STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

AvatarX: that mesh looks really nice. Obviously could do with some grubbying up and so on, but it'd be wicked ace to have some all-new FX shots for ANH.

Incidentally, adywan, here's a thought that you've probably already thought: will we be able to see Yavin in the background during the Death Star battle, and not just on the approach? That'd be neat, even if it's just in one appropriate shot.

Having watched a second time, I think both the busyness and the TIEs on the readouts both look great and are appropriate. What I always hoped to see more of is the stuff that I always loved from RotJ, and that's the external shots of the ships swooping around firing at each other, and that's something that does come across as a bit lacking now, purely I think because modern audiences expect that sort of thing.

Incidentally, on the shot where Han says "we're coming up on their sentry ships", it might be nice to see a star destroyer off in the background - those TIEs otherwise seem to come from nowhere.

---

If I were doing this scene again (and I'm not), I'd be tempted to draw out the battle a little longer and make it look as if the Falcon is taking heavier damage - maybe it's just me but there's no real sense of "threat" in this scene now (nor was there before). It would be nice to see some new ext. shots of the Falcon getting shot at and those shots doing some real damage (little explosions coming off the points where they hit, others getting absorbed the shield, adding some camera-rocking effects into some of the internal shots). Like I say, I'm not doing this scene, and I think the improvements that you've made, adywan, are immeasurable.

Superb work, ady. Nice job with the lightsabers and the TIE battle.

A minor criticism (and if you're not done mixing the sound then you've probably noticed already): when Ben says "run, Luke", Luke appears to be reacting before Ben has finished speaking. I'd be tempted to bring Ben's line forward a tiny bit to give Luke more chance to visibly react - IIRC Luke sort of ponders this a bit more in the original version (but then, I've not seen it for a long time so could easily be mistaken).

Another bloody edit of TPM (* unfinished project *)
Time
It seems that there's a 1999 and a 2004 DVD kicking around in the UK - the latter seems to be the two-disc edition so that's what I'm getting.

I bloody hate the podracing, and intend to cut it to ribbons, but we'll see. It might have to stay just to keep the film long enough, which is a shame, but for pacing reasons having a hugely built-up victory 2/3rds of the way through the film is madness. There's more podracing than Gungan battle or Jedi duel. Grrrr.

shanep - thanks, I've given this some thought. I'm not sure that there's the footage to do what you want, and this edit is already going to have quite a few allusions to off-screen events. The celebration scene is so small in terms of runtime that I think it's safe to drop it.

OKAY, GUYS, I NEED YOUR HELP NOW!

Right, I don't actually own Ep1 on DVD. I feel terrible at the thought of giving Lucas money for the cack-carnival that is the pure, unadulterated Ep1. You need to give me as many good reasons as you can for me to spend the £7 (~US$13) to get the disc. Then I need some pointers as to what tech I need to rip the disc and start editing. My first project will be to produce a really rough drag-and-drop and overdub/subtitle of ep1 indicating all of my changes, which I'll post up for review comments before starting seriously on this.

I was planning on dubbing Maul for my Ep1. If I ever get around to it. But if anyone else does, I'll quite happily do the Maul lines anyway. (In fact, as I may have mentioned elsewhere, I think it's probably possible to get hold of Pete Serafinowicz for a modest fee to do the lines himself)

IMHO it's pretty important that Maul = Grievous, and as much emotion and so on is put into Obi-Wan vs. Grievous as possible, because otherwise that battle just feels totally empty. Plus, Maul has form for effectively using more than one lightsabre at once. As with the headache in my ep1 as to the reveal of Padme/Amidala's dual identity, there's no reason, really, why Maul can't be called Maul in Ep1 and Grievous in Ep3. I would strongly favour renaming him in Ep3 to Maul, but that sounds eminently unlikely. Would it, however, be possible, to do Grievous's body armour over in a Maul colour scheme? I think that would totally rock. We love Maul, he's ace, and one of the few good things about Ep1. Let's keep as much of him in the PT as possible.

(Incidentally, my Ep1 as suggested by someone else, will feature Maul instead of Palpatine giving the orders to the Nemoidians, so he'll have a much bigger gravelly-voiced speaking part.) (If I ever get around to it)

No, I think that it is only not confusing because we have lived with Ep1 for several years now. A good movie should give just the right amount of explanation to the audience.

With the earlier reveal now edited out, we've only seen Natalie Portman giving orders before the raid - it's clear at this point that this is the queen, but not clear that she is wearing one of Padme's outfits. She does not change costume after this point. The decoy doesn't appear (iirc) until the scene in the throne room, and a throwaway "my decoy!" as the doors open is enough IMO to confuse Gunray and enlighten the audience.

The alternative would be to splice some Neeson dialogue into an earlier scene (because Qui-Gonn has quite clearly sussed that Padme===Amidala already) so that he addresses Padme as "Queen". I can't think of a suitable place for this to occur, though.

Someone mentioned earlier that the whole bongo scene can be removed, and I like this idea. However, filmically, I think the audience needs to see the Gungan city so that they have some empathy with the Gungans (and have met them in a quasi-intelligent capacity) before the battle. It also allows Jar Jar to come out of the swamp later and comment something like "a massacre... they're all dead!", just before the raid briefing scene.

The problem with the SE "journey into Mos Eisley" scenes, particularly that one approach shot, is that there isn't enough sand and dust being blown around like we see everywhere else in the original film. Is there any way to correct this at the editing stage?

Also, I know that they just smeared vaseline on the camera lens whilst filming the speeder moving in '77 (with some corrections for the SE), but I really liked this effect, like there's some kind of shimmery mcguffin power keeping the speeder floating. Surely this could be duplicated for the approach shot?

As others have said: I'm very excited by this edit, and I can't wait to see the whole thing.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
As someone else said earlier (and please bear in mind I haven't watched any of the clips, though I'm itching to):

It's very very easy to lose perspective on a work like this (I know, having been involved in similarly long-term projects), particularly when you've been doing it for a very long time, to the extent that it's going to be impossible to get everything just perfect first time round. IMO the very best thing you can do is get this project out the door as quickly as possible so that everyone can see it and cast a critical eye over it, then LEAVE IT ALONE for at least a couple of months. Play golf, snort crack, do anything but Star Wars, totally take your mind off the complete project, then come back and tweak the bits that need to be tweaked with a fresh, clear pair of eyes.
