there are certain types of movies that it really works for. If anything, there's a lot of nostalgia to watching a low budget action flick read by Knapik. At the same time, I wouldn't want, say, Bergman brutalised like that.

And since I'm on a bit of a tanget, here's an interesting read about voiceover that I found:

It's most likely a voiceover. Probably Knapik. I don't think Star Wars got a full dub back in the VHS days.

paszczak said:

I don't know how to split 2 audios, I don't know if this is even possible. It's not 2 separate audios so user chooses one, it's 2 audios together.

You can't split anything, because VHS doesn't work that way. It's a single analog track.

I'd say it's worth preserving even if the video quality is terrible :)

Anakin appearing young as a force ghost is "explained."  I guess this guy doesn't realize that Anakin didn't die as a "wicked old man" considering he just saved his son from death.

Dave Filoni had to be tactful in expressing opinion about the altered force ghost in ROTJ. It's no secret it's loathed by most. Filoni is the cartoon version of Rick McCallum.

That shot in RotJ is indeed quite dense so it all makes sense.

Bringing in someone who's actually directed a Trek movie or two would be a smart move. (Paging Mr. Frakes!) They probably won't of course. ;)

There's, uh, rumours (if it even qualifies as that) about Edgar Wright being one of the new candidates. Probably something someone came up with because of Pegg (or that shot he directed), but I'd be very, very happy with that choice.

Well, maybe not that happy, because a blockbuster would tie him up for a couple of years he could spend making something else. It would be a smart choice, though.
