team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

When you do VFX you have to make sure your black levels match.  It was tough with old optical printers.  When you do a composite these days we do a "gamma slam" and raise the gamma really high to see how a shot looks.  If the black levels are out of wack you will see it.  When they are low it's hard to see that they are in fact different.  And when the colorist crushes the blacks you might lose them all together.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

What about using photos from the set as reference?

The book The Making of the Empire Strikes Back there are a lot of set photos that are probably fairly accurate.  If you know the color of certain objects in the film, clothes, skin, Yoda, the ship you could try and make those colors match.  If you take more neutral objects that have greys, whites and blacks in them it will help you balance the shots.

To me Empire is probably the hardest film to fix.  Star Wars luckily has a few Technicolor prints.  With Jedi the film stock finally changed so those prints probably have less faded color.  But what about Empire?  It's kind of stuck in between the eras where print stocks were at their poorest.

Now that George is out of the picture... (now re: Disney!)
Time

I concur.  I just thought about posting the same thing today and saw that there is a thread here.

What about aiming it at Kathleen Kennedy?  I'm sure someone like her would realize it's importance and value financially and historically.  Maybe approach Seth Green about it too.  He has George's ear and I'm sure he would a great proponent of the initiative.

Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years
Time

The prequel films were so bad how can it get worse?  I think Lucasfilm will retain a lot of autonomy over creating new content like Pixar does.  I also think a lot of talented people will want to work on the new films and without too much Lucas intervention they can be good films.  Will they re-capture our youth?  No, but some good solid storytelling could come out of this universe.  Pixar has been an amazing force for good character driven films and television has been leaping and bounding over the quality of feature films.  Star Wars could fit quite well into the hands of a talented new team of creators.  Kennedy just needs to keep the Disney notes at bay.

Who should Direct the Star Wars VII, VIII, and IX ?
Time

They should try and poach someone from Pixar.  Pixar has been creating some of the best character driven films that have come out from a big company in the last 10 years.  I think it would be good to find a director who is younger and a fan of the original films.  People like Spielberg and Zemeckis are too old and out of touch.  They don't make films how the new Star Wars films need to be.  Some tv directors/writers should be considered too.  A lot of amazing television has been created in the last 5-10 years too.

I like the UP writer and directors:

Pete Docte, Bob Peterson

Then There is Brad Bird and of course Joss Whedon should be considered for any big directorial gig.
